I’m very grateful to Pete as I had somehow overlooked this band. I only knew Don’t Fear the Reaper and nothing else. I got into them after he picked Secret Treaties as his album of 1974. I knew an album that came top in that year had to be killer. And it was. I now own several of their albums and working my way through their catalogue. All thanks to Pete.

For me, BOC are the greatest rock band of all time and I really enjoyed this video. There are so many deep cuts possible from this great band so yes, please do another show. I'm going to pick another 10 not mentioned by yourselves, although of course I absolutely love all the ones you've talked about, especially: Nosferatu and Hammer Back. In no particular order: Sinful Love, Stone Of Love, Magna Of Illusion, Live For Me, Divine Wind, Fireworks, The Vigil, Perfect Water, Shooting Shark and Workshop Of The Telescopes.

Yeah, I’m obsessed with Quicklime Girl right now. It’s definitely the best song on the album. It took a while for it to catch on with me, but that riff is irresistible, and Albert’s syncopated beats are innovative; almost grungy.

This is SO cool! Martin is just the right guy for this one. My 10 deep cut BOC pics: 1) Death Valley Nights - Spectres (maybe Albert's best song) 2) Deadline - Cultosaurus Erectus 3) Redeemed - Blue Oyster Cult (their most psychedelic song on a BOC record) 4) The Siege and Investiture of Baron von Frankenstein's Castle at Weisseria - Imaginos (How's that for a long song title?) 5) Monsters - Cultosaurus Erectus 6) Moon Crazy - Mirrors 7) Shadow of California - Revolution By Night 8) When The War Comes - Club Ninja (very underrated Joe Bouchard track) 9) Morning Final - Agents of Fortune 10) Teen Archer - Tyranny and Mutation I must say I've seen BOC around 60+ times and they are quite the deep cut band in a live setting. They always pull out some deep ones for every show.

Glad they're finally releasing a new studio album this year after releasing about 362 live albums the past two decades. But here are my deep cuts: 1. The Entire Imaginos album 2. White Flags (Club Ninja) 3. Flaming Telepaths (Secret Treaties) 4. Harvester of Eyes (Secret Treaties) 5. Out of the Darkness (Curse of the Hidden Mirror) 6. Harvest Moon (Heaven Forbid) Not sure "Subhuman" fits the bill, but that could be there too, as a slightly more obscure track.

Great show, guys, enjoyed it very much! Martin, about the dot matrix printed lyric sheets, I know they go back to at least Tyranny and Mutation. I acquired the album when it came out (in "Quadraphonic Sound"!) and my buddy and I sent off for them. We had a recent online discussion about the album, and he wrote: "I still have the lyrics sheets we mailed out for, like 45 years ago. I mentioned this to Sandy one day when we were hanging out in the office (Alpha & Omega Studio & 415/Columbia Records shared a suite) and he told me that he printed them out himself on his personal home computer and mailed them. He was floored when I brought them in to show him."

I'm glad you guys did this! Just a few days ago, I was sending my litany of Blue Öyster Cult to friends, adding onto it with each iteration. You guys hit on a lot of key points, but as you know, it's tough to insist somebody listen to an entire discography. Each album sounds like it should be coming from an entirely different band, and many songs tend to span genres even. I love this band, and I can still remember going to a concert, being about five feet away from Buck, and I jumped up and down and screamed, "Mirrors," like a crazy man because I was, and he started playing The Vigil, which is still awesome, but I was hoping for the Mirrors cover. If I can't explain their greatness to a child, I can't understand it myself, so here goes: Super poppy: Still Burnin'; modern metal: Hammer Back; country: Real World; tear jerker: Live For Me; wedding dance: Light Years of Love; sad break up: In Thee; glad breakup: Revenge of Vera Gemini; pompous rock: Magna of Illusion; coming out: Celestial the Queen; staying in: Out of the Darkness; don't do drugs: Feel the Thunder; do do drugs: I Love The Night; don't sell drugs: Then Came The Last Days of May; quit killing people: Make Rock Not War; start killing people: Divine Wind; kick some ass: Beat 'Em Up; go ahead and be yourself, but look out: Madness to the Method; feel the romance, Girlie: White Flags; run from that guy, Girlie: See You In Black; it all works out: You're Not The One (I Was Looking For); if Green Day wanted to rekindle a relationship: Here Comes That Feeling; don't get blackout drunk: Veins; you're drunk, I bet you won't write a song right now and put it on an album: Let Go; those bikers can be a rough lot: Transmaniacon MC; sometimes, bikers can just crack you up: The Golden Age of Leather; talk is cheap: Eye of the Hurricane; you can't take advantage, Girlie: Sinful Love; honey bees have it tough: Wings Wetted Down; some may blame the plague on vampires: Nosferatu; perhaps a lyric that inspired the name of the coming album: Shadow of California; other genius worth hearing: everything else. I'm sure the band could weigh in on these thoughts, but they've got better things to do. Great job breaking things down and restricting yourselves like that--I know it's difficult!

I've been on a couple of BÖC marathons in the past few weeks, so it's relatively fresh in my head, and let me just say that the sheer amount of interesting deep cuts in their catalogue is nothing short of staggering! Here are my picks: 1. The Vigil (probably known as one of the best songs from Mirrors, but hey- it's an underrated album in general. To me this song is irresistible with so much of its guitar content. Atmospheric, melodic and with many lead breaks. I also get a nice range of vibes from this song- almost as if you get Deep Purple, The Beatles and early '70s Judas Priest all in one. This song is packed!) 2. Tenderloin (Another song that is crammed with musical content, this time a considerably shorter one... This is a good showcase of BÖC's skill to make songs that are sort of awkward and elegant at the same time... Among the highlighted parts is Buck's funky jazz riffs around the 2-minute mark and the harmonies right at the end.) 3. Searchin' for Celine (More diversity with a song that is kind of boogie but goes into total jazz mode for the final lead break... Allen Lanier was a consistently good keyboardist and yet I'd say this is one of his top moments.) 4. Spy in the House of the Night (Club Ninja is a mini-well for deep cuts, pun intended for Perfect Water... However, on this last marathon it's one of the songs that I overlooked earlier but found myself suddenly addicted to... To me it's actually more reminiscent of maybe Cultosaurus or Fire.) 5. Fallen Angel (Speaking of Cultosaurus, not only is this song quite fun and catchy, but it's actually a deep cut of the rarest kind... That's because it features Joe Bouchard on vocals, but contrary to something like Nosferatu, he has a sort of Graham Bonnet type wail here!) 6. Workshop of the Telescopes (One of my faves from the debut; gorgeous songwriting and some of those The Doors vibes.) 7. 7 Screaming Diz-Busters (If you're looking for some of BÖC best displays of early heavy metal, this one says it all... Buck absolutely shreds licks that might even be ahead of their time.) 8. Vengeance/The Pact (Expanding on the heavy metal part, this one actually has shades of nwobhm in it. Truly one of the hidden gems from Fire of Unknown Origin.) 9. Veins (An almost hilarious contrast of innocent sounding AOR-type musicality with potentially psychopathic and homicidal lyrics, almost like Fight Club meets The Tell-Tale Heart.) 10. Dragon Lady (Another from The Revölution by Night, a catchy but psudo-heavy song that seems to combine more classic BÖC with some of their 80's efforts.)

So many gems in the treasure chest to choose from, but I think I’ll go with two back-to-back pairs from Spectres - the Side One desolate desert duo of of “Golden Age of Leather” followed by “Death Valley Nights” and the Side Two creatures of the night mating of “I Love the Night” and “Nosferatu”. The melodies, the lyrics, and the haunting harmonizing here - BOC made some magic music.

Thank you Pete for hosting Martin in this video. BOC is one of my favorite American bands; and I have had the privilege of meeting them on, off and backstage!! As well as being kissed on the cheek by the best shortest guitarist in rock. (Next to Joe B, of course). In fact I've met all of them including Rick Downey. I too have an obsession with the supernatural and vampires; which is what attracted me to them in the first place. I've been lucky to have seen them play I Love The Night, Tattoo Vampire, Deadline, and Blue Coupe play Nosferatu. Have yet to see any incarnation do Wings Wetted Down though. I was emailing Eric (through MySpace) for awhile and finally just asked him about the influence of HP Lovecraft and vampires in their music. He admitted that HPL was an influence, but mostly because of Pearlman and Krugman. Although The Old Gods Return was written by Bloom, Dharma and John Shirley. Anyway, there is an interesting article that interprets their 'vampire' songs. It is very good; Overlooked Pearls: The Blue Oyster Cult and the Vampire in Popular Music. by David F Hallett and J Robin Martin; if you are interested. Because I have played all of the albums to death; well near Death (Club Ninja and Imaginos) and because I have seen them live 13 times I have a hard time with the FIVE deep cuts. I would suggest one from each album. Thank you for the research, time and knowledge of your channel. You too Martin!

I remember those computer lyric sheets !!!! Great Band. Had the BEST light/Laser show1977-78 before they stopped allowing bands to shoot lasers into the eyes of the audience. I attended SUNY Potsdam 1976-78 and the Cult's origins were actually there, before dropping out and moving to LI. Buck was a Clarkson engineering student in the mid-1960s while the Bouchards were from up the road in Watertown, NY. In the spring of 1977, BOC brought their entire big arena rig to the tiny 2K seat Walker arena in Potsdam and put on a hell of a show. They were touring on Agents of Fortune, showcased those songs, and many of the best B&W era tunes. Made me a fan for life. Caught them many times the next 5 years. Another memorable show was them performing at My Fathers Place on LI in 1982 as "Soft White Underbelly". Sad that internal divisions with the Bouchards damaged the band. They seemed to run out of songs the mid 80s. Still great act ...I caught them in Peekskill last year. RIP Alan Lanier.

"Deadline", from Cultasaurus: love the foreboding vibe on this otherwise very poppy song song. "Les Invisibles", from Imaginos: when that riff hits in the chorus is so good, but then it comes back when it seems like its going back to the verse. Holy crap "Monsters", from Cultasaurus: love the messed up sci-fi lyrics. Super heavy as well. Almost NWOBHM "Shadow Warrior", from Club Ninja: Starts out doomy, and then ventures into all out SPEED METAL. Gotta love it. "Celestial the Queen", from Spectres: my favorite BOC album. I just love how dreamy this song sounds. I can listen to it over and over. Honorable mention: Blue Oyster Cult (the subhuman), from Imaginos

I was barely 10 years old when I first listened to Blue Oyster Cult. Back then I would go to Camelot Music and buy cassette tapes from the $1 and $2 sections very often. I worked at my dad's restaurant on the weekends , and I made $50 every week. I have always loved music ever since I can remember, especially Hard Rock/ Heavy Metal music. The general manager at the Camelot Music store I always went to with my older sister was a huge Hard Rock/ Heavy Metal fan, so I always got him to show me everything in the $1 and $2 sections that is Heavy Metal music. One time he pointed at Blue Oyster Cult's album Club Ninja in the $2 section and I loved it on my first listen big time. I know that it is considered to be their weakest album from most Blue Oyster Cult fans, but I have always loved it and I still do. The whole album other than Perfect Water is pretty much deep cuts. I love everything on it, but some of my favorites are White Flags, Shadow Warrior, When The War Comes, Spy In The House Of The Night, and Madness To The Method. I do also love songs like Make Rock Not War and Beat Em Up even though they have not aged really well.

Here's five from the weeds that I like a lot! "Golden Age of Leather" "Les Invisibles" "A Spy in the House of the Night" (Yes, I know it's from "Club Ninja" and I don't care. I still like it!) "Celestial the Queen" "Before the Kiss, a Redcap" and, I vote yes for a 2nd (or 3rd) BOC "Deep Cut Dive".

Could have a ton of deep cuts for this amazing band. Check out “In Thee” from Mirrors a great pop tune that should have been a number one hit. Also “I Love The Night” from Spectres and “Debbie Denise” from Agent’s of Fortune for their Pop craft. On the heavy side dig into their early catalog particularly the amazing live album “On your Feet or on your Knees” heavy times ten.

My deep cuts are (in chronological order) Morning Final - a weird song about a subway murder. The riff is *almost* discoish, it's very catchy, but the bridge is almost proggy. It's a really interesting song Nosferatu - Great choice by Pete and has always been a favourite. Mirrors - Great choice by Martin, I think the lyrics are more applicable in the internet age. Monsters - Another weird one from Cultasaurus Erectus. I don't normally like saxophone, but the weird sax breaks work in this song. Demon's Kiss - From Bad Channels, which no one talks about. It's a great, really catchy and proves BOC could still write great songs. Honourable mention (cheating!): Real World - From Heaven Forbid. A catchy bluesy number sung by Buck that I really like.

To keep my post brief: Every song from their first 4 studio albums. Seriously, I'd go crazy trying to pick favorites from those albums alone. And then you've got a ton of songs from all the albums that followed.. Nuts, I tell ya.

Lately, I can't get enough of "The Revenge Of Vera Gemini". This is simply a killer track for many reasons, among which are: That bass, that groove, the vocals by both Albert and Patti are haunting, the dark lyrics, the guitar work, the keyboard work is stellar, the drum sound, the composition of the song. Did I leave anything out? There are times when I think this is the best track on the entirety of Agents Of Fortune. And that's saying something, because I love every track on this album, including Debbie Denise, a song that gets slagged now and then, but I've always loved it. ETI is also a fantastic song for all the same reasons as Revenge. True Confessions is a funky number that totally works for me. I could just go down the track listing and comment on every one of them, but I'll spare you all. 🙂 I love Agents Of Fortune. Maybe not as much as I love the first three albums, but I still love it very much, and never skip a track while playing it. The production is a bit murky to my ears, but the songwriting and performances more than make up for any shortcoming in that department.

Anything really from Imaginos. A deep deep hidden gem within 80s rock, full of brilliant discoveries. "Del Rios Song", "In the presence of another World". Two amazers that sound totally different from eachother. Del Rio is a huge feel good anthem- massive chorus. In the presence... meanwhile is an excellent, eerie atmospheric rocker. Id also go with "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" from Fire of Unknown Origin. The icy, chilling synths layer this unreal, creepy spacey vibe with a soldier beat percussion. Just incredible.

Great show Pete and Martin, spent hours trying to select 5 deep dive cuts but found it impossible, I love em all to much. Had tickets to see the oyster boys in the UK this spring supporting Deep Purple (What a show that would have been, damn virus). Glad to see Steve Morse in yesterday's interview with Pete confirming this year's gigs have been rebooked and hope BOC will still be on the bill in the UK. I would recommend Martins BOC books, required reading for Cult fans.

Blue Öyster Cult is one of my favorite bands of all time. It’s gonna be really difficult, since I’d say most of their songs are deep cuts, but I’ll try to limit myself on this one. 1. “Transmaniacon MC” off the debut 2. “Teen Archer” off Tyranny and Mutation 3. “The Revenge of Vera Gemini” off Agents of Fortune 4. “Unknown Tongue” off Cultösaurus Erectus 5. “After Dark” off Fire of Unknown Origin EDIT: Know what, I really have to at least mention the rest of the songs I love from BÖC that don’t ever get enough love. So here’s the rest of my full list: • I’m on the Lamb but I Ain’t No Sheep • Then Came the Last Days of May • Stairway to the Stars • Before the Kiss, A Redcap • Screams • She’s as Beautiful as a Foot • Workshop of Telescopes • Hot Rails to Hell • Mistress of the Salmon Salt (Quicklime Girl) • Black Blade • Monsters • Deadline • Lips in the Hills • Fire of Unknown Origin • Sole Survivor • Vengeance (The Pact) • Joan Crawford (I know it charted but it doesn’t get enough praise)

Great video. I had the lyric printouts too, but only had to send a SASE to get them. I agree about "Mirrors". The album isn't my favorite, but the song is awesomely catchy and hard to get out of your head after hearing. It was co-written by Bruce Abbott, who also co-wrote another great song, "Golden Age of Leather". "Transmaniacon MC" became relatively well-known after it was included in the Guitar Hero game. Hope you guys do a part 2 in the future. BOC has so many songs worth talking about!

Seems like every time I do a deep dive on a band you come out with one of these on them! As a young fan it's really great to learn about the bands that I have been discovering as I didn't grow up with them. It's a shame Blue Oyster Cult dont get as much mainstream recognition beyond 1 hit. They were a really great band with loads of great rock songs. I've been listening to "Godzilla" on repeat since I first heard it a couple of weeks ago, in terms of less popular songs I really like "Transmaniacon MC", no idea what he's singing about but I really like the riff 😂

Great show Pete! You can never have enough features on Blue Oyster Cult, and your viewing figures will support that claim. I would certainly love to hear a second deep cut dive on their music. The Buck songs tend to be my favourites, as I consider him to be one of the most underrated singers, songwriters and guitarists in the whole of rock music. My selections therefore feature him most prominently: Teen Archer - Tyranny And Mutation I Love The Night - Spectres * The Vigil - Mirrors Dragon Lady - The Revolution By Night Here Comes That Feeling - Curse Of The Hidden Mirror * Spectres is my favourite album of theirs and I much prefer it to the more heavily praised Agents Of Fortune. In the event that I Love The Night doesn’t count as a deep cut, I would also choose Nosferatu from that great album.

I've been a BOC fan all my life. Spectres is an incredibly underrated album. Some of the standout tracks are Death Valley Nights, Nosferatu, I Love The Night, The Golden Age of Leather. Great stuff! I think of Mirrors as a transitional album, equidistant in release to their two biggest hits, e.g., two albums after Agents of Fortune and two albums before Fire of Unknown Origin. The keyboards are more prominent on Mirrors, not that I have anything against it. Alan Lanier did fine work. Cultosaurus Erectus, the following album, is just a blast. My uncle used to crank it at parties and jam to it with his band. Some great tracks are Black Blade, Monsters, The Marshall Plan, and Lips In The Hills. I would agree that while Martin Birch's production on both CE and FOUO are on the compressed and dry side, I think what he was going for above all else is clarity and tight production. They are still great albums. I agree that After Dark is a very underrated track. It should have been a big hit.

I was intrigued that Martin led off his likes with “Mirrors.” Far from the “Imaginos” concept, Buck sent me a bunch of random guitar riffs to listen to. One caught my attention. I was in my easy chair listening, and picked up my wife’s Vogue magazine. Flipping through the pages, the words “Pretty girls can’t look away” popped into mind as the words matched the cadence of the riff. The rest then wrote itself. Thanks, you guys made an old man’s night!
