Deciding our Van Layout Design! (3D SketchUp Walkthrough) | Transit Van Conversion E02

This time we create a 3D van layout design for our van conversion using SketchUp Make, so we can get a better feel for the different options and compromises we need to make. We went through many van conversion layout ideas as there's limited space to work, so had to keep refining as we're hoping to add a shower and have a fixed bed.
We modelled our Ford Transit in Sketchup as accurately as we could and made a walkthrough so we could visualise if our van conversion layout would work (or not!). But, first we had to take out the bulkhead to reveal the full space that we have to work with and mark out our first draft design.
We made a template on some graph paper with cut-out pieces for different objects like choices of fridge, oven, heaters and things like that. It was fun putting it together like a puzzle and figuring out what we liked, while trying to make it all fit!
Later we had transferred that model into SketchUp with the most accurate measurements we could get with our tape measure (there's a lot of curves!). Now we can start to see how the whole van conversion might all come together. Will it work? Not sure, we'll see!

if you went with a collapsible shower you could have more seating.

Yes true, we decided that we'd rather sacrifice a bit of the seating area to have the shower fixed so there's minimal faff to use it. Also it gives us somewhere to put the composting toilet when it's not in use. We'll see how it all turns out at the end, we're sure there'll be some things we would have done differently by the time we finish 😊

Nice episode with some good planning! Tip for your non functional electric screwdriver. Replace the NiCad cell with a Li-Ion 18650 cell (easy) and replace the charger with one suitable for that cell. You will find the screwdriver works better than it ever did for power & speed with a much much longer battery life than it ever had. A useful tool again.

Well it's certainly looking good inside and while it's early days yet, I think you will need more storage perhaps with more high level lockers.

Cheers! Yeah we're always looking to get more creative with the storage! The sketchup doesn't show it but we also have the large space above the cab which is going to be our larder probably, and we'll have the overhead cabinets on the bed on both sides, one for each of us. Maybe we'll add some shelves/cubbies or something like that in the garage too 👍

Hiya, I’m about to buy my first ever van and convert it. Scary prospect really but your channel and others are a big help, so cheers for that. Sketch Up looks a cool tool too. Hope you reconsider installing the shower, it takes up so much space and honestly, you won’t enjoy showering in it. Just my 2 cents……about to watch your next episode now. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺

Cool, what van are you going for? And yeah can relate to it being a little intimidating to start off 🙂 but we find just concentrating on each new project as it comes helps keep it always moving forward 👍 yeah the sketchup model was handy to visualise a little more accurately if what we were thinking might work, so far we've stayed pretty true to it. Right now we think we will use the shower a fair amount as we're planning to be living off grid most of the time, we're going to have it as a drying room and space for the toilet too so hopefully it will be a worthwhile use of the space 😛 glad you're enjoying the channel and hope you enjoy your build!

Here in Australia it’s a 12mth+ wait to get a new Sprinter, Crafter or Transit. So I’m going to order an Iveco Daily 6 LWB with a High Roof, it’s only a 3mth wait hopefully. Which exact variant of Maxxfan did you choose?

@@ciccorilla 12 months! Wow that is quite a wait...! We went for the Maxxfan Deluxe in the tint colour lid, electric opening with remote and 400mm size. Think the model number is the 7500KI40T. HTH!

Hey! Do you guys still have your sketch up file available? I would love to download it to save myself all the effort of measuring and drawing the initial stuff. Id be happy to buy it from you for your labor time put into it. Its pretty rare to find plans for the Jumbo size

Hey, sure we still have the file. We tried to measure it as best as we could but it's a bit tricky given the curvy nature of the van! It's a fairly decent approximation though we think and was really helpful at the beginning. And yeah we're really interested to see how similar or not it turns out at the end too 😃. So far it's stayed fairly close to it! The sketchup is quite simplified obviously but the rough layout is still what we're working towards 😊Don't worry about buying it, we need to clean it up a little but will stick it up somewhere to download at some point

Glad you liked it, now we just have to build it! Definitely made it a lot easier to figure out some aspects of the design (and discount some ideas) when we put it into sketchup. Congrats on the van purchase too! We considered a ducato, looks like a nice van. Hope the start of the conversion is going well for you 😊

Can I ask what the purpose of the little pieces of reflective on the walls were for?

Which pieces do you mean, could you link to the point in the video? But it sounds like you might be talking about the sound deadening material? That's small pieces on the panels to add a bit of weight to them to dampen the sound a bit and stop them vibrating as much.
