Decorative Ash Bowl

Well, after the near miss with my mutant starfish fossil bowl, here's a coloured and textured ash bowl. It nearly gets finished, too! However, a split in the rim is a bit of a nuisance and I didn't bother finishing the foot off, but as a demonstration of a technique I hope it has some merit...feel free to subscribe, comment and share!
Please be aware that woodturning is a hazardous activity. These videos are only intended to show you what I do - they are not tutorials.
Since I started making these videos in 2017, I have been lucky enough to receive the support of some manufacturers with materials to use in my videos. Since May 2018, Chestnut Products have provided me with stains, an iridescent paints sample set, lacquers and waxes. I'd like to thank them for their kind and generous support. Martin Saban-Smith has provided me with a sample set of Intrinisic Colours. All other products and tools, unless where indicated, have been bought from suppliers at retail prices. Products mentioned in my videos are for information purposes so that viewers know what I have used.

Ive never added color to any of my pieces so I enjoy watching what you create. I must admit, I often think you have too much color UNTIL you show the close up pictures and wow I am always surprised at how all of the different colors and multiple layers bring out the beauty in each piece. Thanks! and have a great day.

Love, love, love it, beautiful texture, the colours are vibrant and the shine is amazing. Now you have evolved, from texturing the outside rim of a bowl to the side rim. I hope you do more on the side. The shape was pleasant too. Just great!!!

Hello Stewart, It looks really good. If there is a but, mine would be, "But Y O Y O Y O Y didn't you finish it? " It feels like an itch that won't go away; an unfinished melody ; that gnawing, "What if?" . The surface on the outside looks like a ceramic glaze. This could be the one, (probably not), where you carry the colour over and inside, rather like a Victorian jardiniere bowl, because it's an experiment. . . like. I have a weakness for golds that transition through oranges and deep reds, to burnt red/umber. Go on Stewart, don't leave it there. Regards, Glenn. :-)
@stewartfurini
@stewartfurini 5 лет назад
Thanks, Glenn - your eloquent plea has made me determined to finish it off - just a bit of tidying up of the inside to get a smooth curve and then sorting out the foot. I'll ignore the split....I'm sure more like this will emerge from my workshop over the next few weeks. Cheers!

Hey, Stewart, I really enjoy the effects you're applying to your turnings. I'm wondering why you've never (at least not that I've seen...) attempted airbrushing effects?
@stewartfurini

Thanks, Marty! I've done a few airbrushing videos in the videos I've uploaded using stencils and templates. My last bit one video featured a lot of masking with airbrushing. I've not used a lot of paint in airbrushes...most of them use spirit stains instead. Cheers!

@ApexWoodworks

I was wondering if you've ever tried to seal the wood prior to applying stains, which would keep them from blotching so much? I'm talking of either shellac or a sander/sealer to seal it. Thoughts?
@stewartfurini
@stewartfurini 5 лет назад
Hi Marty - yep, I have tried that in the past. It does seem to give a different effect to the stain with less of it soaking into the wood. But after building up a few coats, the shellac in the Chestnut stains acts like a sealer anyway.

Really like this! What grind do you use for clearing out the innards? I don't get much ash here New England. I want to try some. You generally turn what kind of wood? I think I broke the amount of questions law. Have I? Huh? :)
@stewartfurini
@stewartfurini Год назад
Hi Michael - glad you like this one...and because you do, I can overlook the breaking of the amount of questions law! I use a grind about 55-50 degrees which coped well with the size of this hollowing. I mostly use beech and sycamore - I prefer this for colouring as it's tight-grained as opposed to ash which is more open grained, though this particular piece was less so than normal. I find that when the grain is more pronounced it fights against the patterns I make with some colouring techniques. However, the colouring approach on this bowl works ok with more open grains. Cheers!
