Funnel shows users that followed a path: For ex., how many users visit home page (200), out of those users, how many add to cart (30), out of those users, how many add payment method (10), out of those users, how many purchase (2). Cohort shows user-group that is returning based on the the cohort-criteria and return-criteria specified by the analyst over time. For ex. metric (values): "active users" cohort-criteria - "add_to_cart" event return-criteria - "purchase" event In Week 0 - 3000 active users triggered the "add_to_cart" event In the following week (Week 1), 280 of those users triggered the "purchase" event In the following week (Week 2), 50 of the users in the previous, Week 1, again triggered the "purchase" event (again, this depends on which calculation you use - standard, rolling or cumulative (support.google.com/analytics/answer/9670133#cohort-calculation&zippy=%2Cin-this-article) For cohort, the term "over a time period" is important since it shows retention/monetization over a daily, weekly or monthly period rather a funneling into a particular event/page_path.
