We’re always experimenting with tuning approaches and new sounds and one of the latest has been achieving uniquely low, fat tom sounds...with really small drums. The depth (or lack of) of rack toms actually makes this a bit easier than using deeper, often square sized (same diameter x depth) toms.
While this 10” and 12” tom might not sound quite like a 13” and 16”, they’re at least in range for what you’d expect out of a 12” and 14”. While they help provide a fatter tone than you would likely achieve given the same tuning on larger drums, they don’t have nearly as much projection, though that might not be an issue if you’re a belt to have everything close mic’d.
