I’m sensitive to stuff out of order. Funny also I went into a new dept store for women’s clothes etc. It was all glitzy and mirrors and I felt shaky. I had to😮go😮to😮the😮car. I😮think it was because I buy only from a small second hand thrift store. I do not know what is going on with these smiley faces because im😮not clicking on here.

Minimalism is subjective, we’re all on a spectrum and it’s how you feel not others. I prefer to think of myself as a ‘simplist’ . I’m not totally there yet but every change I make, which makes my life simpler, makes me happy.

Thankyou for normalising feeling overwhelmed doing things like decluttering. As someone with ADHD, I often feel like I’m ‘crazy’ or ‘weird’ for not being able to see a task through and just burning out, but can also hyper focus on things that I find interesting! I think you summed it up perfectly when you said ‘I crave organisation, but find it hard to motivate myself to do it’. I felt so seen ✨ your house looks incredible! Well done for all your hard work 🥰

To declutter one's cupboards etc is such a huge job with decisions to be made as to what to keep, what to purge or donate esp when it comes to clothes. It's no wonder we don't do it as often as we should. But, to see your cupboards organised brings such joy. If you or Alex are coffee drinkers try using a pinch or two of Five spice powder in your coffee. I started doing this over a year ago on a whim and just love it when I want to treat myself.

"A place for everything and everything in it's place." is a saying I grew up with. You're so right about having a system you consistently follow. I used to think that doing something on a regular basis was so boring, but in reality it saves so much time that you actually have a lot more time to go do the interesting stuff. And as a sensitive person myself, I've learned it's no good trying to be like those who are not. You get a lot more out of yourself by being who you are and working with that. And a lot more joy!

My suggestion is to take the doors off and get “blinds” this way you can use any fabric you like and have them as a pull down curtain blind - as if in front of a window - this works so nicely - keeps things hidden and tidy and you can either use a plain fabric or a print

Fab video ~ your declutter is inspiring. I'm cleaning my desk work surface and desktop computer even as I'm watching! It's amazing how many people I know that have a strong feeling of inertia in Jan & Feb of each year (including myself). I think it's something to do with light levels and temperatures. It's important to be patient with yourself, as I think it's a natural semi-hibernation rhythm, when our body 'batteries' are gradually recharging for the year ahead :)

Madeline, you are by far one of the most sustainable and planet conscious people I’ve ever watched. Without being absolutely to the unreasonable extreme. Anyone who says otherwise is just talking trash IMO. Don’t beat yourself up, ever. You do more than anyone I know. So be proud of yourself for all you and Alex do in that regard. It’s far beyond what most of the rest of us do. Definitely more than I do that’s for sure! You are human, you will need or even want to do some things that aren’t 100% sustainable in this current world. It doesn’t take away from everything you do. So please don’t ever let someone’s comments make you think otherwise. It’s just not true. Now, if we could just get these large well known companies to really do their part, that would actually make a massive impact and us little people wouldn’t even have to do most of what we do to help. It wouldn’t even be there for us to do anything with. But, until then.....

Recycling can be a very difficult decision Alex. My dad was the smartest person Ive ever known. He was of the school that people don't realize how much resources are taken up by recycling, so is it suitable? You're right in thinking "I'm wasting gas by going further, or more often". It's a harder than you'd think. Being eco friendly has many factors. We can only do our best : )

Well done! Minimalism is individual. You can be very minimal in some areas and have more things in other areas.. the most important thing is you love and/or use what you have😊. Alphabetical spices.. NO!!! I do my spices like you.. Green leaf spices (basal, parsley, oregano etc) Salts (garlic, onion, Mediterranean etc) Indian spices Chinese and thai spices Hot spices Sweet spices. Fun declutter. I bought spice jars big enough to put the spices in so I don't have half bags of spices with clips everywhere... that used to drive me crazy.

In Canada we have brackets that screw onto the wall, there are large bins that hook on. So if they are mounted above each other that its easy to see what's inside for sorting and you can lift them off and put them out and leave yourself more floor space.

I have a ton of herbs, spices, condiments and whatnots and I’ve beef tinkering with the best way to store them for years now. It needs to be pretty, tidy and easily accessible. The best way I found is a wide but shallow drawer right under the (electric) stovetop. It fits all my spices and herbs it their original glass jar from the store so I don’t need to decant. Love love love it.

I love those spice tins. I have gobs of spices and herbs and honestly, I never decant them because I hide them all in a closed cupboard anyhow and I can’t stomach the idea of constantly refilling jars and then storing the extras on top of that ….. but. Having said that. I, too, have multiples upon multiples and I do have some ginormous containers of the ones I use a lot and it is a pain to get them out of the cupboard every evening. Having them grouped and easily accessible but also nicely contained like that is a fantastic idea. Also, I’m with you on your frustration over the cupboards. You spent a lot of time and hard earned money, and you are the paying customer. You have every right to want it done to your satisfaction. I wouldn’t settle either. It’s your home. Everyone can have their opinions but at the end of the day it doesn’t matter why you want things to be the way you want them. You just want them that way. That’s enough. I hope you find someone who can get it done for you.

I like how honest you are. Zero waste can put so much pressure on people, because what you do is never enough... I think trying to buy stuff more consciously, prefer second hand when possible and recycle / donate is already a big part that a lot of people don't even bother to do. And I especially like the part when you explain that you live with someone else and that you have to compromise! My partner is someone who is very minimalist when I am more a hoarder and both of us had to compromise: he is a bit more flexible about my mess/stuff but on the other hand, I always try to do my best to keep the surfaces empty (I have a tendency to leave stuff on every flat surfaces 😅). But at the same time, when I reach a point where I have too much stuff, it start creating anxiety. I feel that my kitchen cupboard could use a good decluter but I am stressed in advance because organizing and cleaning take me sooooo long (don't know why) and is very hard mentally, but I know when it's done that I feel relieved and lighter. One of the best deciliter I ever done was before moving places. It felt so good to get rid of all those things you don't use anymore. It can use a lot of your time to sell and donate but when the moving day comes, you have less stuff to carry and organise.

Please don't feel bad for being overwhelmed by things or use the phrasing just maybe I'm crazy. For one you're feelings are completely valid and normal and 2nd it's so frustrating that we as women are so quick to use the term crazy for any feelings we have that aren't calm or complacent. For centuries we've been called crazy for being intelligent, if we have big feelings we're crazy, if we are outspoken or upset we're being a bit too much. Not at all trying to talk negatively to you just wanting to remind you that all that bullshit women have dealt with can have such an undermining effect on us and we don't even know it most of the time cuz it's so normalized.
