Relatively early in her career, an interviewer asked Miss Streisand why, at the end of a song, she very often holds the final note for so long. She replied, “Because I can.”
If she wasn't so astonishingly fabulous, I'd make Patti stand in holy water and sing that. It's unnatural that she is AS GOOD AS EVER. Ladies and gentlemen - God given fabulousness.
I am an OLD fan of Barbra and it strikes me that your explanation of the not-breathing moments is REALLY IMPORTANT. I now think what you are pointing out is close to the essence of what makes Barbra totally unique and totally original as a singer. I doubt that anyone else could sing the way she did in these numbers. And now I know just how critical is breath control and specifically NOT breathing at certain transitions. Thank you, Seth! This is brilliant.
Love your vids Seth!!! They seriously make my day :-) btw in before the parade passes by, Barbra holds the last note for about 13 seconds there too!! awesome
No one, but no one, has ever sung With One Look like Patti Lupone. It's as if the song was written for her. When he first wrote it, ALW said it needs a combination of Liza Minnelli, Kiri TeKanewa and Sarah Brightman = Patti.
Amazing, all of them!! I have to add one that takes MY breath away every time...Liza at the very end of 'Maybe this Time'/Cabaret. She doesn't take a breath in between the big finish before "win". Nobody does it like her!!!
Stephanie Kane Evidently takes after her mother in that respect. The "show-stopper" segment at the end of Judy's show in the 60's always ended with a phenomenal note. Have you seen Judy sing "Hey Look Me Over" - She just doesn't breathe during the chorus.
Seth, please deconstruct Babs in Yentl. It's one of my most favorite scores and it's sung by the greatest singer ever. I want you to obsess over it like I do. =)
Can we just talk about Eden in this weird little production of Joseph? 2:22, she just holds the C and keeps going, never breathes and goes for the G. How!? Perfection. Eden Espinosa - A Pharaoh Story
Totally agree! Rebecca Luker is flawless in that song, and the rest of the show too for that matter. For example the song 'How Could I Know'?? Ahmaazing!! Gets me every single time. Extremely underrated score as far as I'm concerned. Both Rebecca Luker and Mandy Patinkin are superb.
I know you've only deconstructed one pop song. But you should deconstruct sia's live performance of chandelier on Ellen the belted Es and Fs along with the gorgeous cracks you should check it out!
Lupone - that’s a song she owns … but I still feel Barbra “stole it “ and just made it magical , especially on the end You should compare the 2 versions Just saying Great video You and your partner are terrific on the video collaboratives
Patti’s last note of ME suffers from not breathing. Both in the recording and the live version. Don’t hate me, I saw her do sunset on the west end during the whole drama about Glenn close doing it on broadway and Barbra singing The songs from sunset first
