There isn't a single musician of any worth who doesn't recognise Brian's extraordinary talent. It doesn't matter who you ask, whether it be mainstream pop, R&B stars or creators of heavy rock; they all place Brian on another level to themselves. Art Garfunkel called him the 'Mozart of Pop' and it's impossible to argue with that term of affection. When you get McCartney, Clapton, Elton John and Ronnie Wood et al all acknowledging Brian's immeasurable skillset in creativity then you have to buckle under the accolades bestowed upon him. It's that simple.
@@rogergough5928 it's looks amazing going forward to seeing before beach boys years before I was in 60th birthday party anniversary celebration for oasr awesome picture awards TCM channel interview with the best way magic of the same time years before I was
He always did. The Bee Gees, David Lee Roth (Van Halen) and even Paul McCartney were some of his biggest fans. Paul often said that Pet Sounds inspired Sargent Pepper. Also Diana Ross & Brian Wilson have so much in common, they both did The T.A.M.I. Show, American Bandstand and Ed Sullivan. Traci was getting into it but her Brother Ross was kind of perplexed. This year also marks a bittersweet time in both of their lives. Brian has a nervous breakdown in 1964, and that same week in a pretaped performance The Supremes make their national tv debut on Ed Sullivan. Now a whole new generation of fans are discovering Ed Sullivan's legacy. He, Dick Clark and Alan Freed did alot for black artists over the years.
@Garrett Johnson - I'd agree with you, although your statement in itself is also thrown around a lot lmao. Care to tell us which ones called geniuses aren't geniuses? I'm just you'll have to Google now to back up your statement from 2 years ago.
Garrett, One of the greatest composers to live in the 20th Century! And under horrific abusive conditions perpetrated by Brian's dad. ❤🙏🎵🎤🎹💕 Brian IS a musical Genius!!
@@James-ko3gw - Ehhh, not so sure. I'd say competent. I'd also say Billy Joel, Elton John, Paul McCartney are also competent. Genius gets thrown around way too much when some is good at what they do. If you want to say damn good that's fine. Hey I'm a realist.
Brian Wilson deserved this wonderful tribute for all the amazing music and lyrics he has contributed. The amazing boys choir gave me chills listening to them. Bravo!
Such a beautiful tribute to a musical phenomenon!! I am blessed to have seen him perform with the original group many times! There will NEVER BE ANOTHER LIKE HIM!! GOD BROKE THE MOLD!!

Dear lord, the boys choir moved me to tears. I did not know they were coming up and I thought their arrangement with "Love and Mercy" was just beautiful.
I am so choked up it’s difficult to be objective. Brian Wilson is the genius, the very best our generation. He is the weaver of sounds and words, the tapestry maker, the window to the beauty and pain that so many of the children a troubled time lived. Bless you, Brian Wilson.
His wife remains an obnoxious money hungry, castrating c#$t. I’m so very sorry for the way his “ twilight years” turned out. I wish he had his brothers with him, for this tribute.

That last one broke me up. I could see Brian was moved too. Thank you Brian, for all your creative magic through all the years of my life. I am rich for knowing you.
I love the obvious adoration Diana Ross has for him.....as do all in that theater! This is very touching, and well deserved! I am a native coastal southern Californian and I grew up on Beach Boys music; being drawn into the sound and words created by Brian, the Boys and some help from "The Wrecking Crew", as did so many groups.......the sound that both exemplified and influenced aspects of lifestyles. Brian's genius and musical beauty is a distinct part of the soundtrack to my life!
Me too. I had my teen age crush to to this song ( what would i ever do without youuuu.. . .) 1978. An irony is that I soon had Diana Ross RollS Royce, in Beverly hills, 1982. Scary times Pearl white beautiful car. i remember so well
I had the same thought. Richly deserved honor, and appropriate appreciation from all, but the obvious adoration and enthusiasm from Diana Ross really stands out. That says a lot.
I too grew up in California & was a huge fan. When Beatles arrived, I wasn't interested as I was too loyal a Beach Boy fan. When I saw them in concert approx 1966 or '67 Brian was no longer touring. I had such a huge crush on him & his voice.
Man, I just choked up seeing Brian finally smile when the kids expressed their admiration for his music. Back in the '60s he wanted to create a "teenage symphony to God", I know it was amazing for him to see it affirmed in their performance.

Maybe he is thankful he is still alive despite the atrocities brought on by his monster abusive dad. Brian is the only one to separate from the dysfunction in his family and seek professional mental health. He survived!! That's what is going through his mind. ❤💕🙏🎵🎹🎤 Brian is thanking God for everything, blessings, a wonderful wife, thanking God for saving life, thanking people for appreciating his talent, he survived!
szqsk8 I’m forever going to remember a co worker I used to work with recently who lost her hearing gradually, which means that the last time she heard music or any sound was around 2002. We had a boombox In our department to hear music and she always ask me to play “surfer girl” for her. She would go and place her hand right on top of the boombox to feel the rhythm of the song. It was heartbreaking to me and at the same time I learned to appreciate my senses more than ever thanks to her.
Seeing everyone get up and enjoy California Girls made me cry for Brian. After all he went through, just knowing he got to see all those people appreciate his music decades later got me emotional in a way I can't explain.
I've never seen any Kennedy Center honoree ignite such a 'dance party' with his music!!! this music is timeless, I grew up with it and it will forever be iconic, thanks for posting..
The closing number, love and mercy, as done by the choir... was simply lovely. Between the music and the performance, a real moment of magic. So amazing...
On 1963, my 12 year old self discovered The Beach Boys. I fell in love with them then - especially Brian - and while the rest of my teen friends were crazy for the Beatles and others, for the rest of that decade I stayed true to Brian and stayed on my soapbox continuously preaching the genius of the much underrated Brian Wilson. 60 years later, I'm still on that soapbox.
After seeing the biopic "Love and Mercy" and hearing the performance of the song here, I think it is my new favorite song. . . I think Brian was genuinely touched by the performances of his music.
This brought me to tears. I just love Brian so much, and I hope he's happy, I hope he's ok. For all of the joy and amazing feelings he's brought me, I just want him to be happy.
Brian looks very sad. Not sure exactly why, but I think I know and it's nothing to do with drugs. This man has been through hell most of his life. He has given us so much through his music. If he never wants to perform or make another album, I'm totally fine with that. He's 70 yrs old and he's been at this since he was 20. He's a national treasure, they'll never be another like him, not ever. I just want him to be happy and healthy. We owe him that. God bless you, Wilson brothers. Truly amazing.
Dennis WilsonForever No, not sad. You need to watch a lot more film of Brian. He did not show his feelings on his face. Also Read his autobiography I AM BRIAN WILSON. He really shows you quite a bit of his heart in that book.
I read his expression as shy and not comfortable with that level of praise/being the center of attention. Maybe he just wants to smile and play music with no pressure. He looks like he'd rather be there for the music, and I'm sure to reconnect with old friends, hopefully one on one. I know what it's like to have too much stimulus. It was probably very hard for him to sit through it.
It's about time Brian Wilson was recognized for his musical genius and contribution to decades of beautiful songs with his brothers, Al Jardine and Mike Love. RIP Carl and Dennis.
Okay, I admit tears streamed...watching this Elton John's words "can you feel the love tonight" ran through my head. A lot of love in that theater. Thank heavens.
I wish Scorsese would do a documentary like his George Harrison one for Brian or the Beach Boys. But I don't think he was as big a fan of them as other bands.

I watched Love and Mercy about two weeks ago,omg it made me cry I met The Beach Boys when I was 13 ,I’m now 72 I will never forget that experience. Brian Wilson is a musical genius his second wife literally saved his life from that horrific therapist i remember watching an interview with John Cusak who portrayed him his the move ,he said he went to Brian’s house and it was so lovely filled with laughter and lots of positive energy .
Loved the Beach Boys since the 60's, and when I went to see Brian Wilson and his 50th Anniversary of Pet Sounds concert, I was amazed at all the generations of people there and as soon as Brian entered onto the stage, the place erupted in so much applause like "Rock Royalty" was walking in front of us.... hadn't seen that much enthusiasm or applause for anyone in ages, since I saw the Monkees in concert decades ago...

Brian's father Murry used to beat him and his brothers within an inch of their lives. Brian had a severe mental breakdown as an adult and couldn't get out of bed or write music for several years. He was then taken over, controlled and abused by his caretaker/therapist Eugene Landy and eventually had to be rescued from him through legal and family intervention. He lives today on an even keel only with the help of numerous and high doses of psychopharmaceutical drugs. On the other hand, he's also one of the most gifted musical composers of this or any time, and leaves other musicians from every generation in total awe of what he creates. Brian has retained that rare sense of childlike wonder and openness that characterized other geniuses like Mozart or Matisse or Einstein or St. Francis of Assisi. He's married to a beautiful woman who loves him deeply and has gladly given her whole life over to his care and safety. He's got a whole new set of children through Melinda , and a whole new generation out there becoming aware of his music, which will be remembered and played long after he and the rest of us are gone. A national treasure. All in all, Brian Wilson is the luckiest unlucky bastard on the planet.
+DivineSimply You can't compare the compositional power of popular music to the classic composers obviously... but still Brian didn't have the musical knoledge of Mozart, Beethoven or any of those classic composers, he was a songwriter mostly and they were masters of composition and had deep knowledge plus genius talent. Brian just have the divine spark of genuine music understanding, that's why a sophisticated pop album like Pet Sounds came out, if He would have started young in a classical music career we don't know what could have happenened, but most probably would be a great classic composer, with that talent + studying.
you are almost perfectly right, it was the abuse too but alot of it was the emotional abuse from his father. Brian Wilson has Divergent Personality disorder, if his family was supportive he might have been bipolar but his soul was metaphorically drained by his father and then his doctor so people can make him uncomfortable. it doesnt help that his cousin Mike Love was a constant bully and doubter. Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are two sides of the same coin and well although he constantly fought for what he believed in, since the pressure came from the one place you would expect support your family, so he crumbled. but he build himself back together with his new and true family, there is too much of a stigma toward mental disorders so people are so unclear on what it truly is and people or so opinionated on what they think it is...
The best! And clean fun music. I’m 58 and started his album on my new turn table I bought at 11 yrs old. Still listening to him and the boys to this day. Love you Brian. Keep positive!! 👍🏼🙏🏼❤️

My HB childhood.... sigh...grew up not far from 'the boys', saw them more than any other band. I remember flying home to O.C. one night when planes still gave you earphones - 'In My Room' was playing just as I was flying over Marina del Rey. Landed to find out Dennis had drowned around the time we flew over MDR. Now Carl gone with lung cancer. Brian and the Wrecking Crew were, in our opinion, the greatest talents in existence, still are. Thank you for posting this. Tears. - from an old surfer chick, US Coast Guard mom
from another brian wilson from canada belated congradulations on the kennedy honors i grew up during motown area and no body every mentioned the beach boys now they want me to sing
Thank You Brian for your gentle harmonies and music. You are the poet of the music that makes me happy. I still have my first 45 record that I bought which is I Get Around. Love and Mercy we all need.
Without Brian there wouldn’t be The Beach Boys he’s the geniuse I admire him because of all the abuse he had as child hood and then him giving up for awhile with drugs ect he got back up and it wasn’t easy with all that he faced in his life he got the courage. Of getting back up and move forward I’ve been a beach boy fan since I way 14 years old now I’m 57 years old and The Beach Boys will never fade love you all beach boys god bless keep it up no matter what thank You
In watching part 2 where the audience stood up and starting dancing in their seats...that is exactly how it was on October 15, 2016 when I saw him in Sacramento, CA at his 50th Anniversary concert of his album PET SOUNDS album. It made you feel so blessed to be able to be a part of something like this.
Diana Ross, for all her talent, carries the rep of a self-obsessed diva, but she seemed so genuinely happy for Brian Wilson here that, at least for me, it put a pretty big dent in that image.
+redwoodcitizen I totally agree with your statement. People are always saying that Diana Ross is self absorbed and self centred, but in this clip, you can see love and respect for his talent in her eyes. I remember watching this when it was first televised, and I was so happy to have the Beach and Diana Ross honored together
That is simply not true. I agree that saying that someone "has talent" is sometimes a way of implying that they didn't work for it, but saying that we're all equally talented is not true.

The KSH used to put out such meaningful tributes that were always so enjoyable. This one in particular was excellent, selecting tribute artists to show how the genius of Brian’s music transcended culturally and globally. I love that beautiful Diana Ross was in the same class as Brian and how she showed her passion for his music. Two musical icons!
