Simple Living
Decluttering is part of simple living for me. Living with less stuff makes life simpler in our house. However, simple living does not mean easy living. Simple living is about uncomplicating parts of your life. By decluttering, choosing your enough, and focusing intentionally on what matters most to you, a life of slow and simple living is possible.
Slow Living
A slow living lifestyle is sometimes perceived as an antidote to the effects of that fast paced life. Slow living is about balancing the things you want to do WITH the speed of life. Slowing down and embracing slow living is not about getting the same amount of things done at a slower pace. Rather, slow and simple living is about finding balance and living better in our fast paced world.

A “to go bag” separate from your purse is an excellent idea. Things that could go in it might include activities for the kids, snacks, the first aid pouch, a couple hair ties and the phone charger. There is nothing worse than being somewhere and having low battery on the phone. Your purse would be lighter, and the kids could carry the to-go bag. I like the purse you have, it’s big enough for your calendar and tablet, making it lighter might be all you need.

Mom of 3 kiddos here and understanding the need to have activities on hand for siblings. We created “activity bags” for our kids. I got 10”x9” zippered, canvas bags from Hobby Lobby and labeled them each with a child’s name. I let the kids pick out things to fill their bags with. My artist put in some markers, a small note pad, and matchbox cars/figurines. My reader tossed in a joke book, a few matchbox cars, and left room for whatever novel he’s reading. My youngest put in some Happy Meal dolls (ones we wouldn’t care if we lost), some paper/stickers, and a small magnet doll dress up kit. On our way out the door, my kids are tasked with grabbing their activity bags. We swap out the toys once or twice a year if they’d like something new. It’s been working out great!

This reminds me of a younger me when we were out and about and my husband or kids would say hey mom put this in your purse. I carried the load for everyone 😂. I finally wised up and have a small car bag and bin and now carry a small purse with only things I myself benefit from daily. I refuse to put garbage, snacks or anything other than my own personal needs. I also FORCE myself to go through it once a week. It’s like a simple pleasure to have my own personal space nice and tidy. From a mom who totally gets the messy purse dilemma 😂

I got wise like you too. After chugging a humonguous beach bag with everything for me and my two kids (with two big beach towels, a box of fruits, sandwiches, a bottle of water, clothes to change...) my shoulder had painful indents. Now each kid has their own small backpack, where they carry each their own towel, sandwich, water bottle, tissues and whatever they need. I refuse to take my hubby's swimsuit and towel and keys, because it adds weight on my purse, and he's capable of carrying it in his small backpack too. When I take my kids to doctor's appointment, or a hike in the woods, they would each carry their stuff on their own backs. It can be applied to kids from three year old upward.

Have you thought of having separate bags for some things? When my daughters were little, we used lunch bags (from their prior school year) to keep little toys and snacks in our cars. When the snack bag was empty, then we would take it in the house and refill it. That way we always had snacks and toys with us no matter where we went but I didn’t have to carry them in my purse. We also keep a box of tissues in the cars for the same reason. Doing that allowed me to downsize to a wallet sized crossbody bag. For calendar and work stuff, I kept a separate tote bag since I need to carry that stuff with me all the time (such as grocery shopping). I felt so much freer after having done that. It took a little while to get used to but I still use that size bag even 15+ years later.

I am in the diaper bag phase of life, and I have smaller lightweight bags that separate categorizes inside my bag. One for mom things (tampons, hair ties, a pen, chapstick, etc), one for snacks, one for little activities and toys to keep the kids busy, so on and so forth. Keeps things from getting too crazy in the purse and makes things easier to find.

I've learnt to buy lighter purses (as opposed to smaller purses). That tote of yours looks super heavy in itself. I've had the same lightweight leather purse close to a decade that I use daily. It doesn't have to be super heavy leather to be resilient. Sending you lots of love ❤😊

Oh boundary "rule" in action! Like a fish that grows to the size of a fish tank... my stuff fills a big bag. That's something to think about. I am thinking more and more that I need a better organization system in the car to account for the things I'm lugging around...

I used to joke that I could go away for a weekend with only my purse. I really did view it as my survival bag and was prepared for all types of contingencies. But it was complicated when I needed certain things for work and different things for family outings. So I separated my things (still kept the bandaids and meds) from the keep the kids happy items. I made a "busy bag" that they could grab and go. It has adapted over the years from coloring books and fish crackers to sudoku and airpods and the snacks have changed, but the busy bag still goes with us. In the beginning I had to keep them from overloading the bag with too many books or snacks, but now it's something they put together and maintain. I keep a good supply of paper, colored pencils and snacks, but if they want Uno or Mad Libs, it's up to them. Works for everything from waiting rooms to vacations. :) They are teens now and still grab the busy bag on the way to the car.

After having 3 kids, I came up with a plan for myself. Each car has a big first aid kid, with anything you might need. I have a "restaurant" bag that has floss, wisps, breath mints, straws, hand sanitizer, etc. I also have a small pouch in the consoles with hair ties, nail clippers, phone charger, a small first and kit (with band aids), etc within reach. I have a pouch that has 1 pen, a few band aids, small wallet with gift cards/insurance cards, a hair tie, lip stuff, and this can go between any bag I carry. When the kids were smaller I had a basket in the back of the van that had "quick grabs." That was for small toys, extra clothes, "just in case" things to keep kids occupied, and seasonal things. With this being said, I should say that I only carry my phone, and the case only has 2 card holders; ID, and card. This may seems over the top, but I always knew if I needed something, I had it. That's one of my biggest fears. Not having what I need, when I need it.

I had the same thoughts about the go-bag for the kid's stuff. I'm a single woman with no kids and I carry a large bag. I have had large bags since highschool. I've always wanted to be a tiny purse woman but I "need" a lot of stuff. Thank you for not being ashamed to just dump your bag. I can so relate to the bra in the bag. I like to carry my phone at work to record my steps. Use a small cross body purse when I don’t have pockets. Reduced my “wallet” to a small case for cards, some paper cash (who used cash these days? LOL), keys go in hand, but I do have a big bag I carry to the office for my book, ipad, lunch/snack items. Try to keep things to a minimum. Also found a very small hand sanitizer container. Still need to make sure to empty out the big bag weekly. Great video Erica!
@goofygirl1311
@goofygirl1311 9 месяцев назад
All of my purses, no matter the size, wound up hauling around a bunch of clutter. There were times when my purse would literally make my shoulder sore, it got that heavy. I now wear a small crossbody purse that is nothing more than a wallet. It holds money, cards, it has a place for my phone but I carry my phone in my pocket and use that space for a pen. I can't shove anything into it because there is no room for it. If I need to I could put a few band-aids in the cash compartment along with a small baggie of tums, breath mints or whatever. At any rate, I've been using this system for years and have not missed having a big purse at all.

I recently started carrying a small purse inside my big purse! That way, i leave house with everything i need, but can leave the big one in the car, and just take the small purse into stores, etc. Much easier on the shoulders, and more freedom to dig for those thrifting deals! 😅
@ChristianAnneSmith
@ChristianAnneSmith 9 месяцев назад
I do that sometimes too! I have a fanny pack like thing called the venture wallet from Sipsey Wilder and you can kind of wear it as a cross body thing or a fanny pack. It’s tiny and I took it inside my big purr sometimes if I don’t feel like carrying my purse. Then I just keep my cash/ card phone and keys in it. And hide my purse under a blanket in the trunk. It feels like such freedom, especially if I’m meeting somebody for a walk.

I wonder if you could keep just a Band-Aid and a tampon in your purse and keep the rest of the first aid go kit in your car? That worked for me with my son. I absolutely love that your mom made the bag and keep it in though, and I can see why you might want to keep that with you . I keep a little Ziploc bag that has Advil, a tampon, a mask, earplugs in my purse . I put it in a zippered tiny pocket of the purse, along with a pen, a lipstick, and some gum. The only thing left in the main area of my larger purse is my wallet, which I keep a Band-Aid in and my car keys. By keeping the main area, mostly empty, it’s super easy to just dump my whole purse out before I hang it up. The stuff in the zippered pocket doesn’t dump out. Then I toss my wallet back into the purse, hang my car keys on a hook and hang up my purse. Usually what’s left on the table is three or four pieces of garbage or receipts, and I just deal with them right away . Took me a long time and a lot of experimenting but it works well for me . I keep a lot of things that you’re keeping in your purse in my car and find that it usually is pretty easy to access those still. One of my main motivations was that my doctor said the weight of my purse was giving me neck and back issues. So I made a change. I also decided to go with a canvas purse that is crossbody with a zippered top. The purse itself is significantly lighter than leather purses. Loved this video and learning how you do things.❤

Well done on cleaning out your bag, Erica. I fully appreciate your need to carry so much stuff around, especially when you have three children. It was a great decision to off load some into the separate car bag. Personally, I found when I was in peri-menopause I had to carry far more stuff around too (hand fan, tissues, tweezers, headache tablets, cooling gel, extra moisturiser, tiny towel etc). I am now back to carrying quite a small bag again thankfully.

I usually like to have a bag with at least 3 areas for organization: One is "Tools", one is health and safety, and lastly financial. Then I had to add my supplies for my colostomy bag. So, now I am using a backpack with small zippered pouches for my tools (manicure set, comb with hair ties around it, and other things), health and safety (medication, cough drops, mask, hanky, etc.) and finances (as you can guess. The last bag had all I need for the bag cleaning and changing as well as an emergency outfit if needed. It's amazing what you can carry when you are organized.

As for the purse, I used a backpack while my kid was young and we were homeschooling. At about 10 he started bringing a backpack everywhere we went and I switched to a smaller crossbody backpack by kavu. Maybe not your style though it has been great on my back 😊

I think maybe the leather purse its self is the source of the weight problem. It looks like a really nice purse though!... also maybe a smaller notebook could help.

Purse organizer insert would do wonders for you. Can even just pull it out and into another purse! I remember my mom years ago dumping a huge pile of change out every couple months from her purse. Man, I don’t know how she lugged around all that heavy change everywhere 🤣🤦‍♀️

In 2012 I bought an adjustable purse organizer before they were actually a thing. It was very expensive then $30 but I still use it every single day now they are 15 to 20 and totally worth it.

Love it when the universe says it's not a day to play with the scale 🎉😂 I remember those large purse days and messed up my shoulder after years of too much weight. Switched to backpack when still hauling around kid stuff and my body thanked me. Now can enjoy small stylish bags, finally, and you'll get there again so good luck on your solutions!

Hey Erica, how about a lighter bag? The leather one is beautiful, but with your aesthetic sense, I'll bet you can find a great cloth or nylon one.

Was laughing while you came on your own to the solution of the "toys in the car" my brain was " shouting" 😂 Bag...,yes, the leather looks heavy even empty, maybe find a better suitable bag to ease the load? Nice clean up. Its amazing what collects in a short time.

My oldest (13) carries a cross body little rucksack which has his epipen and drinks bottle in as minimum. So now i dont need to carry them. Toys would be in bag or similar grabbed from car or the understairs cupboard to go into the car as we go out.

I do 2 things. I have a small “go bag” in the console, up front. Things I may need while driving. I have a lidded box in the trunk for items I may need/want on any given trip. It includes a collapsible dog dish and a bottle of water that I change out monthly, as well as tissues and a roll of paper towels. Things like that. Keeping the “to go” bag in your car will definitely lighten your bag

I use to make a goodie bag for my daughter that had toys, coloring book and crayons and snacks plus a change of clothes when she was little. I kept on a hook on the front door.

As a journal/notebook lover the thing that stood out to me was the size of your notebook and calendar. I also prefer a month-in-view style calendar page so that there's room to write appointments on it and I've found that the smallest workable size for me is A5. Regular diary/planner type books just don't work for me. I don't like the way they're set out. Too many pages of things I don't need. It looks like you're the same, just needing the calendar and note pages. I used to have a folder type thing and I just bought the bits I used, to fill it, but the ringbinder type rings annoyed me when I was writing. These last couple of years, I've been buying an A5 sized notebook with the grid paper inside and each year I draw my own calendar in the front of the book and go from there. Amazon now has stencils for bullet journals that make marking up the calendar pages much simpler and faster. Yay! The good thing about these books is that the pages are all numbered so I can mark in a contents page and easily find things later. Lately though, I've been attracted to those leather bound travel journals where you can add in different types of notebooks and leave out what you don't need. They seem quite tall and narrow though so I'm not sure they have the writing space that I get in a regular A5 notebook. I think you may have had one of these leather journals at some point? It obviously didn't work out for you either. They do look nice though, sigh 😄

Hi Erica! Love and watch all of your videos! Putting the kids’ games and socks in the car and only carrying them when you need them is what I was going to suggest. I would also try to find a tote bag ( maybe Vera Bradley type) that is made of material which will be much lighter than your gorgeous leather tote. Vera Bradley totes can be a little pricey but they wear like iron and most can be washed. Good luck! If you find a new bag, please show it to us. 💕
