DECADES OLD Food Forest In Phoenix | Tour A Master Gardener's Yard

The late, great Master Gardener Dr Falkenstein created a front and back yard food forest paradise in his Phoenix area home. Some of the trees on this property are up to 25 years old and are perfect examples of growing what "can't grow here." From mangos and avocados to cacao and vanilla, all sorts of tropical and subtropical fruiting plants can be found here.
Special thanks to Brandon and Alyssa from Greenie's Garden ( / greeniesgarden ) for assistance in making this video, and to the Falkenstein family for allowing us the opportunity to visit and document this property.

I regard this video as one of the seminal video's of desert horticulture vis a vis Food Forest horticulture. This should be viewed by every person on the planet twice a year.

I have never in my 77 years found a more flavorful grape juice than Concord. I used to buy one gallon jugs, fresh squeezed, at the vineyard near Roseville, CA in the '50s. It was so pungent that I had to sip it slowly.

Thank you for making and posting your most recent videos that re-emphasize the prime importance of mulching heavily. I am putting your advice to task. Have not found a good source of 'wood chips' in Casa Grande. I have had a local landscape business, drop off their 'clean up' loads. That was a bad idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have recently started using alfalfa hay, mulching several plants and trees. They really like it!!!! Am searching for the most inexpensive way of purchasing this stuff. I actually live, right in the heart of where this stuff is grown. Just need to network, and find the right connection.

Shamus, consider Maui for your next vacation. Take the drive to Hana and stop at one of the little farms on Ulaino Road and ask where the wild guava forest are. Thousands of wild acres are above the road just mountainside (Mauka) of that intersections. They go up the mountain about a mile or so. Trees are 30-40 feet tall. Beautiful fruit.

" I can not believe it grows so much mangos" and in the view there are palm trees around :DDD Do these people know that they are blessed with their warm climate. I do understand they get couple of chilly days but overall. In a little north Europe. We grow some apples, plumps and practically it ends what you can grow :D I am just jealous.

its not warm enough in winter for a lot of species, a hard freeze can still kill the trees if not protected

What a beautiful living legacy 😌 I have a running list of all the trees I want to try. We don't have any benefits of the monsoon season over here, but we don't often hit over 115 (May-Sept are usually 100-107). So it will be interesting to see what thrives!

Shamus, I'm in the west valley on chlorinated city water, which burns my avocado leaves. In the short term I collect the vapor distilled water from my A/C, but I'm only generating about 6-10 gallons a day from that. What can I do with the chlorinated water to make it suitable?
