You still have so much more to offer.
You sense it.
You know it.
Your intuition has never been so right.
Matthew Kelly, author of Culture Solution, The Dream Manager, and The Rhythm of Life, offers a powerful exploration of the connection between everything.
“The great minds of any age, in any field or discipline, don’t necessarily know more. They know how to connect new information with everything else they already know. This ability to connect one idea with every other idea is the essence of genius. Nothing is random.”
In Nothing is Random, Matthew Kelly examines a number of seemingly random topics while showing us how to connect the dots between one idea and everything else. Here are a handful of questions and topics cover in this extraordinary book:
• How do you learn? How do you think? How do you absorb new knowledge and experiences?
• Can you spot the difference between a fad and an enduring idea quickly?
• Why does strategic planning confuse people instead of delivering clarity.
• The connection between leading people every day and branding.
• Are iPhones destroying the world?
• Why your boss doesn’t like your ideas.
• How to make twice as much by working half as much
• What is indisputable value?
• The Ultimate HR Question: Do You Actually Like People?
• What percentage of your time do you spend in your unique ability?
• The truth about work-life balance
• What really differentiates highly-engaged people
• The meaning and value of work for individuals and society.
• Decade thinking: Learning to think like Walk Disney, Warren Buffet, Steve Jobs, and Jeff Bezos.
• Authenticity over authority
Learning to recognize patterns and connect the dots is perhaps the most significant cognitive ability anyone can aspire to. The more we can recognize the patterns in our lives, our business and industry, our relationships, our culture, the more meaningfully we can participate in anything and everything.
You still have so much more to offer. You sense it. You know it. Your intuition has never been so right.
Who am I speaking about here? Is it someone a couple of years into their career, someone who has reached the role they always wanted, or someone who is nearing retirement? All of the above.
The only people it doesn’t apply to is those who have lost their enthusiasm for life. Enthusiasm keeps us young. It is the secret to eternal youth, and those who possess it are always reaching for more in the healthiest way possible. Not more cars, houses, and money. But the fact that so many reach for more of meaningless things is testament to the reality that human beings were created to reach for more. Many may reach for more of the wring things, but that doesn’t make the reaching for more a human malfunction.
Toward the end of his life Michelangelo is reported to have said, “I regret that I have done so little for my eternal soul and that I am but beginning to learn the alphabet of my craft.”
He was eighty-eight years old and inarguably one of the great geniuses of all time. But beginning to learn his craft? His honesty and humility put the arrogant self-satisfaction of so many in perspective.
It is true, you still have so much more to offer. You sense it. You know it. Your intuition has never been so right. But to offer more, to contribute more, to add value that far exceeds your accomplishments to date, you still have more to learn. Or not. Maybe what we need to learn is how to connect the dots between everything we already know.
Nothing is random. Learning how to think in a way that connects the dots will prove that to you and open up new and amazing possibilities for every aspect of your life, from business to relationships, to health and investing, to parenting and career.
This is a truly remarkable book. At first it may seem like you are reading twenty-short books, but as you progress you will see these are not random topics and much more than just learning about new topics and ideas, you are learning how to learn by discovering how to recognize the patterns that connect everything.

Inspiring! Connecting the dots between everything that is happening in our lives... everything that has happened in the past and connecting new knowledge to that past knowledge. We can't prepare for the surprises but we can learn from them. Thank you for your insights, Matthew!

Curious, instead of SWOT, have you used SOAR used in Appreciative Inquiry. Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, and Results. It would fit well into Decade thinking.

Matthew, I cringe and apologize...as I was once critical of one small quote in one of your early books. I now look at the whole film...and not a snap shot (as you talked about in this video)- I’m also trying to help people to do the same. Thanks for your ongoing relatable wisdom. Peace.

I love it , reminds me of what my English teacher had us do in school, we had a journal and had to tell the class where we saw ourselves 5 years from now . As an adult and hearing it from you I did that I started to think of my dream home 5 years from now and my needs . I did it while you spoke of it .

Thank you, Matthew. My reaction to the power of "Decade Thinking" lies in those disciplines you seem to reinforce in all your writings. One discipline that amplifies my journey is having the courage to tell others about my aspirations. I'm so amazed at the random contributions uncovered as a result of simply telling others about a far-off dream. My experience is that the people in my life have been drawn to pictures of a future state by curiosity and willingness to help. Taking action on the aspirations acts like a magnet for those random contributions for unexpected others. Thanks again! Cheers! JD

Excellent video, Matthew. I have enjoyed the books I have read of your work. I look forward to reading this book. As a Life, Executive Leadership, and Business Coach, I love the use of powerful questions getting us to reflect and uncover the possibilities. Our motives are definitely drivers of action.

Life is not random or is it? Surely there is a balance in life between planning, forecasting and letting new ideas be explored. Who is going to turn down the job offer that they never knew was coming? A lottery win or death in the family are all occasions that change our 5 and decade plans. A balance needs to be adopted.

Matthew, I am SO GRATEFUL you are writing Nothing is Random! I so sick of hearing about manifesting and attracting what we want (as if Jesus had no role). But, I do need to fuel my mind in the area of goal setting, mindset/business and growth. What are a few of your favourite books and/or authors in this area? Feel free to add yourself to that list (please name which of your books specifically too). THANK YOU!!! God bless!
