This is Jane’s first excursion after her big solo show at Port Moody Arts Centre. She admits that there can be a bit of a lull for artists after a big show and all the work that it entails. However, she advocates getting right back on the saddle, so to speak, and get outdoors right back into painting.
The boats at Deep Cove, in North Vancouver, caught her eye. She felt the boats where waiting in the harbour for their next journey similar to what she was contemplating: where her next painting journeys would take her.
Jane says she has been doing the 37 minute and 37 stroke paintings in order to grasp the real essence of how she paints on location. She says she considers such techniques while building on them in order to get an impression of the marina. She notices it is a grey day and a pleasant quiet.
Feeling that she would like to get a gesture of the place, Jane uses a soft grey line of paint to the first part of the landscape. She sees quarry rock (a popular hiking destination from Deep Cove) and makes a unique mark to place it in the painting.
She also notes the tree tops and so rhythmically puts in a few vertical strokes while mentioning that the whole area will be dark. She is not counting strokes but carries the paint along and says that even a small brush can cover a substantial amount (with enough paint on it).
She likes the form of the mountains in the distance and realizes they will be lighter as they recede but first cuts in their simple shapes. Her brush dances as she mentions the "green play" within the shapes and gets the water “moving” with certain overlays. She remembers the little boat by whipping some paint out for its shape.
Jane sees a reflection of pink in the water and puts it in with a quick movement. She also adds some light blue opaue strokes to the water to make the boat stand out.
Then she pays attention to a bit of bright grass on the top of quarry rock and puts in this detail with a few dots of bright colour.
Back to the boat she asks herself “What about this boat” and wonders what is the minimal brushwork she can place in the painting to get the gesture of the boat. She makes a few diagonal strokes and carries on.
Her focus then goes to the island in the distance mentioning it is darker and makes small dark strokes that lead the way into the painting.
Jane brings her brush through areas to guide the eye through the scene and to the boat. Standing on the shore she looks forward to the next journey ahead.
