There's a reason this scream has become mythical. Listening to the isolated vocals and examining the waveform reveals the truth about how this scream was achieved in the studio. Oh yeah, and we get to go through the rest of the song too!

To keep the mystery alive for my own fandom, I will concede that there is layering but it's simply mixing together full 25 second takes to get a more pristine full take.

Worked for the band during that era. Was present for many of the recording sessions at Cello Studios (Ocean Way) and The Hook. Will go on record that the length of the scream on that take was pure and Maynard nearly did pass out at the end of it. You can confirm with Danny Carey, Justin Chancellor and David Bottrill who were all witnesses to the performance in question. I do appreciate your effort and analysis, however.

There is no claim that Maynard didn’t nearly pass out, or that he didn’t have one or more incredible takes. But none of those claims address the claim that there is some production wizardry going on to subtlety layer and compose it into the audio we have all heard thousands of times in the released recording.

The other members of Tool create the instrumentals and then Maynard listens to it and creates lyrics and vocals separately from the band. It's interesting that it's cohesive in the end. I've seen Tool and A Perfect Circle live. They were both awesome live! Take care Chris 💕

You can hear a lot of these production tricks on Maynard's vocals when it comes to the long-held notes. For instance, the end of "jimmy," there's a long delay effect that crossfades in at some point towards the end of the note. He uses long delays and reverbs on his vocals live, too, especially on "Pushit" from the Salival live album.

Hey Chris! Thanks for uploading so much valuable information on singing, it's very helpful for so many people! Lately I've been having a problem with my mixed voice. I seem to have an unintentional rasp everytime I sing in mix (especially when I use a more open throat and around the lower mixed notes like around B flat). It sounds like a layer of fry voice on top of my singing. It doesn't sound that bad but sometimes it takes over so much that my singing almost seems an octave lower like the mongolian throat singing. I manage to get rid of it when I go as thin and winey as possible, but I would like to be able to bring a little bit of chest and keep an open throat on those notes while also being able to keep them clean (or at least cleaner). Maybe you could make a video on this in the future. Good luck in everything you do!

He prob did also have a single take as well as the layer. I can do 35-40 second screams and can tell you I don't have much lung capacity, I smoke bongs every day. It's easy when its just yelling and not annunciating words. Especially since there's no lead up of words before or after so you have all the time in the world to get your breath
@chrisliepe
@chrisliepe День назад
Most people totally can do a longer scream, but it’s not the technique we hear Maynard doing in the studio recording. It’s more like what we hear him do live… a voiceless, low airflow fry or upper constricted “whisper” scream.
@GoddaryuTUBE
@GoddaryuTUBE День назад
@@chrisliepe And that's exactly how I do the long screams its super compressed low airflow fry scream, and as you start running out of support for it, you close your mouth more and bring teeth into it (for lack of a better way to describe) and lean into a more grunge kinda distortion.
@rome8180
@rome8180 День назад
Heck, 25 seconds isn't that hard if you're singing a note in a good range either. It just takes a tiny bit of practice. I would say a scream is harder because you're more likely to accidentally release too much air at the onset. For me, an E4 in a mixed voice is the sweet spot. But really, any note that's not excessively chest voice driven would work. Lung capacity has nothing to do with it. It has to do with not releasing too much air too fast. Air flow control.
@GoddaryuTUBE
@GoddaryuTUBE День назад

Something that strikes me is the chorus effect on the vocal, which I think is used pretty frequently across Maynard fronted projects. Sounds very cool and adds some depth and character to the recorded performance. Also, no pitch correction that I can hear, and every vocal layer is not perfectly on pitch, which I think is additive to the overall performance.

You are correct about the scream. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IsGI0FsMLYU.html fast forward to 6:45, he does the scream here for almost 21 seconds live back in 2002. When MJK was at his prime vocally in the early 2000s he could do the Grudge scream for 20 seconds live (Which is absolutely insane). In the recording its closer to 25 seconds so there's some production elements going on lengthening it by about 5 seconds so it matches up for when the instruments transition.
@SwatyChopsuey
@SwatyChopsuey 9 часов назад
To be honest that kind of scream is not TOO difficult in my opinion (I'm a singer and I've done smilar scream that long or longer for some songs) it's actually about relaxing the diaphragm and just holding a note while retaining some grit in your vocals. As long as you have great breathing you should be fine. Also from what I am hearing I don't know if they actually fade the beggining part of the scream into it or if they just double layered the ending part with different timing so they overlap and gives us a bigger ambiance.

No other “religion” was started by a science fiction writer who is convicted felon for fraud that wrote specific policies requiring its members commit illegal acts (including that the police are the enemy of the church). Scientology has written policy stating all of this. Other religions certainly hide things and have people who do bad things all the time, that is blatantly clear and I’m not defending that, but Scientology stands alone in how its policies were written, are used, and how they enforced by the “church”. Chris is literally pointing out how/why/when this is taking place to give us an understanding of what goes into complex vocal recordings that deliver the “full sounds” we hear on top tier records. The fact that you commented like this tells us all how little you know about the music industry. Maynard can clearly scream it for 25 second live but to fulfill a lengthy tour you HAVE TO modify the technique to maintain a full length show and vocal health for the entire tour. Maynard is one of the best of all times and Chris made that clear. Ps- you obviously dig Maynard too which is why you got so defensive.
