The magic of Tool is that Maynard lays the vocals to the songs after the instrumental portion of the song is already played and that is how the songs are created. The way she say's "I'm going to listen to it again" then gleefully presses the back button like she's just helping herself to another chocolate from the box. Like she is saying "I shouldn't indulge, but i cant help myself." Love it :) Anything Maynard touches from his other bands A Perfect Circle or Puscifer is just absolutely brilliant. You'll need to listen to Culling Voices on their latest album for those vocals. Personally, my favourite vocals from Maynard are on the 'Pushit - Live' track from their Salival album. @yewknight I've tried writing and recording music and a lot of the time the vocalist and the vocal tracks take precedent in how the song is received or appreciated. A great vocalist will carry mediocre instrumentalists and great instrumentalists will carry mediocre vocalists, but Tool has both a great vocalist and great instrumentalists which allows Maynard to step back and let the music breathe. I'm a huge Avenged Sevenfold fan and I love the album 'City of Evil' but I still think that M. Shadows sings too much on that album because he might have been trying to show off his new and improved and vocal coach instructed singing voice.

The name of this album always gets me in the feels. His mother, Judith, had just passed away after 10,000 days of battling with cancer. He had a lot of emotional turmoil in his heart for this album. He was gonna be a country music singer until Danny (Drummer) convinced him to front for a rock band instead. That is why he is able to have such clean and gentle vocals when he wants to; he practiced country first. But he also brings such a haunting power to rock. It is undeniable. Everything on Ænima, forward, has been breathtaking to me.

I don’t know about the country singer thing. Only because if Maynard said that then it was probably bullshit. That’s right up his sense of humor alley. Fucking with the press.
@alexschutz7283

They were Toolshed first btw. And Opiate was an absolute masterpiece were it coming from anywhere else. My favorite thing about TOOL is the moments when he lets his sense of humor come forward. Reverend Maynard screaming about the cries of the carrots, for example.

I think that the word that she's looking for pertaining to the contrast between his tone and his lyrics is juxtaposition. And he is an absolute master. Very few can do that. So glad I had the opportunity to see Tool again this past November. Still mind blowing after all these years.

It is so fun to watch a vocal teacher fall in love with Menard like we all have! they are complex pieces. This whole album is polyrhythmic you need to listen to the whole 10,000 days. Everybody in the band is doing something different.🙏🏽 I grew up, singing in rock bands, and I’m somewhat of a singer myself. I need to take professional vocal lessons to take it to the next level but it’s guys like this taught me how to say through practice.

Accurate! It's my understanding the band builds the music and then Maynard creates the lyrics on top of a finished product, hence the layered finish you hear. It's brilliant! Watching a reaction video to their music almost makes me want to cry because every song is so emotional. As I get older, it gets less emotional and these videos tend to reinvigorate that feeling. I am more of a stoic and serious type personality and Maynards voice speaks for me in ways that I cannot. Its Angelic. He and the band encapsulate all of my emotions hidden away inside. They have a way of finding them.

I think they are maybe slightly more than average complex in their genre, but what they do better than literally any band is weave complexity and simplicity and uncertainty and closure in such a perfect way. I think it takes a lot of skill to be technically complex, like dream theatre and rush and them, but to be able to do that and have it sound so effortlessly beautiful and still artistic is what only gods can do. And they are as close to gods as human can get

It was interesting watching you recognize the voice in the mix not stand out front. Most Tool songs feature this method. Anyone who’s watched a Tool concert in last 20 or so years can tell you Maynard stands in the back next to the drums in the shadows and delivers epic performances. Along with the rest of the guys. Pretty equal footing usually.

it's so fun to watch someone listen to tool for the first time. The eyes of confusion, the smiles of surprise and of "is this really happening?" are so great to see lol You can take your time as well. We know tool songs are complex and have a lot to unpack. Don't worry about being "only halfway through the song", we don't mind. It this was 45 minutes I'd watch it just the same. I'd suggest on the next tool song you listen, listen it for the first time from beginning to end, just to have a feel for it. Then you go back at it stopping whenever you feel necessary. You'll have a better notion of the nuances of the song and of how it began and how it ended, what impressed you, and you'll also notice a lot of things you didn't the first time. I'm not saying it's bad going like you did, just making a suggestion :)

Great reaction. One of the things I love about not only you, but many of the vocal coaches that do reactions like this is that your love for music in general is palpable. If it's any consolation, the first time `I` heard this, I barely realized there even WAS vocals! I was so transfixed by not only the bass line, but the drums. The vocal melody came through, but not much else. It wasn't until I heard it a couple of times that I really started paying attention to his vocals and the lyrical content for that matter. He has such an incredibly unique style of singing, so it was fun to see you break it down.
