I downsized decorations so that Easter, fall, Halloween and overflow Christmas are in their own popcorn tins. Since we’re a family of three I’ve always been able to live simply. 😀

Karen remember decluttering is a slow process. With regards to your photos would it be possible to spend 10 each evening while watching tv going through them rather than spending time in your basement. You could also use the time to reminisce with your family and show your younger children family members who are no longer with you. Really enjoying your channel and remember slow and steady wins the race x

Karen, keep letting go. Your stuff is overwhelming you. I say this as a sister fan who has the same problem. I’ve been actively de cluttering with you for a long time. It is getting better. Things I once “had to have “ were in a different season of my life. My happiest homes were vacation homes where a Christmas or Fall season decor items all fit in one box. Nothing was misplaced or duplicate purchased cause it was missing. After 53 years of marriage, the stuff and treasures get so out of hand if not paying attention. My husband said just this week, “don’t you have enough now?”. Yes, I do. You encourage me.

You got this!!! Don't get discouraged, you are a Mainer we are tough no matter what!!! Just do one thing at a time. If it helps make a grid pattern and do one or 2 grin sections a day until you have everything the way you want it. I would have kept the summer stuff by itself and put the spring stuff on its own because if you decorate for Easter all your spring stuff and Easter stuff can go together just like Christmas stuff can go together with winter stuff.

We don’t have basements usually in Australia. Unless you live rurally you could stop keeping backups in the basement and whittle down the amount of stuff you keep

I wish we had a basement instead of an attic. It's so difficult to get things and find things from the attic. I have lots of pics to go through too. Sometimes projects like this seem overwhelming but it's always nice once they're done!

Basements can be infuriating. My daughter offered to come by this Saturday and help me get fall and Christmas at least packed up. My dad became ill mid October and passed away November 30. I feel as though I've bearly caught my breath, having gotten so far behind in all housework, and the basement, just overwhelming. Your videos have truly been a blessing, watching you deal with your basement, house through the holidays. Thank you.

Dear karen, It does seem overwhelming! Dont give up! Remember all the stuff you did get rid of! Picture the load in your mind.This will satisfy you! You mentioned where did it all come from. Well, just like house cleaning. The more you clean, the more dirt you see! Our eye gets more scrutinizing/...cant find word. This is just a thought..........With Gods creation, we never get tired of it! Using his creation for our decor(in its natural setting).Looking out the windowor maybe things like pine cones,sticks ect...elements that can be easily returned back to nature. No clutter after! The constant shuffle,energy,time. One day you might come to the conclusion of I am tired of this. The latter sentence is only my feelings. You still love to decorate! 😊

You are so right! I've gotten rid of so much and it is encouraging on the one hand but sometimes discouraging that there is still stuff to deal with. But we are a large family. I am actually almost done with everything I would consider "mine". I do love using nature...what it is not covered in ice! 😂❄️ Perhaps I will get better at it as time moves on. I had time to resift through all our closets, since a call out for the Homeless Center ? Found a lot of nice warm clothing ( hats, gloves, scarves) and heavy socks that were not getting used. Now have a big bin bag full to drop off. We can just donate modestly but such a good feeling. Made very simple pork parmesan , the men loved and enough for lunch tomorrow. Gonna rest. Think of y’all up in Maine.

Karen, your doing an amazing job! whats great is you can look back at your first videos and see how far you have come! When I first started decluttering I got rid of all the easy stuff and then had to start tackling all the sentimental emotional stuff. It may seem silly but I now ask myself, if I moved would I want to pack that. Keep up the great work and thanks for being so honest and showing the struggles.

You are making wonderful progress in the basement! Thank you for the video and the encouragement. It helped me declutter under the bathroom sink that I was not thrilled to do again! It took 15 minutes, I sometimes think we build stuff up in our mind and it takes a whole lot less time and effort to just tackle it! I have set up a regular cleaning routine. As I watched your cleaning video from Monday it made me realize that being able to maintain the house and do the chores is a blessing. I love how you focus on the chores as something enjoyable that you do to care for your household in your family. Has made me think and reflect. I am getting ready for my Mom to arrive next week. My sister is under hospice care. Her pain is managed, she is confused at times, and her daughter who is a nurse stays with her and manages her medication. I am grateful for the time I am able to spend with her. Thank you for asking and your prayers.❤️

I only really decorate for Christmas. It's my favorite holiday after all. I just got so tired of dragging out boxes for every. Single. Holiday or season. I have a giant conch shell for summer and mainly decorate with vases of flowers from my garden all spring, summer and into the fall. I realized we have much to celebrate but I don't need the decor to do that.

I knew my husband appreciates that I keep a simplified, uncluttered home but he doesn’t say much about it so I was surprised when he came home a few days ago after being out at his parents house and told me that his mother had a set of Christmas dishes and serve ware she wanted to send home for me. He politely declined saying we like living with less and not taking up storage space for seldom used things and our daughters and daughters in law are the same way so no they don’t want them either. He’s more of a convert than I thought. 😬 I don’t decorate for Valentines and Easter because I find the the reds and pinks and pastels are too busy for my brain. I have to use neutrals and things from nature like live plants and maybe a bouquet of live flowers at Easter. Karen, thanks for sharing your journey with us. ❤️

I have 12 Halloween totes alone! This Fall I will be giving the majority of it to my adult granddaughter who has grown up with it and will love it like I do, it truly is a collection of things we love. I have already sorted and passed on decor from all other holidays, this will be the toughest, these things are all in my will but I decided to pass them on to her now so we can both enjoy them at her house!🎃

One thing I had to change for myself was shopping. I quit going into stores because I would go in for one thing and come out with five. I realized that I was creating the problem and had to stop it from coming in the door. I am definitely not perfect and things do slip in, but I am more aware of it now. It’s the little things that add up. I currently have a room of stuff to go through, thanks for inspiring me to start working on it. It’s a never ending job😂

Hi my friend. Ohh how I feel you during this video, I too have been struggling with what seems more coming in than has gone out, I agree that it’s Christmas items that seem to have grown, I’ve also gone back and forth concerning a China set we bought some years ago, it’s a full set, my children definitely don’t want it so why am I holding on to it?? I just don’t know. It takes up almost a full lower cupboard, it has to be washed, dried and all put back every spring clean so I’m really dreading it, Each year I end up putting it all back with the ‘I might use it’ Well approximately 8 years on I’ve not used it so..🤦🏼‍♀️ It’s seeming very relentless at the moment so I fully understand your emotions. Despite that I must say you continue to inspire, I don’t wish these feelings on you of course not but it confirms I’m not alone. You are truly not alone, Pam!! I think January is an exhausting month. We area tired from the holidays and we want to get every organized and there is a realization of a big job coupled with the exhaustion of the holidays. China is a sentimental item! Sometimes I don't get rid of something because I just don't know what to do with it. I want to do something that values its honor to me. But I don't know what! Perhaps this will be the year we figure it out!! 🥰💝

I took Louis to the library he loved it!! We spent like 3 hours in there!! When you said its not called the minimal mom its called this mainer mom I laughted! You're making good progress! I've been trying to do one extra decluttering/cleaning project a day (like a drawer or cabinet). We are gearing up for SNOW here in the south. I keep praying for no snow, LOL, but it looks like it's going to snow anyhow! I don't mind the snow, but here in the south everything gets shut down because the roads don't get salted or plowed.

Up here we often have to decide if we will risk life and limb to get to the place we were supposed to be that didn't want to close/cancel! But our roads are cleaned up quick! 2 inches or 2 feet...it's all the same here! ❄️ On a bright note, weather predictions are only 30% accurate so you could be saved from it yet!! and photos, i have begun doing throw back thursday. i take pictures and post my family page, my favorites i do saves as and download to flash drive. so family can get prints of photos for themselves, i let them know i am not keeping paper copies anymore. i only have my sis now and 1/2 dozen cousins & only 2 responded to christmas card. so may not had many pics left at end of month.

Maybe get you're fotos out of the albums (unless they are done really beautifully) and store them in special boxes per year. The albums you really like could go in you're livingroom, so you can look at the pictures. Down in the basement no one can appreciate them. You're video was so relaxing to me. Now I am going back and going through things thoroughly and organizing in a better way. Honestly, I bet there will be a round 3!! You've had a great session down there. I'm impressed with the empty space you created. Good job I don't have a 🚢 or I might be on my way with a few boxes ! Today Keith and I escaped for a while because the care company have found Abi a new carer. We went to the Farm Shop and then to return the camping fridge to the storage unit. Lunchtime treat was a Subway sandwich. This afternoon I have emptied my sewing project basket. It held multiple bags of things I had cut out (often in multiples) for gifts and run out of time to make. I have returned the fabric to my scrap bin and thrown some bits away. Another weight gone. Back to the garage tomorrow.

I need to remember to share this on the channel but someone shared an article with me where this person started bringing one thing they wanted to declutter with them whenever they went to a friend's house and secretly put it on a shelf there!! Then they would see if it was notice. I guess they did it a lot and only once was it noticed!! 😂 You saying you would bring a box over reminded me of that!! You can make faux fur look new again by brushing it out with a pet fur brush and a bottle of water with a little conditioner mixed in. You brush it in one direction with a blow dryer and it’s as good as new!

Yes, bleach on floor. Paper towels and other paper items could be stored on top shelves. It’s a fun family activity to look at photos that haven’t been seen for a while. You might want to take your time going through the albums, writing details on the backs of photos, and pitching duplicates or any that are out of focus. I’ve done this and enjoyed the process.

Feeling that overwhelemed clutter seems to never get better is a part of the process and while yes the issues that cause clutter can actually continue and actually make it seem like youre fighting a losing battle. A lot of the time it will actually be just your perception. Because youre building those muscles and getting a better eye for discerning clutter youre no longer blind to what you had been before so while the clutter may be lesser it will seem like the same or more than when you decluttered. Its why it takes so many sweeps over the house and its not just one and done. So its actually a good thing that youre feeling that it shows progress and that youre recognising the problem as its happening vs when it becomes a massive overwhelming thing and now you know that table will only collect clutter and that labelling tubs will mean things like yarn can go straight in their homes and condensing what you have means you know what you have can use it and wont repurchase or forget things. One tip id reccomend is not to get open organisation and by that i mean yes those small drawer organiser tubs are great for in cupboards but outside of them they collect dust things fall over etc and ideally everything should have a lid to prevent contamination from pests dust other sources like a leak in the roof or whatever and it also means you can easily just grab the tub and go whether its moving or transporting it and stacking it in other places in the case of evacuations or having to quickly move it maybe your basement floods or you need pest control to spray etc then being able to quickly get it out and not worry youre moving pests into different areas of the house like cockroaches mice spiders whatever. But yeah even if the tubs see through or not needs to be labelled and needs a secure lid. Those smaller shallow things are basically only good for drawers and even then getting food containers instead so you can put a lid on it if need be and use it for various things and outside drawers is the best. More money upfront but last forever and much more versatile.

Make sure you seal that box of yarn because that's a place that mice could make a nest I know that's not fun for me to say but I'd rather you take care of it before it happens. We keep plenty of mouse traps set all year long so we're always ahead of the game we learned through trial and error

Woo hoo progress!!! Thanks for the fun video! I’ve been sick with covid for 2 weeks. Needed something fun today! Thanks for the company! Had a serious belly laugh with the mouse. Chappie never ceases to catch me off guard like that! This Mainer Mom I was gonna say something about tossing that mouse so it would scare you another time! But maybe he will find it and bring to you in the middle of the night! Another cat woke me up many many years ago with a LIVE mouse. Oh my word. Freaked me out and don’t think I ever flew out of a bed so fast. Poor thing. Dickens was tossing and playing with it. Got the frozen Christmas tree out of the frozen barrel. The last bit of Christmas is now stowed in the garden shed. Needless to say, it warmed up a little today! Did my six items a day. Tossed some socks, a few kitchen doo-dads. You are doing this, honey!
