In this video, I make a decorative wood box with splines. This simple diy woodworking project makes a great gift. I'm surprised I've not made a box like this until now. The simple construction makes this decorative wood box a really unique gift.

I have recently retired and I am building boxes. This was a great video with excellent workmanship. Thank you for some good ideas. I use the tape method for gluing as well but I sand my inside of the box before I put the tape down and use my compressed air to get the dust off before I tape. Makes the tape stick better with no dust on it. Certainly not a pro but just it makes it better to stick. Sure like your video and have subscribed. Thank you and greetings from Ladysmith, BC Canada

Cool box! If it were me I would have used a hammer to be sure the miter joint splines are in as far as they can go. Also it helps to have a straight edge across the top edges when taping the miter joints for glueing.

I was looking for some ideas for making a box and your video really sparked some great ones. I will be making mine out of Purple Heart with Leopard wood insert on the top and all sides. I am planning to use my table saw to make a chamfer on the top and underside of the lid. With an overhang all the way around, it will act as a opening limit when I add hinges. Very good! Elegant in its simplicity. I did something like that many years ago out of a redbud tree my neighbor lady had me cut down. A year later I gave her a box like that and she was floored when I told her where the wood came from. I like the simplicity of yours and I think the look is right for a gift I want to make for a retiring coworker. One thing I would avoid is the way you glued the bottom on. Cross grain glued joints are liable to split the bottom due to changes in humidity. A floating bottom with a small amount of glue at the centerlines would be better.
@BruceAUlrich
@BruceAUlrich 5 лет назад
Yeah, I thought about that with the bottom. I don’t think it’ll be an issue with how narrow the piece for the bottom is paired with the reinforced splines in the miters. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Appreciate the input!

Since you re-sawed the wood, did you do a continuous grain match around all 4 sides? I think David Picciuto did a video on that a while back if memory serves me correctly. That box came out super nice, I love the character in the top and the coloring of the wood you used in the sides. Well done sir! It's been so long since I've done a video, I feel like I'm going to have to start all over on my channel! Talk about being out of practice! You did great!
@BruceAUlrich
@BruceAUlrich 5 лет назад
Thanks, Nick! Appreciate the kind words! I didn't do a perfect continuous grain around the sides. I realized it afterwards, and should have used my miter saw to accomplish this. Oh well, I was still able to match the grain pretty well on the sides. You can't really tell. The variance between the sapwood and heartwood was so vast, it helped hide that kind of thing. Thanks for watching!

When you cut the kerfs did you use a regular blade with offset alternating teeth? If so how do you eliminate the "cat'sears"? I make my boxes pretty much the same as you but I prefinish the inside with wipe on poly which also helps with any glue squeeze out.
@BruceAUlrich
@BruceAUlrich 3 года назад
Yes, I used an alternating tooth blade. I just kind of made it work with some wood dust as filler. I probably should have used a straight tooth grind for that issue, but it worked out ok. That's a great idea with pre-finishing! I'll have to do that next time!

The finished project looks great. My only critique would be that the bottom is too thick. Given that the top overhangs the box, it might have looked better to actually recess the bottom into a rabbet. But I'm sure the recipient won't even notice. Keep building!
@BruceAUlrich
@BruceAUlrich 5 лет назад
You know, you’re totally right. I had the same thought about the bottom, since the part of the top that shows is not that thick. I actually thought I would chamfer the bottom more than I did. I guess I need to make another one. ;) I have the other side that I split off of this one. I’ll make the bottom thinner on that one and compare. Thanks for watching!
@cspann831
@cspann831 5 лет назад
The bottom does look a little "unique" I cant recall seeing a decorative box with the bottom flush cut. More commonly I've seen with a bottom that thick is a plinth-like base where it extends out from the sides a bit, as well as the top. The recipient I'm sure will treasure it though

I think you’re right. I see the plinth type bottom a lot also.
@t-shirtguy7845

Thanks Bruce. If its a eucalyptus (gum) then perhaps its not redgum. Murry River Redgum is a deep red similar to sequoia.
