Hey Tia, I am Bill. By trade I am a carpenter. I have done several remodels on houses like that in my area. I wish I was close enough to help you. I hope you don't mind if I offer some advice. I know you have a plan and I am sure your family (dad and grandpa) is going to help and have suggestions for you to do things. I think if you start in the basement first and work on that it would be best. Move everything out if you can. Check all the walls for dampness and mold. Where the cracks are look down the wall and make sure the foundation is not bulging in and still straight up and down then sealing the cracks with a Hydraulic cement or a high strength mortar would be best. If you have mold, get a mold cleaner and scrub the areas with mold, place a fan down there to dry out the basement after cleaning. After sealing the cracks, brush the walls off and clean up all the dust. Coat the walls and floor with a waterproofing paint or sealer before they install the furnace. Easier to do than after the furnace is installed. A dry basement is a blessing. Sure you may still have to use a dehumidifier but it will not have to run as much if you seal the walls and floor and any cracks. Next fix the roof. Those two things are the most important, so do them first. I have more advice if you like. Just trying to help. Take care.

I'm an old lady but my Dad was a carpenter and I've lived in several different places and you are correct. Make sure the foundation and roof is dry and solid. Moisture can ruin a great house.

You are a generous guy offering g your experience with these older homes. I hope she will heed your advice. The foundation is paramount to the life of this sweet home. The roof is also connected to the basement with water issues and more.

Excellent suggestion! After the decluttering the basement and roof should be next. A working heat source is important so you can continue to work inside during the winter months...

The house is looking better every day! That stuff on the hardwood is just carpet glue, it’ll come off with a floor sander. Get a pro to come look at the foundation cracking, just putting a glob of concrete in there won’t be enough if it’s a serious issue.

Your foundation is extremely important, I think you should have the cracks in the walls repaired from the outside and either coat them or use the proper sheeting to waterproof the walls and make sure you have weeping tile, you will not regret doing this properly for many years to come.

Maybe you should consider making the front bedroom your studio and the bedroom next to the bathroom should be your bedroom for the convenience of being next to the bathroom. This way you won't have to walk through the entire house if you need to use the bathroom at night.

Best thing i ever did was put my furnace on a concrete block platform. I built a wood frame around the blocks so they never move. Three weeks after the furnace was installed the basement flooded when the sump pump quit but my new furnace was high and dry. Try the wet towel trick on the patches on the floor, that looks like it could be horse glue.

Kid.... I know your Father is proud of you... I know this I'm a Dad too!! I'm proud of you and I don't even know you!!! The black under the carpet is either adhesive or part of the old padding BUT I know as a contractor I've also seen people use tar paper on old floors before putting in new flooring...not sure why but I believe you have no worries. Keep up the great work and keep the update videos coming!!!!!
@kibblenbits
@kibblenbits 18 дней назад
I'm in my 70's, and they used to put down tar paper, since it helped keep old time linoleum, which was far less flexable than today's vinyl sheeting, from cracking, because of seams in the wood underneath. They also used layer's of newspaper under the linoleum, for the same purpose, when they didn't want to spend extra money on tar paper, or couldn't afford it. My family went with the newspaper method back in the day.

That house is LOADED with treasures! I could name so many but I'll just say if that electric frying pan works, KEEP IT! They make the best meals. Plus you don't have to waste propane cooking nor turn on the oven on hot days. I've had several over the yrs. and love it. I live alone and don't have a stove. I rent and needed the 220 for a dryer so landlord took stove out. I use electric fry pan, toaster oven, crock pots and a Corning Ware electric hot plate. My daughter does the big holiday and birthday gatherings. You worked hard this past week getting all that stuff out. Impressive! And those hardwood floors. siiiiiigh.... ❤

To remove the black adhesive from carpet or lineloem I use Goop hand cleaner. It’s safe, just put one with paintbrush let sit for 1 hr. and gently use clean putty scraper to see if it’s softened enough. It can be bought in Walmart etc. I am working on removing backing on my kitchen linoleum so I can sand the original oak flooring. I am the 78 yr. woman in Fla. that’s rehabbing my house. Love your videos. You’re doing great!

I was thinking the same thing. Also since she wants to use her spare bedroom as an art studio, the front room will get lots of natural light by having windows on two walls! The large closet is also in between the two rooms so it'd be really easy to switch the closet to open into the other room instead of the front room. Hope all of that made sense!

Great progress! I like that you decided to keep the 2nd bedroom and expand the bathroom. That may save you some some and money with not having to move plumbing and fixtures. I have a suggestion for those basement stairs. You'd do yourself a favor if you place some wood on those missing steps. Watching you go down them with the camera is scary. One bad placement of a foot and you could really hurt yourself. And as a carpenter, I know how tiring it can be going up and down stairs while working on a project. A few 1x8 or 2x8 screwed to the missing stairs would be a lot safer and comfortable. And less exhausting. If you plan on refinishing the floor in the bedroom by sanding and re staining the stuff on the floors shouldn't be a big problem. Keep up the good work! Its a slow process, but you'll get there!

Have water drain away from the house and not stand by the foundation... your basement wall will quit moving inward. A foundation wall is still structurally sound as long as it doesn't move inward more than half it's width (thickness). Again, keep exterior water away from house... will keep basement drier and walls from moving. GOOD LUCK... YOUR DOING GREAT!!!

I am so glad you got 3 quotes from other electricians and picked one you like. BUT any electrician can't just say they are going to PUT IN electricity. YOU HAVE TO TAKE OUT ALL THE OLD ELECTRIC LINES FIRST AND THE OLD POWER BOXES. In order to take all of that out you first have to tear down the wall to get to all the old electric lines. DEMO FIRST THEN PUT NEW THINGS IN. Then the electrician you hired can start to put in all new electric Power boxes and electric lines, new socket outlets, new light switches, etc....This will not all happen in just 1 week!

When i come across a video like this and seeing a young adult putting in the time and effort to build something. It gives me a little more hope that our world isn't totally on fire. Good for you young lady and i hope it all works out!
