Deck Collection Part Eight - decks I wanted to love (but didn’t) 

A common misconception in the tarot community is that beautiful art = art you can read with when that's not always the case. Also decks are entirely personal; never feel pressured to buy or be able to read with the deck du jour in the tarot community. There will always be another and there are always decks out there that will suit you much better/

How right and honest you are, thank you! I have the same problem with 5 of the decks you mentioned and with other 5...Sometimes, it's a question of aesthetics, others it's some other thing that just does NOT connect!

The same thing happened to me with The Wild Unkown. I wanted it so much but when I got it I just couldn't connect with it at all.

As a designer, I totally feel you. I can't even with the decks that use Papyrus and/or terrible Photoshop composites. So, so bad.

I’m with you on the Wild Unknown Tarot. It seems to be very popular, however I don’t know how to love it. I feel like I’d be trying to pull crumbs from the imagery in order to read it. In all honesty, I’m quite fond of the Fountain Tarot - it’s really interesting to hear your perspective! For me personally, I tend to feel overwhelmed when I read so the Fountain’s clear-cut symbolism is the way to go. I find it somewhat soothing. I understand how it can feel like a cold shoulder, though. There is an emptiness to it. Thanks for this video, it was super insightful! ♥️♥️

Absolutely agree with the Wild Unknown deck. One of those cards looks like a butthole. My biggest one is probably the Deviant Moon deck. Everyone raved about it, and I love moon decks. I am hoping I will connect with it in the future so I've kept it.

Terrific video to your series of your decks. To not resonate with a deck is absolutely normal. Not everyone likes the same books, T.V shows, art styles or seasons lol. I also do not resonate with the Shadowscapes, I have tried and tried, it simply hurts my eyes. I love Lisa Hunt's and Paula Cassidy decks and they are very detailed but I can "see" the details. I have never been drawn to the Fountain Tarot or the Silver Era Tarot, not that I can't appreciate why others love them.The WU, I had to color, paint and modify now it does work for me and I really enjoy it. The WU was my first pip deck and now it doesn't look anything like when I purchased it. This spring I was finally able to read with the Ostara, it was for some younger family members and they picked it out and it worked lol. I don't think you were deck bashing at all !! This is why it is such a wonderful time, so many talented, artistic deck creators, something for everyone. ( P.S. I can't read with any traditional RWS decks with Pixie's original art work, I love them, I use them as study decks, I shuffle and play with them, but I can't "read" with them) So hopefully that doesn't make me any enemies :( Please keep creating, sorry about the long comment.

I have the Good Tarot and I know what you mean about not being able to read decks sometimes. I can read the majors very easily and the Hermit card in this deck is one of my favourites ever, but I can't read most of the minors at all. I'm constantly having to check with the guidebook. However, my daughter likes it, so if I read for her, it has to be this deck! When she's old enough to read for herself, I will gift it to her. And yes. It's Santa.

I think the Wild Unknown is an acquired taste. It’s definitely not for everyone nor for everything. For myself, it resonates with shadow work because it forces a different, often foreign, perspective which is frequently helpful when working with the shadow. For that, I appreciate its ‘wildness’ and allow it to speak in its own language. Not for the traditionalist. But then again, I am that too.

Totally with you on the last four!!! I guess that’s why it’s great to have so many different tarot decks out there because we all have different reactions to art... loved this series!!! Love how you categorized your decks!!!

Just discovered your channel and am enjoying it so much! I totally agree with you about the Shadowscapes deck, that's why I never bought it. The artwork is so incredibly beautiful but so so detailed. I knew I would never be able to concentrate on a reading because I'd be wondering what I missed in the image.

I totally agree with you on the "bad artwork" decks. There's one (I can't remember which) that I liked the look of from a distance, but up close the drawings are just kinda amateurish (e.g. the figures' proportions are slightly off) - they remind me of cheap fantasy paperback covers from the 80s. Like fingernails on a chalkboard... The deck I wanted to love but don't is the Legacy of the Divine. When I got back into tarot after many many years away, I had no idea there were so many beautiful modern decks to choose from. Legacy was one of the first I saw, and I was blown away by the bright colours and Renaissance/steampunk vibe - but I've discovered I much prefer a more traditional, "flat" style of illustration, such as Druid Craft or Dark Wood. And while I agree that the Shadowscapes images are in many cases too detailed for easy reading, I love it so much that I'm going to stick with it for a while longer. It does make a nice deck for pulling out a single card to feature on Instagram 😄

I am so glad - I recently brought the Shadowscape Tarot ( I am very new to tarot and this one looked beautiful), but I had the same problem. So hard to read all the artwork, so you end up getting confused and lost in trying to translate it... at least I did. I'm glad i'm not the only one, though I'll be interested to see how you repurpose your deck! Thank-you for these videos, for a newbie like me they have been so helpful!

THANK YOU for saying that about the Ostara video. I haven't completely given up on it yet because I LOVE the art work as well but I just don't *feel* it and it makes me sad! Thank you for that validation! I love your channel too!

First, I just want to re-iterate. This deck collection series has been beautifully crafted! Each vid short enough to enjoy, but packed with all the cartomantic porn we all love so much...yumyumyum! So much to say, but I don't want to take up your brainwaves too much, because I am really looking forward to whatever you produce next! Okay, I am with you, we all have those decks we bought because of the hype, or artwork we already loved, surely the deck will be good, and then it falls flat...I'm sorry to say, you have to turn in your tarot tribe badge and id, the guards will see you out...NOT. You are ONE OF US....and we LOVE YOU. Your opinions are great and even though, I adore TWU, if I met you at a tarot conference...you get a high five, a hug, and would trade with you ANYTIME. Glad you talked about Silver Era, I was on the fence...not anymore. I still think I might do the Polish Shadowscapes if I can find it. I never got into the Fountain Tarot. (and I have traded, Prisma Visions, Deviant Moon, Pagan Otherworlds, OSTARA, Aquarian in a Tin, Circle of Life Tarot, Decadent Dream, and the Moon Oracle! [I got the blue backs and hated them] Yes I did!)

I really want to say thank you for making this series. For a two past week, I've been dreaming about a certain white tarot deck. It's so persistent that I think it was a call from the deck. I've been looking for the deck ever since, but I couldn't find it. But then, your video of your earthy deck collection was recommended to me and I finally found the deck in my dreams--it was the Pagan Otherworlds deck. After finding that, I binge watch this series and begin to understand more about tarot decks and myself (that I'm more suitable with earthy decks and my first and only deck right now is the earthy one also). So thank you so much. Don't ever feel bad about your mounting deck collection, because your collection and videos surely help people. I will binge watch all of your videos now. X))

I have had the Wild Unknown deck on my Wish List, but it keeps shifting down the list as I find decks I prefer to it. Totally agree with you on The Wild Unknown. I actually love the art and wanted to love the deck but I just couldn't make the connection. I do however love the Animal Spirit deck and I'm so curious to see her new one coming out later this year! Thanks for another lovely video :)

Great video so enjoy your content, the same thing happened to me with the Ostara Tarot I was so excited to get it but once I did there was nothing I just got caught up watching everyone else lesson learned, but now it's my daughters she loves it and does a card a day with it. Also, I was not able to connect with the Anna K or The Witches Tarot wanted to but was a no go. Now I am more mindful of the cards I purchase not a fan of just getting cards to just store them away. Now my decks are all workhorses they are used in constant rotation and I love the feel of a well worn loved deck! ;)

I think it's great to talk about decks that you don't resonate with! And yah no one should ever be mad at you for not resonating with stuff! Wild Unknown was a similar experience for me. I was entranced by the fact that everyone was entranced by it and convinced myself I liked it. I didn't. Passed it on (AFTER trimming to see if I could bond with it better). The Fountain is a much beloved deck of mine but I totally get that it's not everyone's cup of tea. :D Ostara I recognized I didn't jive with before a purchase (yay!) and so far the same with the Good Tarot. Though every once in a while I consider picking it up because the artwork is so dreamy and lovely - but whenever I watch a full flip through, I'm reminded of why I haven't bought it yet. So - hopefully I'll stay strong on that front! :) FABULOUS series - thank you so much for taking us along on this journey with you!

This is probably my favourite video of the series. It's just so fascinating to hear other people's experiences with the decks that I've worked with!! 🤍 I totally agree with you on the Fountain Tarot, I had such a hard time connecting with the deck but rather than cold shoulder, it felt more like apathy to me. It reminded me of someone working at a 9-5 desk job that would do the absolute minimum required for the job. So instead I use it as artwork cards for my altars, and the deck seems to be ok with that so win-kinda win. 😄 On the Ostara deck I'll have to disagree with you because I've had such a great experience with it. Its energy was actually very similar to my very first oracle deck Healing with Angels, Just a very warm and gentle feeling, which is probably why I had such a great connection with it. Now on the Wild Unknown, I get it. I personally connected with it right away and it's definitely my current favourite, but I can see how it's not for everyone. The deck that I work with has such an intense personality, sometimes snappy, sometimes upbeat, always straight to the point in an almost passive aggressive kind of way. We bicker like an old couple every single time (Please tell me that other people do this as well 😅) but I think that's exactly what I like about it. It just reminds me of myself and that makes me open up to it more easily than I would with other decks. Again great video, and I would actually love to hear your opinion on more decks that you weren't able to connect with throughout the years and why. 😊👍

Well, that was fun! I just spent a couple days binge-watching my way through your collection videos, and thoroughly enjoyed them all. I'm totally with you on the Ostara (tried to love it but nope) and Fountain (it's beautiful but it won't talk to me, gives me the cold shoulder), and the Wild Unknown (which I have successfully resisted purchasing because the art, though beautiful in its way, is just not for me). Actually I've been enjoying your whole channel and hearing how you work with decks, though I don't think I've commented before. Thank you for all your videos! 💖

If your only issue with the shadowscapes tarot is the size I have good news for you. The Czech version of the deck is a much bigger size, and is available to buy on Amazon. I picked it up and damn I’m so glad I did. I use it so much noe

Loved this video. It's always interesting to see a little deeper into a person's taste and personality by what they don't mesh with. I recently acquired the Fountain and I love it. It does give me the cold shoulder if I pull too many cards, keep it simple and go deep on 1 to 3 is my current way of working with it. I do not own the Wild Unknown but my friend has it and she's let me read with it a couple of times. I think the art is gorgeous but we don't vibe. I really dig the art in El Goliath as well but it doesn't call. I do have Crow Tarot and I really really wanted to love it but the cards are so big that shuffling is a chore and the images make me kind of dizzy. I suppose I have a block for animal themed decks. A deck I was super excited for and haven't really used much was the Vice Versa. I loved the idea of a front and back side with alternate interpretations and symbols however the cards are so glossy that they fly everywhere when I shuffle and I can't unsee the obvious 3D modeling that was done to create the images. They remind me of a fantasy version of the Sims and not in a good way.

The wild unknown.....I was so excited for this deck then I finally got it and nothing. It sat on my “bookcase” for almost a year. Then something just came over me and I tried again. Can’t imagine life without it. The wild unknown and the lumina tarot. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for all your deck collection videos, I enjoyed all of them. I got the Shadowscapes Edition from Europe that is larger and use the app for the English guidebook but still wish the cards were larger! I also don’t connect with the wild unknown or fountain tarot. Thanks again for sharing!

I completely agree with you on the shadowscape tarot, if only the images were bigger! right now the deck i have that i just cant connect with is the tarot of the Sidhe~ i really want to love it 😫

The Good Tarot makes me so angry every time I see it. I don’t mind non-traditional imagery, but it has so throughly messed up the Major Arcana symbolism the deck is worthless. The Lovers should not have a Strength’s lion. The Fool should not be blowing Judgement’s horn. Ugh!

I find decks do have personalities! I know... silly but true for me. I found I had to work for TWU and the Fountain. But sometimes you just need to let go of a deck. 😊love these videos. I wanted and worked hard to get on with the Tarot of Fire but couldn’t. Also the Celtic Tarot just didn’t work even though I moded it!

Wonderful finale to your deck collection series. I'm with you on Shadowscapes: bigger cards, please. Do you have the Shadowscapes app? I found it really helpful for seeing the images enlarged (I noticed SO many new details!) and reading more in-depth descriptions of each card.

I don't know if it's because I'm still fairly new to reading the Tarot, but I do not get on with The Linestrider, The Naked Heart and Shadowscapes. I think i just resonate more, at this point in my practice at least, with decks that are more in line with the traditional RWS. I also rehomed the Good Tarot and the Chakra Wisdom Tarot for very different reasons... the Good Tarot was not giving me enough to divine a clear message, and Chakra Wisdom was giving me too much. Glad I'm not alone in not getting along with every deck in my small collection.

Great show of your whole collection. I've been building up courage to do a similar video on the decks I've bought, can't connect with yet, but still unwilling to give up. Your eloquence here is admirable; I'm afraid I won't be able to articulate myself well here and risk offending fans of the decks ):

I use my fountain Tarot as a monthly card draw. I pull one for each month and there is something about this art that really feels like it can represent an entire month for me. I’m not sure if that makes sense. I do read with it sometimes too, but as a bold statement for the beginning of a new month, I’m loving it. 😊

I've got 3 of these - Akashic, Good tarot & Ostara, and they arent decks I use often either...but do once in a while.

I have the same problem with the Shadowscapes and my sight is ok but I will.love it to be bigger, anyway I love it. And inhale the same problem with the Fountain , but I knew I was not going to love it but I still wanna try 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I was surprised to see Wild Unknown on the list, but once you explained your reasoning, it makes sense why you don't connect with it! If the art isn't your style, it's hard to connect with a deck. Personally, the Wild Unknown's artwork is right up my alley and I adore it. Different strokes. :D

Thank goodness you said it..... for some reason I just never got into shadowscape.... I went to buy it atleast 4 times. Then got to hold one and go through it and couldn’t get into it.

Oh, I see you fell for the "did not research this deck enough (if at all) before buying" syndrome. My sympathies. I fell for that twice: once for The Hobbit Tarot (which I found terrible for me. It's on its way out of my collection) and the Oceanic Tarot (nice but pipped, and again, not for me). I learned hard to research first before getting it, or make sure they have a high enough reputation (i.e. for me, say if Ciro Marchetti or Fabio Listrani make a new deck, I am willing to take a chance sight unseen, otherwise, nope, wait til someone reviews with images). I have the Good Tarot, and I like it, but yea, I have seen that Magician as Santa at times ( lol ). On the Shadowscapes, as others here have commented, do not feel bad on the size. They really should be/could be bigger (and I do not say that just because I am half blind/wear glasses lol). I've seen people here on RU-vid buying some Czech (I think it is Czech, or Eastern European somewhere) edition just because the size is substantially bigger. Otherwise, it is a gorgeous deck. I first got a copy for the Better Half, mostly for the art, and eventually got myself a copy to use and study, and yea, bigger in this case would be better. Also, no need to apologize because "this deck is hot for others" or such. Early on my Tarot journey I learned everyone has diverse tastes, so I fell on the 5 Laws of Librarianship 9by Ranganathan) and from them coined the Rivera Tarot Corollary to Ranganathan, which serves me well and states: "Every deck (Tarot, oracle, whatever) its owner/user/collector, and every owner/user/collector their deck." That way even if I see a deck that I go "holy Chicago, that is hideous," I am comforted by "but it makes them happy, so hey." You can feel free to quote it as needed ;) The Fountain Tarot reminds me a bit, in some cards, of some of Dali's works. Not so much his melting clocks stage but works like "Discovery of America" or his "Last Supper," that style. So it is nice, but not a priority for me to acquire if at all. In my case, it also did not help I got a galley of the guidebook (via NetGalley) but they did not even include a single image of the cards, so the review was strictly on the text, which did not impress me; I am not sure what the creators were thinking not including at least a few images in a PDF or such (I get they may not have wanted to give out review copies of the deck) but just tossing the book with nothing else did them a disservice to reviewers in NG. However, the deck overall is very nice albeit far from perfect for me when compared to others. Wild Unknown I mainly have it because I got it on sale price at HPB and bought multiple copies (the mass market btw), so Better Half got one and our daughter. For me, I knew I might not likely use it (I need more in my images) but I appreciate the art very much, and also it is a "big deal" deck (i.e. as you say, a lot of people like it, have it, live it so to speak) so figured I can give it a chance. I like it a bit but not a fan kind of thing. On the other hand, our daughter loves her copy and reads with it regularly. Heck, she even got the companion oracle the artist/author made and uses it too. So as the old saying goes, different strokes for different folks. Thank you for sharing the video and your thoughts. I totally agree with the size of the cards for the Shadowscapes deck. I find it really difficult to use it because of the exact same reason.

For me it would be the Vice versa tarot and the Mermaid tarot. I still keep them hoping that maybe one day we can connect but years go by and nothing change

I totally agree about the Good Tarot - I just couldn't get into it & gave it away almost right after I purchased it. I am surprised about the Shadowscapes, though! I agree shadowscapes is too small, I also have had trouble with Ostara and Fountain tarot. The Wild Unknown is marmite to people...I think most people will agree with you, but I definitely do much love Gx

Many of these I wouldn't connect either....the akashic tarot... eeek!! I do love the wild unknown and I agree for the shadowscape... but I keep trying working with it! One deck that I wanted so much was Osho Zen Tarot, I remember a friend using it on me many time and I was sure I would love it... Nope! Once I got it... I couldn't get accurate readings with it and it was frustrating! Some card in particular didn't vibe with me, and the guidebook neither...I ended up hating that deck! lol I sold it!

Old video, I know :D but it still baffles me that the Hungarian version of the Shadowscapes tarot is much bigger. But it lacks the pretty lilac border lol (which is ok, I'm gonna trim it eventually and than it'll be the same size as the Light Seer's tarot yey) The fountain tarot is one that I keep looking at because so many people love it, and it feels like a good one for winter, but I get unsure every time (it's not the cheapest either) so not sure :D But I liked the Ostara tarot so now I have to look into that too, oh boy X;D Thank you for this series!

Totally with you with the Shadowscapes deck and the Wild Unknown de her. Thankfully, I paid attention to myself and didn’t buy them. I really wanted to love the Shadowscapes deck but the artwork is both too busy and too small; as you said, the images needed to be larger.

Yes...agreed with your choices. It's important to see in the contrast. I can't get on board with the StarChild and similar muted pastel coloured decks...meh.🙈

I had the same issue with the Akashic Tarot it was so difficult for me to get past. I’m going to search your videos to see if you listed your favorite decks.

🤗🤗Shadowscapes does need to be bigger. And I am also with you on the Ostara and the Wild Unknown and the Fountain. For me it was too hard for me to tell which card was which in the Ostara. The Wild Unknown and Fountain just don’t give me enough. Maybe the images are too...sparse...not enough detail maybe.

The fountain tarot is ok! Its a little geometric-abstract but it takes time to connect

The Wild Unknown is one where I don't think the imagery appeals to me either, although plenty of other people seem to love it. One thing I like about the Tarot community though, is that everyone seems to be perfectly accepting of differences in opinion, and if one deck doesn't work for someone, there are plenty of others out there.

I get absolutely NOTHING when I read with the fountain tarot. I gave it away because it was so gorgeous I felt bad not using it.

Thank you for sharing. For me, The Guardian Angel by Doreen Virtue. I mean every card of that deck. Some cards very bothering me, even though messages is great.

I tried so hard to love the tarot of the hidden realm. I love the artwork. But it didn’t want to communicate with me. Same for the dreams of Gaïa.

I also can't read with the shadowscapes tarot. I tried so hard but its too busy, too many things happening. Beautiful art though.

The Wild Unknown Tarot is like magick in my hands. I can think of a card, cut the deck and it’s there. Maybe because it was the first deck I purchased for myself but I cherish it dearly. 🖤🖤🖤

I loved the images of the Truly Black Tarot but cannot connect to it at all, they are just amazingly beautiful cards but do not work at all for me.

Interesting. I have the Shadowscapes and feel I just need to rehome it. Every time I see the Fountain I think I am supposed to love it and just do not. The Wild Unknown has not appeal for me. And the Ostara is probably not one I would buy just because it does not jump at me and there are so many more I would want.

I've kept the majority of my decks but I had to re-home shadowscapes. It drove me mad that I loved the artwork but it was too small for me to be able to enjoy. Way way way too busy for those tiny frames

I'm New and what I don't kind of resonate with are dark decks.

Wild Unknown and Fountain decks are 2 that were extremely trendy a few years ago and they attracted ppl who don’t need a tarot to have much “spirit” in them. They don’t give anything bc there isn’t much to begin with IMHO. I think the artists are very talented. I even own Kim Krantz’ Animal Speak and it’s so much better. I agree with these decks being a little flat, energy wise, but a lot of young witches can’t take the Haindl or the Toth deck. Baby steps. Lol PS. The Toth deck hates me. It reads negatively every time. I think it just doesn’t want to work with me.

The Akashic tarot is horrible. Worst deck I’ve owned, had it for a year and only touched it 3 times. I was so excited to get it, but the title is very misleading. That deck I’m definitely repurposing. I got the good tarot a couple of weeks ago and it just didn’t do it for me either 😩🤷🏽‍♀️

10 of water in the Good Tarot is a joke and quite frankly, offensive. This is already an altered representation of Buddha and to include that in a tarot deck does not seem tasteful. Have you explored the Wild Unknown animal oracle? Do you have plans to sell decks you do not connect with?

Whats with these cards that we dont connect? The akashic- maybe its with the art. The images are stiff and not moving. So sad... The good tarot- the colors and images are ok but its too watery... The wild unknown- needs a larger inuition??? Some say shadowscape are preety and good.... but visually the images have too much detail. But still preety. Anyway, its with the card reader that he or she knows how to connect...
