ATTENTION - If you are getting an ERROR when you are trying to ANALYZE about Python ... It's because the subtitle files are not encoded in UTF-8, to fix this: Open the subtitle files in Notepad and Save As, then select Encoding: UTF-8 in the Save As dialog. Hope this helps :)
Really appreciate these videos! I have some more semi-unrelated questions for when/if you have time. 1. Did Matt make his own version of the Tango decks and you used those instead of Nukemarines ones? If so, what is the difference between them? Do you need to buy patreon to get them? I'm about to start the N3 Tango deck. I noticed that for Nukes N3 deck, the note type has changed and hes added some information about pitch that was not in the N4 or N5 decks... ? 2. For a lot of words or grammar things.. like.. 'bakari', they can have many different usages. So, will morphman just see you've learned one sentence with 'bakari' and then say you've learned it? Has that caused any issues for you? 3. When you gave up on your original RTK deck, what did you do with it? Did you just delete it, or suspend all the cards, or? Since I started using Anki I have tried a lot of different types of decks along the way and now my total collection has become a mess. For example, because I tried core 2k before the Tango books and I didn't know about morphman, I now have many learned cards for the same words from both of those two decks, so now that I am installing morphman I'm thinking about how I should cleanse my collection. Just wondering what your opinion about it would be. 4. Are your sub2srs cards reading only or do you make listening versions the same as the Tango decks have?
1. Matt's and Nukes decks are based off the same spreadsheet made by one guy named CalculusAce, They are the same exact deck except Matt's deck doesn't have listening cards and he skipped a bit of stuff. You don't need to be a patreon of either person to get their deck you just need to prove you own the book. However yes they use different note types. 2. If you use morphman with unidic, this isn't as much of an issue. It hasn't been an issue for me I just look up stuff when I don't fully get it. 3. I deleted it, and I deleted the card type from anki and stuff. most of my cards run off of 3 different card types, whenever I install a new deck, I switch the new cards over to one of those card types. 4. I only make reading cards with subs2srs because I immerse with the shows that I study with morphman.

Big video! Massive update! Interesting concept that you explained. As I remember you mentioned it on a previous video but what I took from it is knowing how the readability analyser works which is great for knowing where you are at. Cheers!
Like morphman is trying to give you those cards? It's totally normal of you have those words somewhere else in your deck but they are written in hiragana. Just hit that K button for words you already know.
Hi great video, I just want to point it out that your master frequency list isnt effecting the readability, look at the first line in the report there says Master morphs loaded: K 0 V 0.
If you are using a pre-made Subs2SRS deck, what would you specify as the input directory when doing the readability analysis? I can acquire a set of subtitle files, but there's no guarantee that those specific files match the ones used to make the pre-made Subs2SRS deck. I'm planning on using pre-made Subs2SRS decks, so is there a way to utilize the deck itself as an input for a deep dive?
Not that I know of, however if your deck doesn't match the subs for the show then it's probably a bad deck. I usually just make my own decks but I have had no issues with pre made decks and subs that I downloaded separately. I guess if you wanted could export a deck as a CSV file, open it in a spread sheet, copy all the text out and save it as a text file, but that would be a lot of work and a big pain and it would be hard to separate episodes and stuff.
How do you handle frequency weighting since it's changing all the time? Right now I'm using the Netflix frequency as my frequency list so my weight is really low because of the MIA suggestion of changing the frequency weight based on list size. Is there a setting you recommend since this method has a more fluid frequency list size?
The newest version of morphman created by nocompo makes frequency weighting a non issue, because it scans each episode of the show by frequency in and out of the show using a full freq list and a lot of cool code.
Great video! I’m immersing and adding new cards every day. I had no idea there were so many add ons and other ways to do it! I’m sure this is a redundant question but are there videos going into detail about what (other than Anki) to download? This video was super helpful. but where do you get all the subtitles and everything else to add into your anki?

You don't ever need to use morphman it just makes the process quicker and easier. After RTK many people suggest doing the Tango N5 and N4 books, and then after those moving on to sentence mining. Look up the MIA start guide or check out some of my earlier videos for that. Those decks are distributed my Nukemarine or Matt Vs Japan after you buy the book(s). I don't give them out.
Anyone here getting an error when restarting anki after installing morph man? I've tried changing the stats.py code from reddit and the problem is still not fixed. Any fixes for this? I'm using anki v2.1.14 for reference.
Force morphman to add pictures to it? That's not what morphman does. You could use the MIA dictionary addon to add pictures to it. If your question was could you use morphman to make a deck based off anime using the words in the N5 tango deck then the answer is yes, but the whole point of the tango decks is they are premade because sentence mining is very difficult in the beginning.
This is not entirely related to this video but would you recommend starting to use a lot of sentence banks, morphman etc. at around a 7th month period? I've hard a really hard time deciding personally when to start it since I couldn't truly grasp when the program would be super beneficial since I still have a hard time understanding it's true function. I've been making all my own flashcards for this 7 month period (thank god for being a student) but I really want to improve how many I can make. Sorry if this is a weird question/a bit off-topic but you seem to be well versed in the program. Thanks again.
How long you have been studying has nothing to do with it because everyone progresses at different paces, but if you are already sentence mining from the wild and you are done with whatever traditional study materials then yes this could be a great tool for you to use.
Hey I'm having a small issue, when I press L and decide to change to a new card, I do ctrl+shift+s like you said, reposition it as 1, aaaand it doesnt work, it still shows whatever the other card was. Any ideas?
@@ohtalkwho9816 turns out the issue was that I had cards in subdecks rather than all straight in the parent deck. Morphman was always prioritising the first deck haha. Moved everything into a subs2srs deck, no sub decks, and now it works perfectly
Question. You mentioned toward the end of your video (26:30) that you learn your new cards sometimes before you do your backlog reviews. How do you set that up? With my current Anki settings it won't let me learn any new cards until I've finished all of my reviews first.
Sorry you misunderstood me. You should always do your reviews before new words, new words are secondary to your initial reviews, and your reviews are secondary to your immersion. You shouldn't do you new words first. What I said was I do the secondary review of my new words later in the day after I have finished selecting my new cards for the day. If you have standard settings there is usually a 10 min delay between when you see a new card and when you see it a second time, I just wait longer than 10 minutes a lot of the time.

Yeah I always do my review cards to full each day regardless but sometimes you are just in the mood to learn new cards first before reviewing your old ones so I thought there might be an option to do them early but I guess not. I have my settings so that when I learn a new card it doesn't show up til the next day anyways so I don't ever really worry about seeing it again that day.
You can't use the add-ons on your phone but you can still do all your reps on your phone. I use my phone for reps everyday and then just do my new words on my computer which is the only time morphman is needed.
Awesome video! I put this of until I was ready to actually rep my mined sentences but I haven't figured it out yet. I see when you create a card, you just put it at the front of the deck. My question is how is Morphman not reorganizing them after you create them? Also, how do you pick up where you left off mining? Right now I have my mined sentences in another deck, but I can't get that 'pick up where I left off/ pick up where I should be after recalc" if its in a different deck. Thanks in advance!
First you should watch my other video on setting up your first deep dive. The whole point of morphman is to reorganize cards based on frequency, in an I+1 order. So if you have a deck that's already in the order that you want it to be such as tango don't use Morphman on it.
@@ohtalkwho9816 Thanks for the reply! I should clear up the fact that I was going through N4 and getting this set up on the side, so Morphman is NOT touching my N4-5 decks. Just finished the other video and things are looking wrong on my end. If I even bump up my minimum frequency to 1, all my numbers go to 0 (To study morphs, cumulative) and my percentages of course change because of it. I tested this problem with other frequency lists, and it still happens.
@@ohtalkwho9816 Thanks, I've definitely got it set up to look at Tango, but not touch it. I went ahead and decided to just try some cards out the same way you do in the video, and things look like they're working pretty well so far besides the readability stuff I mentioned. Im going to jump in tomorrow after today's reps and see if any more questions arise. Can you point me in the direction to edit the CSS for the hidden focus morph?
my problem is that i have a lot of animes with english subtitles encoded.. how can i fix this? download all over again as raw episodes? is it possible to reencode the japanese subtitle?
Like they have hard subs? What I usually do with those is Subs2srs has a function to cut off the bottom of an image when making decks. This way hard subs don't show up on your Anki cards. Similarly VLC player has a function where you can hide any number of pixels at the bottom of a video file while it's playing.

You could use premade decks from this site: japanesedecks.blogspot.com/p/free.html?m=1 Or you could retire the subtitles yourself with a program called Aegisub. I go over the process of making Subs2srs decks from start to finish in one of my videos.
Interesting concept! The idea is definitely not new, but incorporating MorphMan into it is a cool twist! I might use some of these ideas and incorporate it into my own thing. I have a question, though. How do you go about studying the words in the study plan? It looks like you have put all your anime cards in one and the same folder, so you're not even going to be studying cards from the anime you're doing a deep dive with. Or does MorphMan focus those words and only give you cards with the study plan words, even if the cards are from a different anime? I was wondering, MIA's MorphMan guide has a 20k frequency list based on Netflix's subtitles. Is that the one you put together? Or maybe that one is something Yoga made since he was the one who pulled the data from Netflix. Also, are you sure the way you have MorphMan set up works? It ignores all rows with the same note type beyond the first, so it might be that it's not checking the second SGJL - JLPT Tango and SGJL - JLPT Tango 2 rows in in your note filter setup. Lastly, I wasn't aware that you made the monolingual transition! Congrats! When did you do it?
