Some important distinctions that open up an approach to thinking about the structure and evaluation of arguments, including the distinction between inductive and deductive arguments, as well as a distinction between the relationship between premises and their conclusion, and the truth of those premises.

How do you evaluate arguments quickly when in conversation or a debate? Do you look at the structure of the argument first then the content? Do you look to see if the premises are True or False? Do you look at the argument and decide if it is vaild or invalid? WHAT COMES TO MIND FIRST AND IN WHAT ORDER PLEASE?

It's difficult to evaluate arguments accurately AND quickly. The easiest and most effective tip for thinking more clearly is slowing down. Debates tend not to lend themselves well to this, but conversations can if your interlocutor is willing to slow down with you. I find that looking to structure first and truth of the premises second is a better approach, particularly in conversation. This is due mostly to the fact that attending to structure helps us home in on just what the other person means to say and it does so in a graceful and friendly way. Most people rarely say just what they mean in their first, off the cuff formulation. Meeting them with a quick "so it seems like you're trying to say this" revealing the structure of their implied inferences offers an opening for a collaborative negotiation of what their position and its justification really is. Only after this is done can you even know which premises are doing the real work, and therefore which premises need to be critically scrutinized.
