@eneryi4457
@eneryi4457 8 лет назад
+FunnyGamer72 and how would that work?
@WhileTrueCode
@WhileTrueCode 8 лет назад
+FunnyGamer72 It just means that 0db does not mean zero power. My audio receiver is loud as hell at 0db; it basically means I'm not trying to increase gain or attenuate away from whatever the baseline amplification is set at. Usually I set the volume to about -20db to intentially attenuate the signal so my neighbors aren't angry. In wireless, you often see signal strength rated as ALWAYS negative db. A 0db "gain" would be the baseline: assuming 100% of the signal power is being received. You can't receive more than 100% the original transmit power so signal strength "gain" would never be positive. Instead, it's measuring the attenuation away from an ideal 100% which means negative.

Not quite up to typical Linus Tech Tips standards. I recommend a redo after an afternoon of research. You don't have to mention Fletcher-Munson curves, DBA vs DBB or DBC, or common reference points of how loud typical things are. But maybe consider reiterating the overall delivery of understanding, and how to encapsulate that better. Mention that it's relative to background noise which I feel is crucial, even if Fletcher-Munson curves are not, Sones may be worth mentioning as well. If you want help writing a script I am acoustically obsessed, and rather poetic at times :P Love the channel!

Most videos are intended to show the RU-vidr’s ability of talking fast, none stop and move from topic to topic , so the viewer cannot really follow and digest. And at the end, they feel good that they have knowledge that’s not understandable by average viewer. As he well said at the end: EGO!

What happens if you're so loud you reach the uppermost limit of the decibel scale? Does that make you a bell end?
@LianSirenia
@LianSirenia 10 лет назад
Huh, I always just thought the numbers were linearly organized, so that it was simply larger numbers are louder, lower are quieter. Then again I shouldn't be surprised after shenanigans like contrast ratio or using megabits instead of megabytes to advertise internet speed just cause you can show bigger numbers that way...
@FilipTheGreat

Transfer of information is the main reason why the dB measurement is used. Since music(sound) is transfer of information from one place to another, the dB are used as a measurement. The trick is as Linus said, the way our ears can receive that information, regardless of what the output was :) To add a bit more confusion to all of this, lets say a source is emitting 30mW (miliwats) of "power" and that is being transferred to a cable with 3dB loss(divided by 2) then it comes to a speaker that amplifies it by 10dB(multiplied by 10), in the end we have 30mW / 2 *10 =150mW or around 21.8 dB

2:16 so what you’re telling me is this and I quote. 1(DB) Is 0.66X louder than 0(DB) & That 2(DB) Is 1.32X louder than 0(DB) & That 3(DB) Is 2X louder than 0(DB) & That 4(DB) Is 2.64X louder than 0(DB) & That 5(DB) Is 3.3X louder than 0(DB) & That 6(DB) Is 3.96X louder than 0(DB) & That 7(DB) Is 4.62X louder than 0(DB) & That 8(DB) Is 5.28X louder than 0(DB) & That 9(DB) Is 5.94X louder than 0(DB) & That 10(DB) Is 6.6X louder than 0(DB). But that doesn’t make sense because 10(DB) is about 10 times louder than 0(DB) so it makes no sense here’s what I think would make more sense and I quote. 1(DB) Is 1X louder than 0(DB) & That 2(DB) Is 2X louder than 0(DB) & That 3(DB) Is 3X louder than 0(DB) & That 4(DB) Is 4X louder than 0(DB) & That 5(DB) Is 5X louder than 0(DB) & That 6(DB) Is 6X louder than 0(DB) & That 7(DB) Is 7X louder than 0(DB) & That 8(DB) Is 8X louder than 0(DB) & That 9(DB) Is 9X louder than 0(DB) & That 10(DB) Is 10X louder than 0(DB). But you’re still a good RU-vidr though so no hard feelings.

It may be derivative from audio production, where you can actually go past 0, but the idea is to keep it under 0. It's more intuitive this way, but I see no reason to give the same measure for consumers.

dB has no units, Linus. dB is a ration between two values of the same unit. Let's get an example: 10(log10(1000000(n/m²)/10(n/m²))). See the fraction? anything that's the same on the top and bottom can be substituted by 1 (we usually cut them out since anything*1=anything). So, the fraction (apple/apple)=1 and, also (n/m²)/(n/m²)=1. Going back, then, to: 10(log10(1000000(n/m²)/10(n/m²)))=10(log10(100000)=10*5=50. Hence, 1+E5 n/m² is +50dB of 1+E1 n/m² - but the dB there is no unit, it's just a way to inform that the number comes from a peculiar way of describing ratios. Another thing: why dB? For many reasons and one of them is us, human beings. See, our sensory system is logarithmic and, therefore, it turns exponentials into straight lines. If I go from 10dB to 20dB I perceive the audio intensity to have doubled even though the sound pressure has increased by 8 fold. Remember when we were children and people told us we could do anything? Well ... they were either ignorant about live or just plain liars. We can't make thermodynamic machines more efficient than the Carnot cycle, we can't travel faster than the speed of light and, this is important, we can't explain dB on a short video. To be honest, we might, some day, be able to brake the Carnot and speed of light limits .... but we'll never be able to explain dB on a short video. Here is a less short video about it and why sometimes dB is 10*Log and other times it's 20*Log. This channel is amazing and the guy who makes the videos so thoughtful he leaves a link to the notes on the video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1mulRI-EZ80.html Just to shake your curiosity: what the hell is 0dB? Well ... Log is "to what number I should power the base (10, in this case) so the result is 1?" ... well, any number to the power 0 is 1. 0dB means both values are the same.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but seen a lot of charts like the one shown from Wikipedia and realized that they actually give no context whatsoever. None of the referenced are even remotely solid themselves. I can tell you from personal experience that some jack-hammers are much louder than some non-electric chainsaws. By the way, the perceived loudness of a chainsaw should be louder because of it's frequency. I also used to live about 40 feet from a railroad track. some passenger trains breezed by with I nice light whooshing sound, others shook everything in the house. What is the "home level" of a TV? When I visit my parents, they seem to think it's loud enough to hear in every room on the house. That's somewhat due to how loud they keep it and somewhat due to the acoustics of the house, another factor that isn't accounted for at all in these charts. If you ask 20 people what "home level" for a TV is, you'll get 20 different answers. At least this one has distances for most of the very subjective sound references. I like how one that doesn't is a stun grenade. Yeah, it's loud, but ask the how loud is it if you're the sender and how loud is it if you're the receiver. Then you've still got no real information because you have no idea how close either party was. If you established the distance and we know how much pressure a stun grenade has (assuming that value is the same with all stun grenades) then you still have to explain what that amount of pressure sounds like. I have a sneaking suspicion that it's anywhere between 200 and 2000 times as loud as a TV (set at a home level) at one meter. I challenge anyone to provide a single reference from this chart that can actually reasonably be used as a reference for how loud a noise is. At best, this information came from somebody taking averages of the huge range of sounds generated from these objects, already making it completely useless as a reference. I'm guessing it's more along the lines of somebody just saying, "I think this is louder than this", until they got to something that they remembered made their head hurt and then remembering a couple documentaries the watched that said how many decimals some stuff like stun grenades and jet-engines were (747 or fighter jet-engine, by the way?). I'll give that chart one thing; it really looks like it's saying something.
