Debussy's Sonata for Violin & Piano - Szigeti/Bartók (1940)

What a superbly elegant pianist Bartok was.

This is my favourite recording of one of my very favourite pieces of music. The ensemble playing is quite perfect -- which is something of a miracle in a live performance. Szigeti catches every nuance of the music, and makes every detail speak to you, and never with exaggeration.

Szigeti recorded this three times, each brilliantly. As much as I admire Bartok's playing, this one suffers a bit by dimmer sound. The one from about the same period, with Andor Foldes, is very special.

It is worth hearing the Neveu -- sister and brother -- version of this from the same period. The fact that four great musicians found so much in Debussy's prescient sonata of 1916/7 shows what a great work it is. The composer never heard it professionally. To me the music seems to be "about" the inter-war period and remainder of the 20th century.
