Agree completely. It's amazing watching Jimmy and JP rocking along, while Robert watches and analyzes. I always wonder what was going through Robert's mind as the back up vocals and choir joined in. A haunting addition akin to his STH montage in the movie. And lastly, that sustained final chord carried by all, was spine tingling. Not many ways to finish off one of the best songs ever recorded, but that was one of them.
Just in case those unfamiliar with Led Zeppelin are unaware, their Drummer sadly passed away some time ago, his son is playing the drums here. His signature hat was a bowler hat, thus the bowler hats in the choir. Very very classy tribute.
Jason Bonham, son of the late John Henry "Bonzo" Bonham, shares a fateful coincidence with another son of another drummer. Ringo Starr's eldest Zak had been recruited by Oasis to be their concert drummer before Liam and Noel had their full-blown split. Zak played with Oasis and was also present with other sons of the Beatles when they eventually did a benefit concert covering their fathers' music. Jason Bonham eventually joined Oasis at some point when Zak had left or I could be confusing my timelines as to who joined Oasis first. Both sons of drummers became truly skilled drummers themselves.
If I remember correctly, Jason later told Howard Stern that his presence was a surprise to the band, hence the shocked and excited reaction when they saw him!!
While Heart is getting their much deserved recognition for their performance, the musical director who put this masterpiece together should get some too. Every detail was impeccable, every performance was flawless, and this was a result of their work.
@@ArchieFatcackie he didn't play the solo from the song, he tried to do his own solo and it was awful. Everyone is expecting to hear one of, if not the most iconic solos ever, and he plays...that mess. That kind of performance you cover the song note for note, and he didn't do that. If you've got the balls to play Jimmy page's solo infront of Jimmy page, and the president of the United States, you had better have the talent to back it up, and this guy didn't. He should be ashamed of that shit solo he played.
@@Dan-su2qt Absolute nonsense. He wasn’t the arranger the whole song was shortened much more than the original including the solo. Also, when did Page ever play as one of his recordings? He treated every live performance as a jamming session.
January 4, 2024. Who in 2024 watching and listening to this masterpiece? I've been watching this video for years and I like it more and more. . . March 11, 2024. In January I saw it while in Madrid, Spain. Now, two months later, I see him again while in Malaga, in the south of Spain. And I want to tell you... every time I see it it's better.
This woman has got balls to play such an iconic song in front of one of the most iconic bands in the world and not only that, play it right, and hit a chord deep enough to make these guys emotional. Kick ass woman!
Imagine the pressure of playing Led Zeppelin in front of Led Zeppelin, and then being such consummate professionals you pull THIS off. Heart are truly greats in their field.
Ok, I agree with part of your statement. But why did they leave part of the song out? Why did they need a massive choir to fill in? Because they can't pull the weight of what zeppelin could do even on a night they felt "off". And having them there doesn't change the fact that they needed to fit into time restraints and live up to media expectations. That's why bands like led zeppelin didn't get signed to contracts in the beginning. Because they were a round peg trying to fit into a square hole. Their songs were to long to fit onto album ("vinyl") sides. Where is that rebellious side of rock and roll anymore? It's not alive in the older guys anymore. I want that back, where is that now? Where is that fire? I seriously hope some newer generations find it, or we'll all be generations lost in space.......
@@jasonbauer5488 as if you’re talking about rock and roll and having fire when you drone on like that. The most boring commenter on RU-vid. Mr Negative, anything but rock and roll. @@jasonbauer5488performance time constraints. They almost always do that during Kennedy Center Honors. They don't always play the entire song no matter who it is.
No it's not, the solo, the part everyone knows, is terrible and that guy should be ashamed of himself. What the F is with you people thinking this was good
even after 12 years have past......you see over 142 million people watched ......and 61,920 comments have been made.......that alone, speaks for itself. I must have watched this at least 100 times. Best live performance ever. Goosebumps every time........
I think beyond even that is the moment you can literally SEE in Robert Plant's face " okay .... THAT'S what it's like to have heard it when WE did it " . He was on the edge of his seat as she went into the " to be a rock and not to roll " line and it brought him to tears.
Robert plant when sings live is not like when he recorded it...Nancy's hit all the notes and the end she let's it rip that's when he got emotional.. that power and just amazing...
The emotion from Robert is about remembering his mate John Bonham, who he knew before Led Zeppelin. Robert is responding to the wonderful tribute to John, by way of the choir wearing the bowler hats at the climax of the song.
I’m a 62 year old woman who was in a Led Zep cover band in Detroit in the 70’s This is the best thing I have seen in years! They smashed it! Ann Wilson rocked out! And Jason! Just like Jimmy and Robert I wept a bit. Late to the game but now can’t walk away 😊
I'm also 62 yrs old. ( male ) No one is a bigger fan of Led Zeppelin than I am. I've been playing ( guitar ) & singing this song ( at the same time ) for over 50 years ( as with most of the Zeppelin catalog, along with hundreds of other songs ). And that includes performing on stage for nearly 20 years. They completely cut out/omitted the most intricate & beautiful part of the guitar intro to this song, and jumped right into the lyrics. I would've much rather seen them perform "the Rain Song", which is FAR MORE difficult to play & perform vs Stairway.
This is unquestionably one the great performances of modern times - the way Nancy strums, Ann sings, Jason drums, the orchestra builds, the choir explodes, John Paul Jones nods, Jimmy Page smiles, and Robert Plant cries...........next level performance
Considered by many to be the greatest song by the greatest rock band. Not once have they ever whined of NEVER receiving a Grammy for their monumental work when the band was active.
Unlike today's ungrateful azzholes who want everything handed to them. The Grammy's are ruined. Over. They mean nothing anymore. Better to stay away from that shit.
Absolutelyvthe best heart moving tribute thexwilson sister knocked it right out of the building, even Robety, John and Jimmy were spirituality and emotionally moved❣️wonderful tribute to the drummer having his sin play! The thought that went with this performance, top❤ notch!!❤❤❤❤
I think Plant was tearing up there at the end. Truly an epic tribute. Arguably the best rendition of the song ever.. Certain parts of that song play into Ann WIlson's strengths as a vocalist, and she takes full advantage.. A choir of angels doesn't hurt ever.
Watching Robert Plant trying to hold back his tears is whole another level of feels man. Dare I say that this might be one of the best live performances of all time.
BEST ALL TIME COVER. THE MOST BLESSED COVER. BETWEEN LED AND PLANT, AND OFFSPRING OF THE BONZO, BLESSED. THE VOCALS CRIED OUT WITH THE KIND OF INTENSITY THAT YOU KNOW THERE IS ONLY ONE AUDIENCE MEMBER TO IMPRESS WITH THEM. THE DRUMMER HITTING WITH LOVE FOR THE ONLY ONE AUDIENCE MEMBER NOT THERE. THE GUITARS WEEPING WITH JOY AS THIER MUSICIANS LOOKED UP IN WONDER AT HOW THEY HAVE COME TO THIS, WITH EXPLODING SOULS. THE AUDIENCE APPLAUDING TO A STANDING OVATION KNOWING WHAT THEY WITNESSED WAS FOR NOT FOR THIER PERSONAL OR GROUP ENJOYMENT BUT BECAUSE THEY HAD A SEAT AT THE FULL CIRCLE.
This was my wife’s favourite song. When she withdrew into her own mind due to brain cancer, I played it every night for her, to see if I could get any response from her. She passed away a year ago, and I accidentally came across this performance. I can’t stop tearing up.
I am very sorry for your loss. My sister was diagnosed with brain cancer in Dec. and she passed a few days later on Dec 19th 2022. She grew up in the 70's and loved Led Zeppelin... Life is not the same without her.
When my mum seemed lost because of her Alzheimer, music let me stay closer to her. I am pretty sure your wife enjoyed the music you shared and share with her. Big hug/abrazo from Argentina
I'm so sorry for your loss. I know what it's like to loose that special someone in your life. Stairway to Heaven is such a fitting piece. Take good care.
Ann and Nancy really rocked that song 🎵Amazing show. 😢 not a dry eye. So glad we grew up with this music. Beautiful. 70s were the best times of our lives. Thank you ROCKERS. ♥️
Yes" es x que lo escuche cuando era niño" the charly"??? El ohido nunca miente" ho percusion del sonido segun my forma de interpretar los sonidos de voz y de instrumentos de los que tocan " los instrumentalistas "???pensaria yo"???
No he didn't wtf? He played the solo wrong and it sounded terrible, Robert plant was probably crying cause of just how bad that guitarist messed up one of the most iconic solos of all time
Yes, it was because of Jason. The only drummer who could play "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin correctly was the original drummer, Jon Bonham, who was Jason's father. This song requires control, finesse, and complex drum arrangements. Phil Collins attempted to play it during the Live Aid concert in 1985 to help the band get back on tour, but his performance failed terribly, resulting in the band never playing again. Therefore, for Jon Bonham's son to perform flawlessly in front of the band was an incredible sight to see. It was a true tribute to his father in many ways. Rest in peace, Jon Bonham.
I think its the fact the song they wrote is being performed in honor of them so many yrs later. Dude is holding back full on weeping. That clutched hand
I actually agree with your opinion. I felt that too. And watch letterman interview after the award show!! I believe we are spot on. You will see!!!! ☮️👍🏽💯👋
Lot of tragedy happened to Plant while in the later stages of the band. He's great about his time in the band, but it was over before he was 30, and I'm sure it's not an easy place to revisit, nor living with the legend he created, which was largely out of his control at the time also, as well as into eternity.
A hundred backup singers, an entire orchestra , and Ann Wilson powers louder and clearer than all of it and sounds flawlessly natural Amazing singer. A true enigma.
People who let their feelings get involved with the unreal (the past) can nver be happy. Enjoy the Here and Now...why it is called the Gift or the Present
Brought chills down my spine. Always loved this song. Heart and all the singers did a wonderful job. I loved seeing Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones looking clean cut and handsome.❤
This version is better than many I’ve seen, including by Zeppelin themselves. Very powerful, with orchestra and choir. It’s elevated way beyond “rock song” to the land of Musical Masterpiece.
Led Zeppelin are notorious for not exactly loving it when people cover their songs. So the fact that they’re smiling like this, and Robert Plant actually cries, just goes to show you how incredible this arrangement of the song really is.
@@sidewinderenigma That's exactly right...Plant said that on a show he was just telling Page that they should've invited Jason, and then he appeared on stage.
I think this is actually better than theirs. They have a full orchestra behind them. Zep are better with their instruments (Nancy is excellent, but... Jimmy Page? Who is better than him? There are contenders, but the only guy I definitely put ahead is dead 50+ years) but Ann's voice is better than any of the boys.
Can you imagine, Jason Bonham covering one of the most iconic songs of his dad’s career and being watched by his dad’s former bandmates. How much emotion must have been running through his veins.
Yes beautiful donde el autor se emberraque y no le trame jua.jua.jua hay tirraria era caja my mismo" ji.ji.ji " the charly" bay me diga huy me desfiguraste el tema jua.juajua"???
Actually, I think that Ann, as powerful as she tried to portray, was no where near the power of this song. It is the song itself, and the backup singers in the hats. She was.....OK in it. There were 1,000 singers who could do it. Not trying to take away from her effort....but she did not MAKE this song.
Too bad it's been edited by some monster who has zero respect for Led Zeppelin and Heart and music in general. Not sure if it's the person who uploaded this or not, but it is a despicable thing to do to such a glorious masterpiece.
It gives me goosebumps and lump in my throat every time. I saw Heart about 15 years ago and they played a Led Zeppelin cover. My favorite is their cover of The Battle of Ev’more under the band The Love Mongers.
4/12/2024 Wow. Nobody covers Zeppelin in front of Zeppelin, let alone have Robert Plant get emotional, and the band give a standing O at the end. This is incredible.
Imagine being young. Full of live. Becoming one of the largest and most influential bands ever, growing old, losing your band mates, then to hear your lifes work being just completely honored by these people. Truly amazing.
As a band, I can only imagine the feeling on humility when you hear your band’s top iconic hit being played masterfully as it was here. It has to hit you when you realize your creation influenced THIS. What an amazing way to be thanked and appreciated.
This was my dad's favourite song, he would always listen to it, every morning he played it. Naively I knew this would be his funeral song one day, in a long time I hoped. After a 5 year battle with cancer, last month, as i've always imagined, we played it during his funeral. This tribute song will always hold the biggest place in my heart as I will always feel his presence when listening to it. I love you dad, can't wait to listen to it together one day.
My favorite...your father has amazing and spiritual sense that a lot of people are not capable of having. I'm sure he is listening EVERY SINGLE TIME you play this LOUD and CLEAR!!
So sorry for your loss. This too will be my funeral song in many years to come I hope . But it’s spiritual haunting and almost in my dna. Part of my life.
Too bad it's been edited by some monster who has zero respect for Led Zeppelin and Heart and music in general. Not sure if it's the person who uploaded this or not, but it is a despicable thing to do to such a glorious masterpiece.
Why does this rendition of the song bring a 63 year old grown man to tears. Perhaps it's the greatest song ever written, and to see it being performed in such a magnificent way and watch the originators enjoy it so.
It's that choir. Phenomenal. And their reactions at the end when the large choir comes out is great, they were like little kids. It was so cool to watch.
I can't begin to imagine how they were feeling, knowing they wrote it, and have played that classic many many times. And then to hear it played back with heart felt perfection and passion, must have been a real joy and honour for them.
This has been one of the songs that has gotten me through so many of life's hiccups. Lost loves, life's issues that kick you in the head. My beloved Mother died a few months ago and this amazing version has brought me some solace. Thank you ladies for your amazing performance.
