The Rose Royce moog sample is actually scratched, not pitch shiftet.

As a teen in the 80s, we were blessed with such amazing, groundbreaking music! B Boys blew my mind then and still do! Saw them in 98 and 09. Miss them so much. Absolute icons and legends. RIP MCA🙌❤

Great video/reconstruction, BUT pretty sure the Rose Royce bass part in the chorus sounds the way it does because it was "cut up" by a dj (maybe Hurricane) playing the actual Rose Royce record and using the crossfader. Your version is very close but has some added parts/notes in it.
@KarlBoltzmann
@KarlBoltzmann 7 месяцев назад
Thanks! And yes, you're absolutely right. The method that I showed in the video is more of a crude imitation to create a similar sound, but it's nothing like what they would have done to create that bass.

While the Beasties deserve their props, Shake Your Rump was already a Dust Brothers instrumental track before the Beastie Boys collaboration started. The Dust Brothers had about half of the Paul's Boutique backing tracks already in the can before they met the Beasties. They were planning on releasing them as instrumental dance / club tracks, then the Beastie Boys heard their work and wanted to rhyme over them instead... the rest is history.

The Dust Brothers, who produced this album, were way ahead of their time by making this whole album with samples. So well implemented too. It almost sounds like a very creative band could have recorded the pieces.

there really are a lot of vibrant lp's driving this track and it was pretty interesting to see how the beat concoctions, like a couple of drum samples from different songs, came together in the end. cool video as always

It’s the way that they make multiple drum samples on one track sound cohesive. I love it in 3‐Minute Rule where it goes back and forth between the hard hitting drums and the Sly Stone drums. 👍 great video

There is a wonderful character in the lack of refinement on Paul's Boutique and the sampling that is almost impossible to manufacture these days on modern DAWs. It really is a piece of history that can't ever be replicated.

Another gem! I always thought someone was cutting up the first Car Wash sample and not pitch shifting it in pieces. 🤯 Do you know if the "ho's ho's" they chant at the end is actually The Beasties themselves?

If I ever get to chat with the Dust Brothers about it, I will find out for sure, but my I am almost certain that the shouts at the end would have been recorded by them at the studio.

Yes, great point! Someone else pointed out that they likely scratched the pitch shifting, which would make more sense given the technology available at the time.

7:26 - What do you think about Heatwave's "The Groove Line" or the the Michael Zager Band's "Let’s All Chant" as the source for the Disco Call? Also consider Tededy Pendergrass's "Get Up, Get Down, Get Funky, Get Loose."
@KarlBoltzmann
@KarlBoltzmann 9 месяцев назад
Great comment. After checking them all out, the closest to my ear is "Let's All Chant", but when I took a closer look, it doesn't match up. The main difference, as far as I can tell, is that the disco call in Shake Your Rump is a single voice, where as all of these are done by at least a few vocalists. If I ever get to talk to the Dust Brothers, I will solve this mystery, but in the meantime, my best guess is that it was one of the BB recording their own disco call in the studio.

@KarlBoltzmann
@KarlBoltzmann Год назад
I can honestly say that I never realized how common the disco call was. This is a great example and a good find! I still stand by the side by side comparison showing that Shake Your Rump is a single person making the disco call, where as Let's All Chant sounds like a group of people. I could be wrong, but that's what I hear.
