Bar Keeper's Friend has been manufacturing and selling it's canned scouring powder since 1882. It was originally invented by chemist George William Hoffman in Indianapolis, Indiana and sold to bars, hence the name, Bar Keeper's friend.
The primary active ingredient is oxalic acid, which makes it particularly good at removing rust, and it's interesting to note that the original formulation is still being manufactured to the same specifications as it was in 1882.
Here's another interesting note, the blue shape behind the Bar Keepers Friend logo represents saloon doors, a nod to the Brand's origins that can still be found today along with the name which remains unchanged.
Since 1957, bar keepers Friend has been manufactured by SerVass Laboratories. Data from 2016 shows that the product was manufactured at a rate of 60,000 cans per day.
The Bar Keeper's Friend brand has expanded to include liquid, cream and spray cleaners, along with specialty cleaners to tackle counters, cooktops and cookware.

If you don’t use it often, go with the powder over the liquid. When stored long term, the liquid eventually settles and separates and shaking it won’t reconstitute it. The powder lasts forever.

When I got rid of my toxic non stick cookware and switched to stainless steele, I picked up BKF and I have loved it for years. I use it every few weeks to restore shine to my pots and pans, as well as to help with the occasional stubborn something that doesn't want to come out. I also use it on my corning bake ware to remove baked on stains once in a while. For both situations, I wash as normal, then sprinkle a little into or onto whatever it is, scrub carefully, and it looks brand new really quick. I always do an after wash to be sure it's all gone. Tfs!

Awhile ago I cleaned my toilet with a store bought toilet bowl cleaner that had bleach. Needless to say, the blue dye stained my toilet (I will admit I did not read the label that well). I tried so many remedies to try and get rid of the stain (vinegar, rubbing alcohol, and even a pumice stone). Anyway, I remembered I had Bar Keepers Friend (which I usually only use for my tub) and I tried it. With a lot of elbow grease, the dye finally was removed! Absolutely love BKF! Did not work on my hard water stains and rings. Nothing at all works on it. I have used at least 8 different toilet cleaners including suggested ones. Too expensive to buy 3 different toilets. I have totally given up. Retired in Mexico and there are not a lot of different products available here.
@literatious308
@literatious308 3 года назад
@@gladysgrand7633 Try "cleaning vinegar", I poured about 8 ounces in toilet bowl & let it soak for a while with closed lid after wetting all areas. Scrub then you'll see if some areas need more time, so just let it sit longer. Don't let it dry! "cleaning vinegar " is 6% acidity versus 5% for regular white vinegar, so you could also use that. PS...My toilet is from the 1930's, I initially used pumice stone wetted with vinegar to gently abrade away the hard water calcium ring deposit. "Whink Rust Remover" is a liquid that is absolutely fantastic at quickly removing rust stains, it's safe for most surfaces & clothes. Use pumice first, then vinegar, then Whink if needed. Don't forget to use latex gloves! Pumice & vinegar are very inexpensive & are must have items for your all purpose cleaning arsenal.
@gladysgrand7633
@gladysgrand7633 3 года назад
@@literatious308 Thank you for your suggestions, but I am of advanced age and kneeling on the floor is not an option. The vinegar you suggested I cannot find here as a lot of products are not available in my area of Mexico. Pumice stones are rocks here and not flat like in the states which would make it easier to use. As for keeping the area wet, because of the weather here, hot, most thing I spray on here dries almost immediately. Thank you for your kindness in answering my problem. I will keep looking for the cleaning vinegar but when I ask you it, they look at me like I am nuts. Thanks again. Stay safe.
@literatious308
@literatious308 3 года назад
@@gladysgrand7633Thanks for responding. You can use regular white vinegar instead, it just takes longer. As for drying, try using the toilet bowl cleaning brush to swish the upper sides every few minutes. I figure it's inexpensive to try

I first tried BKF on your recommendation probably a few years ago. I was constantly fighting with rust stains in my tub and shower. After I had watched one of your videos I decided to give it a try but didn't really have too much confidence that the product would work since I had tried so many things without great success. I was absolutely amazed and I have never looked back since! Cleaning the iron stain was once a very daunting task but after using the BKF more spray it has become almost effortless! I watched in amazement as it took away the stains pretty much on contact! There has been a couple of times when the store I usually buy it from was out so now I buy it by the case just to make sure it is always in my cleaning line up! Thank you for explaining more about this product because it cleared up questions I had about the difference between spray versus powder ect. I've used "the friend" on many antique porcelain and glass telephone and telegraph insulators. For this I often do mix it with water in a bucket and let the items sit for a few days. Nothing takes 150 years of coal and diesel smoke off glass like oxalic acid. I've used Barkeeper's Friend for over 50 years on my stainless steel sinks, and on my metal pans. I didn't realize you could use it on Corian which I have counters of, so I will be testing that. Thank you for the tip. 😊

I live in the UK, my mum bought me some of the power. I was impressed by how well it removes stains but I found it difficult to apply and found that it tended to get on the floor etc in the area around where I was cleaning. I wasn't particularly happy with this who will eat anything they find. I'll look into the foam or cream, may be better for me. I think generally though, if a stain won't clean off a surface I am okay just leaving it there!

Great new segment! You taught me some new things about BKF! I've only purchased it once. But now I plan on getting some more! I would be using it on my stainless steel kitchen sink, stainless cookware and on my gas range too! Thanks again. Love your shows!

I have used the gold premixed product however it is SO important to know that it must be kept shaken before using and while using because in will separate and you will end up having little to no liquid and thick sludge at the bottom of the container. With that said used right it is fantastic!!!

I’m very excited about this series! I almost didn’t watch this video because I thought it was a sponsorship, but I love that this series will be unbiased reviews. A product I would love to hear more about is Comet. I’m a little intimidated by it! 😅

Great video, Melissa! Very helpful. Looking forward to your additions to this series. Am especially interested in seeing "what to use, when" when a product line has multiple items ... like you did for BKF. 😊

Thanks Melissa- I have a porcelain sink and I’m excited to try this. Also for my pots and pans. Soft scrub and gel bleach don’t work on scuff marks, and magic eraser doesn’t do enough. Thanks !

I use it for cleaning the Kitchen sink from my husband coffee and the shower soap scum build up in a weeks time. Have used it on some pans bottoms, never on the inside. Going to try it on the oven window. I would say anything we can use with more information is great to have.

BKF is the ONLY product I have found that will clean the non-slip grid in my tub. About once a month I sprinkle it on the tub as soon as I get out of the shower, let it soak while I am dressing, then scrub it and rinse. It is amazing!

I've used bar keepers friend before, but had no idea it was that strong. I'm so glad you did a video on this. Its great to know how powerful it is. I have well water at the hard iron deposits I've used original lysol toilet bowl cleaner as a hack to obliterate those horrible tough stains in seconds. This might be as good.

Hi, this video was really useful, particularly about how long to leave it on for and whether it should be mixed with other products. I didn't realize the range had expanded probably because I have not seen anything but the powder on the shelf. I love hearing about new uses for products. I know that it is not a range, but would love to hear what apple cider vinegar could be used for. thanks

I use bkf powder on my stainless steel and porcelain and can't live without it! I do like the powder more than the soft scrub, it just didnt seem as powerful and it dried out in the bottle. Thanks for all the great information and new ideas how to use it. I'm going to try it out on my pots, silverware, plates, toilet bowl and grout! Also the spray is intriguing and I'm going to have to check it out.
