My first foray into piercing - and lots of hand sanding! A black and gold pierced textured platter rim in beech.
Please be aware that woodturning is a hazardous activity. These videos are only intended to show you what I do - they are not tutorials.

It looks very nice. I have thought recently about drilling holes in a bowl but the prospect of sanding the holes, for many days or weeks, has put me off!!! Thanks for a great video. James
@stewartfurini
@stewartfurini 6 лет назад
Hi James - it was all done in less than a day! However, even that amount of sanding is rather tedious. If I were to do more of these, I'd definitely find a mechanically assisted way to sand!! Cheers.

Stewart Furini . I understand that the professionals, who do piercing all the time, use dentist's drills. I personally do not think piercing, with a dentist's drill would bring back encouraging memories. Thanks James

Another beautiful platter/bowl. You are very talented! I'd have kept the back sprayed/stained, as I think it adds to the integrity of the piece that way. Just my opinion, others are available! Lovely, patient work, well done ;-) K from Kent

That's a lot of sanding! I barely have the patience to sand a plain bowl, never mind all that malarky. lol Another beautiful piece Stewart and a true labour of love I reckon too. Do your family remember what you look like? You must have spent most of the week sanding and painting that platter! As for last weeks piece ............ step away from the drill! XD

lovely piece. not keep on the back. I think you should do the same to the back as you did to the front with the texturing and colour and leave the middle wood like the front
@stewartfurini
@stewartfurini 6 лет назад
I certainly think the back should have either colour or no evidence of colour. The places on the back where the colour has remained look messy. I'm pretty sure the back will end up black like the front! Cheers!

Well... now, where do I even begin? when you started drilling holes in this one, I wasn't quite sure if I was going to like it. But, by the end, I loved it! The blue did help tone it down just a touch and I really agreed with you on that. Now, how are you going to finish it? 💜

Great piece Stuart - I love your work, and getting a compliment from my friend Annikas is high praise indeed! I want to purchase my 1st airbrush - do you have any recommendations regarding brand, or anything else I should look for. I have never painted anything on or from my lathe, any tips or suggestions you may have will be much appreciated. Regards Dennis Beamish Cambridge Ontario Canada
@stewartfurini
@stewartfurini 6 лет назад
Thanks, Dennis. I started with a cheap one with a very thin airhose as I already had a compressor. This was a false economy. However, as I'm not doing precision aribrush work, I've stayed quite cheap and have bought airbrushes from Amazon for around £15-£20. I have also bought a small compressor and airbrush set that works perfectly for this small scale work that I do. Here's a link to the video I made about this - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y-d0H4rvNj4.html Others might give you different advice and recommend more expensive airbrushes but I've got good results with these ones. Hope this helps!

Thanks, Roger - I guess I'd better do something different this weekend, then...I was thinking of doing something like the technique Tim does in the video you give the link for!
