In the afternoon of the lapping waters of Ambleside Beach, Jane speaks of Journeys and what brought her to that location. By the ocean, she says, is where she could feel the freedom of the ocean coming in with the breeze, feeling that this may inspire her to paint something that feels that way.
She starts with grey undertone, because of the grey day and stresses on simplifying the scene.
She reminds us to put the major shapes in first and details later, asking basically what are the gestures presenting themselves and the colour tones.
She sweeps across the board to cover it and places some logs in with a few simple strokes of varying mixed colours. With a larger brush of mixed white she cuts in the water around the pebbles and covers some more of the board with warm colour.
Jane playfully strokes dark green vertical strokes with a filbert brush and angles it to get a variety of textures and blending. She explains that they lead your eye in and that they are gentle renditions.
She notes the grass looks bluer as it comes forward (not the usual) and places the appropriate colour down. Then with a larger brush taps in some lights in-between.
Jane uses a rag to spread and blend some of the paint on the board at this point, and then continues with different sized brushes for gestures of locks, rocks, waves and sand.
Jane says it is ok to use muted colours as they are a nice contrast to some of the pure colours in the piece. She hopes there is a suggestion of the light shining in the harbour on the horizon.
As she lays in the little waves coming in around the rocks, Jane summarizes her painting with these words:
“Like the ocean, you go in and out of the harbour, in and out of the painting, and produce some kind of expression of the flow of the day, and the memories of being out in the fresh air. And be thankful for the day.”
