Jim has had essential tremor since he was 16. After years of trying different therapies and medications, he came to Penn Medicine neurosurgeon Iahn Cajigas, MD, PhD, to discuss neurosurgical options. After deciding on Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), Jim underwent the procedure at Pennsylvania Hospital.
DBS uses electrical stimulation in the brain to treat movement disorders including dystonia, Parkinson’s Disease, and essential tremor or other neurological conditions such as epilepsy.
As one of the largest treatment programs for DBS in the United States, more than 1,200 DBS procedures have been performed at Penn Medicine. Through robust research and high-volume expertise, Penn Medicine continues to expand the understanding and use of DBS therapy.

Jim, I am SOOO happy for you!!!! 🎉🎉🎉 I have essential tremor. Like you, I couldn't drink, eat, write and my voice was affected. I jumped at the chance. IT WORKED was the first thing I reported to everyone. I cried like you when they had me drink and write in surgery. Congratulations Jim!

I'm getting it now in my early 30s. I'm so sorry that you had to go most of your life with this condition, Jim. I'm pleased to hear that you have seen relief.

I am 54 and I had dual DBS in 2014 for my debilitating essential tremor. The only disappointment was I had to be on such a high setting. My stimulator’s were being replaced every 18 months and last year about this time I had rechargeable put it in.
