Basenjis are vocal, they just don't convey their emotions as a typical bark. But they definitely have their own "vocabulary". We have two basenjis, and they both have no problem telling us how they feel 😆
@@kevingreat875 there is no history of animal husbandry in the Congo. No doubt this piece of information will be of no use seeing as you said the word 'fucking' completely unprovoked.
@@lits3403 your weak grasp on the English language doesn't make me wrong. You are clearly not clever enough to process what I've said which is irrefutable.
@@reelarosin2897 atleast he’s cute mine just won’t ever stop barking unless u pick him up and give him lots of love and attention it’s cute but jeez can it get Tiring after him doing it for a hour
@@doolenny9458 well I must say that until he gets what he wants by barking he will continue that. I would ignore barking and I would walk away from him to show that barking will not help 😉 when dig behaves good then he gets what he want - treat or petting etc
What a beautiful animal. His gaze emanates a higher intelligence. He seems all-knowing. If he could only speak, he would tell you the secrets of the universe. Until then, he will just keep on trying (to speak).
If you know Basenjis and have had them for any length of time you know what they are saying. They have lived with tribes deep in the African jungle for thousands of years. They are extremely intelligent and they do communicate with you.
I believe it too. Me and Buddy The half Chihuahua half Basenji have special subjects we converse on. Like 'Yes, that scratch feels good, Mum', 'Ooh, pat me like dat' and his favourite - 'When's my next treat, Mum'. He is hilarious and keeps me thoroughly entertained 🌵💗
We adopted a dog a few weeks ago that we thought was debarked or mute. I am fairly certain she is a basenji mix, she sounded exactly like those first few.
I had a besenji 10 years ago.. Was the most amazing pet I have ever known. Lot of communication between him and I. Exactly the same color as this one.... (little nostalgic :( ) I love besenji!
Do they shed a lot? I noticed in the video theres quite a lot of fur on the sofa and I kinda wanted a basenji because I cant really deal with hairs everywhere.. but with the state of the sofa in this video I'm reconsidering it.
Basenji's are one of the best dogs, in my opinion! We have a Basenji/Lab mix named Tim who is 8 or 9 years old...we rescued him in 2010...they said he was between 1-2 years old, although, I think he was barely 1. He is STILL a playful soul, all be it, not with as much stamina. The Basenji is such a unique dog, unlike many others, and, from my perspective having kept several dogs all my 54 years on earth. And, when compared to a Lab, just about at the opposite end of the "dog spectrum"!! So, when you mix the two, it makes for some GREAT comedy! Basenji's are clean, don't shed, don't like water, and, kind of aloof. Lab's on the other hand are the opposite of all those things!!! No matter how BIG they get, they still want to sit on your lap!!! Tim, not so much. He MIGHT, come sit on the couch next to you, as long as there is a pillow and/or blanket for him to lay on. But, he has NEVER been in anyone's lap, in fact, if you try to put him there, he will wriggle free and run off to another room. He even lays in bed with us...but, don't try to "spoon" with him! That isn't his thing. Perhaps its the Basenji in him...or maybe just the fact he spent so much time in shelters...he came to us already with a Microchip that had been registered with 3 names, Tim, Roger and Tyson...who names there dogs these things? I don't know, but, we felt the poor guy had already been through the wringer enough, when we got him, he responded to all 3 names...we felt, Timmy was a fine name, the last thing he needed was to learn a 4th name! Right now, 1 dog is definitely enough for us. I am SO impressed with this breed, I see videos like this, I am definitely hooked on the breed! Maybe we will try a full-breed Basenji....they just aren't very common breed. Thanks for positing your great video!!!
Mike Mascow thank you so much :) For sure I would recommend to take basenji. They are so smart and good dogs (if you know how to make them good), and mine barks when there is a danger (someone coming from the dark) or when he invites someone to play or when I tell him to bark of course :D last ones are mostly with mute, all I hear is his teeth getting together :D
That is exactly what you want...who needs a dog that is always yapping? Our guy lets you know when he needs something, water, food, go out. He sits in front of you (much like yours), makes eye contact...wagging tail and fidgeting. He'll bump your elbow (in case you can't see the 70 lb dog in front of you)...then he starts to "talk"...like your guy, eventually leading to a bark...you can have a conversation with him too...lately, he does it every night, not because he needs food, water or to go out....he wants a TREAT!!! You give him 1, and then, he leaves you alone the rest of the night. Funny dog.
Mike Mascow wow! I am just amazed by this breed. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and inside. Too bad the full bred ones are not easily to obtain. I will still continue to look
You are welcome! And, your right, they are NOT easy to find...full bred are rather expensive. I'm not sure if there is a "rescue" service for the breed. I don't know how we got so lucky as to find Tim, but, I am sure if you look hard enough, you will find one. Good luck to you! BTW - after living 25 years at the same home, we recently moved. Tim was EXTREMELY panicked. He never likes when our suitcases come out...imagine his reaction to stacks and stacks of boxes in every room! As we were moving, he couldn't be around the house, movers have the door propped open, we'd be constantly chasing him. So, he went over to his "girlfriends" house during the day time, a friend of ours who has a 4 yr old female Blue Healer. Tim is about 9. Needless to say, when he got back home at night, he was too exhausted to care. The second night, we were finally settled in the new house. He transitioned very well. It helps a dog to relax when they are well-excercised. Their stress is relieved. Moving, especially an older dog, can be very hard on them. Before we moved, we brought him over to the neighborhood, let him sniff around the trees. We also were sure that certain items came with in the move, and weren't washed, like his bed and a few blankets we left lay around, so, some of his old familiar smells were around. We also scooped up about 15 gal of pea gravel from his "spot" where he did his business at the old house, along with a wooden stake we had pounded in the ground for him to lift his leg on, even brought over a few fresh piles of his poop. The new house has a similar "penned" area for him to go out in...we spread that all out for him and set it up...he walked right in, we showed him the new area, he went right to it and made potty. Maybe Tim is just an easier going dog...I just recall as a teenager, we moved across town and, not really thinking about our old dog, just brought him with. Everything at the new house was different, even the doors, from which side they opened, he was always sticking his nose in the hinges when we went to go open a door! We eventually had to put him down because he just wouldn't sleep, kept making messes in the house. We didn't want a repeat of that! So, if and when it is time to move, think about your dog and help him/her transition to the new home.
And...as for Basenji's being a "barkless" dog...it isn't that they don't "bark", they don't have the vocal chord structure other dogs have...experts claim, Basenji's are the oldest dog breed on record, dating back to Egypt, drawings on the Pyramids. They also claim the dog was bread over time to not "bark". The sound is more of a howl... But, I can say this about our Basenji/Lab mix....Labs are barkers. We rescued Tim...while other dogs were barking away in their cage, Tim stayed silent. We got him home, didn't hear him bark once in the first 6 mo after we rescued him. Today, he definitly barks, all though, he weighs 65 pounds, the voice does not match the body! But, his "barking" is only to alert us to danger...mostly when someone is at the door or walking close to the house. Otherwise, when he is outside, if he hears another dog bark, he rarely chimes in. He will run and look to see who's making all the racket...but, stays silent. Before Tim, we had 2 Jack Russel Terriers...talk about barking fools!!! The one got the other one going...one would see a leaf blow across the lawn and you'd think the place was being robbed.
Please get your fact straight, this dog do not originate from Egypt it's originate from the Congo and Sudan, and it's the most popular dig in africa, and we mostly use it for hunting dew to it silent and speed in nature.
I noticed fur on the sofa, not sure if the owner just doesn't clean regularly or what but was thinking of getting a basenji due to little shedding but the sofa has made me reconsider
@@vivaelphaba some dogs don't really shed much or at all. Why sarcastically recommend a plant and not just a more appropriate dog breed lol. Dont know why you think all dog owners are required to be able to tolerate fur shedding
If you're talking about the black-colored statues of Anubis, Egyptian god of the dead, nobody knows for sure what they were modeled after. Some scholars think that they're based on jackals because of the jackal's association with carrion. Pharoah hounds are also possible models for statues of Anubis. I don' think I've ever read anything about Anubis being based on Basenjis, but it certainly seems possible. I have a German shepherd/Basenj mix named Lucy, and when she wants something, she can be a royal pain in the butt with all her nagging, whining, yodeling, griping, complaining, and grumping. If any dog breed could talk somebody to death, it would definitely be a Basenji!
haha. priceless. my girlfriend has two (which means i do, too). the funniest thing is how they begin any utterances with "the yawn". they're a funny breed of pooch. :)
