As a forklift road tech (been in the industry for just over a year now) I love these videos. I know RU-vid pushes creators to make reels instead of long form videos and I do love your content, I would love even more to see more forklift/industry videos like this more often. Your video on replacing a Toyota radiator actually helped me immensely as I’ve had to do that a few times now and would be doing it the dumb way to this day. Either way, keep it up and best wishes from BC, Canada!!

Great video and me living in AZ. there are lots of golf carts and most people I know change out the set when one goes bad. I had been running gel deep cycle in my wheelchair (2-12V for a 24 V system) for years and I got about 3 years out of them but when one goes bad, replace both. $300 each. My new chair came with Lithium and what a difference. My range has almost doubled but it came at a cast. $5000 but I am able to go all day without running out of power and should last the life of the chair. (about 5-6 years) I am very active in teaching and building furniture,, and unloading trailers so The new batteries have made a huge difference

The lithium batteries are definitely an improvement over lead acid but as you mentioned they’re a little pricey. I think as far as commercial applications go lead acid batteries will be around for a while.

I work with these batteries on a daily basis mainly on scissor lifts. A few quick checks during the daily/weekly inspections no one does. When checking levels in each cell, before blindly filling, look for extreme differences in water level. IE one will be at a normal use level, one will be down to the plates and one near the top of the cap; usually accompanied by wet tops of batteries or complaints of leaking batteries. One cell is feeding the other it’s water. Thus being bad. I have had luck finding the bad egg in the bunch by plugging in to on board charging system and check voltages while being charged and have found one to be charging at a very high rate. Strong sulfur smell is sign of over charging as well. The hydrometer can throw people off some times if you don’t burn off that “top” charge after being connected to a charge system. I do have one of the expensive load testers that’s will test at 75amp for 120min ( I think but most don’t make it anywhere near, maybe 70-80) it is nice to have but with time involved sometime it can be a pain to pull out unless trying to give the customer a relative estimate of life of the battery left. We use distilled water but our jobs never have that on site, who can blame em. Just yesterday I got to a job and one battery had the caps off just sitting on top of the battery and water was non existent down to the plates. Any water is better than no water.

Another difference between starter batteries and deep-cycle batteries (at least the ones i've seen), the deep-cycle batteries tend to have a larger "trough" underneath the electrodes so that the crud that eventually flakes off have somewhere to go where they don't touch the electrodes, so they don't self discharge/short cells. Sidenote: as far as i know, the recommended depth of discharge is ~50% of the capacity if you're aiming for maximum longevity, but it's probably going to vary on how fast you're discharging them etc
@wjlafrance
@wjlafrance 2 года назад
Thanks for the content. For capacity testing I got a “A10H” cheap-looking electronic load on eBay for $80. I blew up one of the power mosfets because they advertised 30V but the mosfet was only specced for 20V, so I replaced the mosfets and it’s good again. The software has graphing, capacity totaling, and programmable voltage cut-out, in addition to charging modes. Great for both lead acid and lithium and the best option I’ve seen below the serious $300+ options.

I feel so cool right now. I run the cart shop at a golf course, our fleet consists of 70, 2016 model year Yamaha 48 volt golf carts. Each cart has 6 batteries. The ends that bolt to the terminals always corrode off so we clean the battery tops with water, baking soda, water, then compressed air. Spray fluid film on the ends once you’ve done that they’ll last for a long time. My theory for why the ends corrode off is because the batteries get overfilled and vent excess acid onto the terminals and ends, or it’s because they run hot.

I had a crack in the battery in my truck when I was in college and it was slowly leaking acid. I would top it off with distilled water occasionally because I had no money and I like to procrastinate. One time when I put the cap back on, a bit of acid/water shot directly into my eye. Would not recommend. I washed it with a ton of water and my vision was blurry still so I went to the ER. They flushed it with several bags of IV fluid. The outside layer of my eye was eaten away but it healed and I fully recovered. Definitely scary and dumb.

Lead acid do not want to be discharged. Do not run them low if you can avoid it. If you use it, charge it. A light float charge is good for them. Look at car batteries, they run a starter motor that runs for 2 seconds then they recharge. Deep cycle are they same chemistry with basically thicker plates to deal with deep cycling. They don't like it, but they can do it. Keep them charged and keep water in them.
@matthewmeneses8459
@matthewmeneses8459 Год назад
I have to disagree, I work for a battery company and we were taught the best for v force deep cycle batteries are too bring them to about 20-30% discharge and than let them get a full recharge for the best bang for your buck, that’s straight from the manufacture to. With that being said yes keep them watered.
@stokesandrew100
@stokesandrew100 Год назад
@@matthewmeneses8459 oh yeah, that's the way to get the most use out of them. What I'm saying is using them at all shortens their life. The best life they can live is a slow float charge without ever being discharged. But then there's no point to the battery. Discharging them shortens their life but that's what they're for. You don't need to discharge them 30% but it's probably the way to get the most use out of them.

I knew one of the owners of one of them and he would pay me to come out and maintain his property mainly his generator and his battery banks because everything is off grid up there.I would do some plumbing or painting or whatever else too. But because I had keys and access and knew where everything was, other people who lived in the same area this guys neighbors started calling me to have me do the same thing sometimes they would want me to work on their little zodiac boat outboards or whatever too. I basically paid my way through college doing that. Everybody was willing to pay a bunch of money because you had to go work up in the mountains Bring all your own tools and not be supervised and to be honest people that own lakefront vacation homes have money to spend apparently. I used to go up there every month and just check everybody’s batteries, they all kind of liked it because I go up check the batteries make sure the house hadn’t flooded or burned down (one guys did flood that was bad another guys was hit with a tree). Every once in a while somebody will buy a house up there and they’ll see my invoices and they’ll call me, It’s not economically feasible for me to do the work anymore but I do know a guy so good times

Those 100 amp load testers are nothing better than a hand warmer. Batteries are to be tested at half their CCA rating, meaning if it is rated at 100 CCA you need to test it at 500 amps. If the battery does indeed fail a 100 amp test it is 100% degective. A 12 volt battery rated at 1000 amps sould not drop below 10.5 volts with a 500 amp load for 15 seconds. FYI, going on 30 years repairing HVAC, refrigeration, generators and electrical systems on commercial fishing vessels and large yachts with 24, 32 and 48 volt DC systems. AC systems are 220 to 480 volt 3 phase.

Load testing of deep cycle batteries is not a one size fits all thing. The load is different for different batteries. For accurate results always consult the manufacturer. Too many times i see people just take out the 100 amp load tester and use it on every battery they test. This is wrong. The load and duration of the load needs to tailored to the battery under test and then the result needs to be temperature corrected. Yes the result will change based on temperature of the battery.

Alright dude. The shorts were funny in the beginning, I'd personally really rather see the "day at work" mechanic stuff. That's far more interesting than some far east idiot trying to weld with a wooden stick.

Don't fully fill your empty batteries! Make sure there's maybe 80% fluid, otherwise you get acid overflowing. Also ion exchanged water is enough for batteries, it has under 10 mS conductivity, tap water starts from over 100!

It's such a shame that your long videos don't get nearly as much views as the quick snarky shorts (not that I don't find them amusing but it's just reacting to intentionally poor content)

I’m okay with it. Most of my subs came from Shorts so it makes sense.

Your "opportunistic charging" advice goes against all the literature.
