Forgot to add regarding the sawmill, your solution is a good one, a better one is a dedicated sawmill shed with access to both sides of the mill. That's how mine is setup, easier to cleanup around it and better airflow in the summertime. Just my 2 cents worth. Enjoy your videos!

Hello 👋 Chuck, I noticed a yearling sucking on your newest momma cow with the new born heifer. I’m not trying to tell you I know best, first of all. If it were my animal, I would try to wean the yearling to give the baby more milk and help the cow immensely. This is only my opinion, not a criticism. I love watching your videos and always keep up with your journey. The sawmill will be a good addition to the hay barn with a good exhaust system for the diesel engine. Have a great evening and I hope you have a wonderful tomorrow. 40 Shades of Green Farm, west Tennessee

ok great question............ 1. are you going to have a helper. 2. think about what /where you will be putting the slabs and fletches and sq edge boards 3.do you want to unload at the end or the loading side. Here are 2 youtubers to watch lumber capital log yard and bearded lumber as how they off load the mill.

Good points. I’ll have a helps some of the time but mostly just me. Slabs and trash will have to go somewhere but I’m not sure where yet. I’ll probably unload on the side. I’ve watched both of those channels but I need to watch again and pay attention to their unloading procedures. Good things to think about. Appreciate it.

In my opinion I'd plan on building a future site for the mill, and not add on to this barn for hay storage. Sawdust is combustible; so is hay.
@oldnorthstateoutdoors2002
@oldnorthstateoutdoors2002 7 месяцев назад
My only concern would be sawdust and hay in the building with the mill is fire danger. Saw dust is explosive in the right conditions and of course hay is very flammable. Not a deal breaker but something I would definitely keep in mind while you're deciding. I am very envious of your barn Chuck.

It would depend on how much you plan to use it. On mine the sawdust and more importantly SLABS. They get out of control at my mill. I built my building with no walls so I can get logs in and slabs out on the sides and boards out on the ends.
@rochrich1223
@rochrich1223 7 месяцев назад
I'd consider an angled set up with the saw mill. If you angle it so that you can pull the boards out the door, that would facilitate stickering the boards and putting pallets of boards together. It would also get the slab wood out of the way.

Chuck, I believe the first orientation would be best if you can manage the saw dust. Being able to open/close the sidewall, awning style would seem provide the multiple benefit. Remember, discharging the sawdust into the barn with no ventilation, will require a respiratory protection every time you operate. Also sawdust would eventually coat everything. One bad day could cause the hay barn to become an ash pit. I like the idea though 👍

Re: your diesel fuel from a 28 year Chevron employee. Yes! Very important to have an additive that disperses water, especially if you’re not filling the tank. Diesel creates condensation. You can also check to see if you have water in your tank by getting , water finding paste. It’s yellow or orange, you spread about a 3” stripe on something that will reach the bottom of your tank. Color doesn’t change from diesel but any water & it turns bright red. Water is at the bottom of the tank so good idea to keep track so it doesn’t get up to level of output & doesn’t rust out the tank.

Personally I would probably back your mill in the corner at a angle to where u can load logs avoiding the shed next to the door opening and to where u can still get the tractor on the operator side to get the majority of the sawdust back dragged out to be picked up. Also would recommend a hay rack wagon for your dimensional wood that’s milled and junk slab go straight back on the loader forks to take to the scrap pile. Good luck with however you choose your set up, enjoy following along!

Hi Chuck, As you mentioned, sawdust does accumulate. But in an interior environment, it gets everywhere. Also, waste wood is a problem when cutting. In any given log, there are at least four slabs of waste wood. I find that a separate open air covers seems to be the best solution for mills. Sawdust and waste are thrown behind for disposal. logs enter from the front and lumber is stacked to the side. Good luck in deciding how you want your milling operation to flow.

Hi Chuck… the new mama baldie had an older black calf standing at her rear sucking on her between her hind legs stealing milk. The older calf will take all the colostrum & milk after that & the new calf will get no nutrition. Might want to consider getting a no nurse ring for the older calf to keep it off the black/white face new mama. Chicks are looking good.. it’s amazing how fast Cornish X grow & the amount of food they put away a day. Guess your drought is over for now anyway. Hope the fields soak up a lot of that rain & the pasture grass takes off at spring flush. The creek has turned into a river this winter. You might be able to build a small hydro power unit & use it if the grid electricity goes out in winter to keep lights, well, brooder heat lamps & the diesel tank running.

The ironic thing about this video is that about half way through it there was an advertisement for.........jeans!

I usually don't use Stabil in stored diesel although not a bad idea. Drain the water separator on the machines and routine filter changes on both tank and machines is good enough for the amount of diesel you store. The well pump low pressure switch with the little handle on the side is more trouble than they are worth, although there may be other reasons why it was recommended. A 40-60 psi pressure switch on our farm well for many years is all that's needed and never lost a pump. For the sawmill setup, several things to consider. The big one is the future plans for the shed. The sawmill shouldn't set out in the elements if it don't have to. Go with the setup you mentioned first in the video. This will allow immediate use of the mill and productivity to begin and let that guide you to the more permanent setup. The mill is portable so it isn't a huge deal to change things around. Electrical service to the shed is the biggest fire risk. Rodent control is important, especially since hay is stored there. All wiring in conduit will help you sleep better at night. Since not much hay is stored there most of the time this lessens the risk. Sawdust is not that much more of a contributor if managed properly.

I understand where you're coming from,not wanting to expose your mill to the elements,but Mills aren't that fragile, mines out side covered with a heavy tarp and doing just fine. Dust is explosive and sawdust will spontaneous ignite if not kept cleaned up. It will be everywhere,not just on the floor. How much would it cost to replace the barn and everything in it, verse's a saw shed with with ability to have tractor access all the way around it for log placement and sawdust removal?

I would think that setting up the saw mill long ways would work out the best assuming you have the room to turn the tractor to be able to set the logs in front of where they need to be to load them into the saw mill or to place them directly on the mill. A vacuum system is easy to put together for the saw dust so that shouldn't be an issue however stack placement might be depending again on how you load them into the mill. Maybe in the future you could always build a new building for the mill alone that would be perfect for it but I wouldn't be in a huge hurry for that unless you find the current spot in desperate need of being more ergo dynamic.

That must be rather critical to have 100 chicks at $3 each in brooders when the power goes out on you. You must have some responsible landowners up stream to have such muggy conditions with the stream clear enough to see the rocks. What some viewers do not know is that it makes for boring videos to have a tractor warming up. People, let Chuck show us what parts he chooses and run his tractors as he likes without us telling us every step he takes to get going. My mind went imediately to the same thing you have already been thinking about having the mill in the corner, the sawdust discharge. It seems the two biggest areas of mess with a sawmill are the sawdust discharge and the slab wood which tends to accumulate. Because of these two waste streams, I would favor putting it perpendicular to the breezeway. With this you can get tractors in on both sides to feed the logs to the mill and to keep the area clean. I see you have five rows on hay bales. If each hay roll is 4 feet thick, then it seems you have the 26 feet you need. Just one point, have you considered putting it in place what many would call backwards? If you put the hitch side against the wall it will be a pain to install, but I think your log access and finished board removal should be smoother. The extra 20 minutes in installation seems small when accounting for the time spent placing logs and snatching the boards and slabs. I just thought of another advantage of placing the mill backwards. You could put in another header and open a 16-foot door in the end of the shed to bring in the logs, saving you more barn space. A high rollup door seems the right choice for this application. Please remember I only spent three minutes thinking about this while you have spent hours.
