In this episode of Debut Diaries, I'm chatting about my experience doing copy edits and some of the additional things that come along at this stage like dedication, acknowledgements, and more.
You can expect to see at least a monthly Debut Diaries video where I plan to dive into all the aspects of what it’s like to be a debut author. If you didn’t know, I have a young adult urban fantasy with sci-fi elements BLOOD LIKE MAGIC coming out from Margaret K. McElderry/S&S in Summer 2021.
This series overall is a chance for me to share these experiences with you as I’m going through them. So if you’ve ever wanted an inside look at being a traditionally published debut author. Hahaha yes i love that! I honestly do the same thing with editor sibling since they’re a season ahead of me. I look at what they’re doing and then ask for and do the same things 😂

I love your videos! Your energy sucks me in no matter the topic. I just got my first editorial letter! 😬 I will definitely work a little harder to tighten that query letter. Never considered it could go that far. So helpful and yet oddly like a syllabus for a class that I didn’t prepare well enough for! Thanks for this video and I can’t wait to see the video on the cover!!! I do always want to leave a reminder for those who use RU-vid to view instead of create, don’t forget to let the ads run instead of skipping. It’s a good time to grab a drink, a snack, answer that text, or something else for just a minute! The YT creator like Liselle will appreciate it!

this is the best episode yet! I feel you when you said a lot of people worked on the book, it takes a village. I think I would get choked up writing an acknowledgement section too because it's a feeling of 'you made it and without these individuals, this wouldn't have been possible'.

It really does! And I hadn’t conceptually understood that until I saw the list. And yes acknowledgements are definitely emotional for that reason

I love that you're acknowledging your team and sensitivity readers by name instead of rolling them all into one sentence. That's something I don't think I would have thought of but it just shows what kind of person you are 💖💖💖

Awww 😭 I just would rather do that?? I think it’s nice to have the acknowledgement. And for some sensitivity readers, I think people find out who to contact by reading them in that section, so if I can get them some business, I’m happy to do that.

I guess it just seemed natural to me? lol but I definitely think it was a good idea contacting them and asking how they wanted to be noted, because not all wanted to be called sensitivity readers.

Wow I’m so glad you brought up that copyeditor issue of their biases. Weirdly I was very worried about that even tho I’m just drafting my novel now lol because I know my grammar sucks and I do that weird thing where I have to google if a certain phrase means what I think it means??? Lol ughh that process will be so incredibly difficult for me. And I’m so excited for you! It’s getting close now! 😃

Yeah, that was a problem that I hadn’t quite realized was still a thing until chatting with people and I think it’s important for people to know to tell someone like their editor or agent who can advocate for them and help them avoid working with people like that. But also my grammar is not great haha but that’s the copy editor’s job and they do great at it. As long as you have the basics down, I think you’re good.

I didn't even think about having those types of experiences with copy editors. Ugh. Glad you didn't have that experience. Also, that's a great tip to think about how to address the sensitivity readers.Loving all this insider info!

This is so interesting, I love learning about all these details. During your own read-through you mention that you caught lots of things. Were those things that were missed during the editing process or just things that you wanted to change yourself, as in improvements. Did you need to ask your editor if you could make those changes? Thanks for sharing so much with us:)

Glad you liked it! And it was a bit of a mix, some of it was things that I wanted to add that I thought of inbetween edits. And others were just tiny things that were missed, mostly inconsistencies that happened when we changed major things between edits. And nope, didn’t ask my editor permission, I just put them in there, and if she wanted to clarify any changes, she just emailed me about it.

Do you know/can you share what season in 2021 Blood Like Magic is coming out? I know it may be too far off for a specific date but I'd love to know what season so I can build up the appropriate amount of hype.

It’s in summer! So sometime between June and August. Of course all pubs dates are subject to change but it’s been slated as a summer release from the start 😊😊😊
