This was one of your best episodes due to your difficulties. I've watched your channel for years and hiked Utah with my 10 year old son based on your videos and recommendations. Over 3 trips I almost knocked my son over a cliff with my backpack, got caught in multiple lightning storms that bent the tent poles to our faces, and had to pin my brother in law to the slick rock to keep him from falling into an inescapable water hole near Neon Canyon. It's good to point out the risks of these trips and this episode did just that! Keep em coming!

Hey Mike! We fish out of Hatteras, NC and just wondering if you think we could use the same techniques up here as yall do down there. What kind of bottom do you look for on the screen and what time of year do you think we would have best success?

i tried this on Wed. this week just north of hillsboro (about 400 ft of water), I just caught 2 of these snake looking things. I only had time for 1 drop as the storms were rolling in, but was impressed with how I could feel the bite with the braid. will try again next week.
@FloridaSportFishing
@FloridaSportFishing 10 лет назад
Hi Gregory, yes, you will occasionally catch those eel-like snakes. While they are slimy and wrap up your rigs, they do make decent bait as the tilesfish eat them. I rarely use them for bait, but the will work. Make sure to try between 420-430 feet, thats the "hot zone" when the bite is on. - Let me know if I can help in any other way. - Capt Mike

Hey Capt Mike, what type of pliers do you wear on your hip? I normally use the brand Forever Last pliers. I like them because they are made of aluminum and don't rust but they tend to bend a little when enough pressure and twist is applied. They are also great when cutting braid. ---Zeke A
@FloridaSportFishing

Hi Zeke and thanks for watching. Nowadays, I use/wear Van Staal pliers. I like the small 5-inch titanium models. They are expensive, but will last a lifetime. - Capt Mike

When you're looking for these fish do you drop on flat areas or are you looking for some kind of relief and bottom change
@FloridaSportFishing

+Silvio Gonzalez Looking for a muddy bottom, tilefish prefer mud over rock. - Capt Mike
@spearhog03

+Florida Sport Fishing would mud bottoms have any kind of contour or would it usually just be flat
@FloridaSportFishing

@FloridaSportFishing
@FloridaSportFishing 8 лет назад
+qle123456 Look for mud bottom with a slight slope. Try a drift in 400, 425, then 450 etc until you find them. - Capt Mike

Are the numbers for these tile grounds public numbers and can you catch them year round pretty consistently?
@FloridaSportFishing
@FloridaSportFishing 9 лет назад
Michael Cancilla Pretty consistent year round when conditions are good, sunny days with clear skies, 1.0-2.0 knots of current. Tend to see larger fish in the winter months with lots of smaller ones throughout the summer. - Thanks for watching. - Capt Mike

ok real quick questions - I know you are getting away with 12oz but will this rod hold up to 24-36oz just as well? I am looking to match a rod to the new Avet JX6.0.and I'm fishing the norther waters, New Jersey canyons mostly.
@FloridaSportFishing
@FloridaSportFishing 8 лет назад
+Joshua Webster I have fished up to 32 oz. with little problem, but wouldn't recommend going heavier with this particular 8'0" rod. - Capt Mike

@FloridaSportFishing

Hi Gregory, yes they do but you will typically catch the larger fish during the winter months. Remember it is all about conditions/current. If you can achieve a proper presentation, you should do well. - Capt Mike

Good one Cap'n Mike. Ever any by catches that deep? Just curious. Later sir.
@FloridaSportFishing
@FloridaSportFishing 10 лет назад
Over the last 15 years catching these things from Ft Lauderdale to Boca, the only by-catch has been a few bluefish, a few AJs, and a few bank seabass. This is primarily because we are specifically fishing in the mud rather than rock/reef. I know some guys have also caught some snowy grouper with the tiles in 400-500 ft, I have not been so lucky. Of course, way out in the Gulf, we catch all sorts of stuff with the grays, that is just the deal here along the southeast coast. - Thanks for watching - Capt Mike.

Hi can you please help me! I'm going on the dry tortugas trip but I don't know what rod to buy.
@FloridaSportFishing
@FloridaSportFishing 9 лет назад
+carter boroski Ideal rod would be 8'0" rated for 20-40 lb line. Something light and comfortable but with enough backbone to handle grouper/mutton snapper. - Capt Mike

@FloridaSportFishing
@FloridaSportFishing 9 лет назад
+carter boroski you have a couple options, however I would call Chaos Rods in Pompano. Tell them you need a 20-40 lb. class, 8'0" mutton snapper/grouper rod. Keep the weight of the rod to a minimum. - Capt Mike

How do you find mud bottom, i fish out of hillsboro
@FloridaSportFishing
@FloridaSportFishing 8 лет назад
Certain charts reveal bottom composition, plus you can tell from intensity of echo on sounder. Out if Hillsboro, there is PLENTY of mud between 400-500 ft all up/down the coast. - Capt Mike

Good God, 450' of water? I have fished the Gulf and the Outer Banks, but you see land from your Boat. I know in the Outer Banks we have to go about 15+ miles off shore to hit only about 200 -280' to hit Tiles and from Panama City Beach a billion miles out to hit 90' it seems? I'm shocked in Boca you drop to 400+ and can see the shore. Learn something everyday I guess :)

We catch some big goldens here as well, 10-30 pounds. Sadly though, not as consistent as the bluelines and too deep to hand crank in over 1000 feet with 4-5 knots of current and 10 pounds of lead. We also catch some really big bluelines (8-10 pounds) out in the Gulf, you'll see those in coming episodes. Thanks for watching. - Capt Mike
