Burn is by far my favourite DP song, Ian Paice is a monster on those drums. I first saw Ian with Gary Moore and he was incredible, I later got to see him with Purple a few times, Legendary. Blackmore has long been one of my favourite guitarists.
Ian Paice = one of the most underrated drummers in rock history. You should hit 'Lazy' or "Space Truckin'. The former is super tight and bluesy, the latter major showcase from the previous singer (Child in Time vocalist) and my man Paice.
Incorrect Ben, Ian Paice is HIGHLY regarded in the Drummer world, Pro and non-pro alike! And has been since the early 70's. I saw him/them first in '75 and plenty of times since including fairly recently. He STILL kicks ass!! He has excellent technique and showmanship!
@@rickbriefs8712 Nope, disagree. Paice not even in top 20 on Rolling Stone's or Drumeo's top 100 drummer's list, behind the likes of Ringo, Watts and Collins. Rarely comes up in lay conversations for top 5 rock drummer. Drummer myself years ago and def think he deserves more props
David Coverdale replaced Ian Gillan on vocals and Glenn Hughes replaced Roger Glover on bass. They recorded 3 albums with Coverdale & Hughes. Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore left after the 2nd album and formed Rainbow with the members of Elf, minus their guitarist, which included Ronnie James Dio on vocals. Dio did 3 albums with Rainbow, joined Black Sabbath, did 2 albums with Sabbath, then went solo as Dio with former Rainbow bandmate bassist Jimmy Bain, Black Sabbath bandmate drummer Vinny Appice & Vivian Campbell on guitar of Def Leppard. After Dio left Black Sabbath, Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan recorded the album Born Again with Black Sabbath. David Coverdale recorded 2 solo albums after Deep Purple then formed Whitesnake which included Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord on the first 6 Whitesnake albums and Deep Purple drummer on 3 Whitesnake albums. Then Deep Purple reunited with the classic lineup of Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Roger Glover, Jon Lord & Ian Paice.
Steven, you're right, I was going to but it was only one album and I didn't think he or most others would have known him either. I also left out Glenn Hughes leaving Trapeze to join Deep Purple and that Trapeze drummer Dave Holland would then join Judas Priest. Also, Glenn Hughes recording an album with Black Sabbath and playing in Black Country Communion & California Breed with Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham's son Jason Bonham. I'm like rain man, I just keep going. I gotta stop myself LOL 😂
Very cool, I wish. I would love to have seen Ian Gillan in his prime. I never saw Ritchie Blackmore live. I was born in 1975. I have every studio album, some live and a. compilation. Gillan is in my top 5 favorite bands. They deserve more credit than they get. Ian Paice is never mentioned in drummer conversations and he should be. I'll take Blackmore over Page & Iommi.
This is Deep Purple with David Coverdale (from Whitesnake) as lead singer. Ian Gillan had left the group for a few years before returning. Roger Glover, bassist, had also left. So, the bassist here and 2nd singer is Glenn Hughes. The live concert in California is mad. One of my favourites. You previously heard Stormbringer also with David Coverdale on lead vocals
Eddie Van Halen said this (Burn by Deep Purple) along with, Into the Void (Black Sabbath), Sunshine of Your Love (Cream), and Down Payment Blues (AC DC) are his favorite riffs of all time
Brother Jay, excellent reaction as usual! This song is EVEN BETTER Live!! Check out their performance of this song ( and many others!..) from " California Jam '74", a huge outdoor concert for many years. They KILL!!! To see Coverdale & Hughes trading harmonies and Ian's drumming and Ritchie's Guitar playing is awesome!! Thanks for being a cool dude!
Favalbum, full with joy of play.... dunno the words but what he do on drums is highly skilled, it's almost impossible to put in such small crazy bits in middle oi whats already goes on and dont interrupt the pace and with that clean perfection
Thanks for reacting to this awesome song! You guys need to remind the following: Burn was recorded in 1974 so almost 50 years ago. And yet, when you listen to to this track, you could think that it was recorded the past decade maybe. Deep Purple were pioneers really. I am not sure that all materials will age that well in 50 years.
Hey man, great reaction as always. What a great '70s classic hard rock tune. The coolest parts for me are the amazing drumming during the verses, and the fact that it's a one-word chorus! Rock on brother 🤘
I was twelve years old when my older brother's best friend introduced need to this album. This was the first hard rock album that I ever fell in love with. Absolutely life changing.
That's pièce of history. They are all top great musicians, they really rock. Blackmore is a riff master. Please do their live performances. "The battle rages on" , "Perfect strangers " "Child in time" and so on. 🔥🤘🏻
Late to this party but this is the best reaction to this song I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a bunch of them. Thanks as always, Jay. You totally appreciated it. I think you’re right about the Salem witch trials lyrics analysis. In your list of favorite Deep Purple, don’t forget the one you did on a livestream I sent, “you keep on moving“. I remember you really liked that one also.
Ian Pace is up there with Ginger Baker and Stuart Copeland as far as drummers go. He also was in Rainbow with same guitarist and Ronnie James Dio. Richie blackmore is one of the best guitarists of alltime.
Some more deep purple tunes for your inventory I think you might enjoy, in no particular order: Rat Bat Blue; Bloodsucker; Gettin’ Tighter; Drifter; Dealer; Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming; You Fool No One; Lay Down Stay Down - phenomenal drumming on that one; No One Came; Might Just Take Your Life; Loosen My Strings; Fingers to the Bone.
I like this...really like this. The subject could refer to the older times, like the Dark Age, 13th to 15th Century...when women in England were burned if found guilty of certain crimes...and it happened...it really did happen. I don't think it's Salem based....but that's a very cool thought to say maybe it might be a Salem event..I just don't think it is...but whatever, awesome drums, songwriting, guitars, bass....it has everything to give it a 10 for me.
This album is SO freaking good !! this could have been the end of DP. they had just put out their biggest album, then lost their singer and bassist. Most bands would not recover. They added David Coverdale on vocals and Glenn Hughes on bass and vocals. UNreal. the whole album is worth a spin!
The whole Burn album is great! Might Just Take Your Life, Lay Down Stay Down, Sail Away, You Fool No One, and of course, the very melancholy and bluesy Mistreated.
@@johnjeczalik8960 that’s fair enough, I know a lot of DP fans hold Machinehead and In Rock to be their best. Personally, I prefer Burn if anything just for the vocal harmony. After that I’d give it to Machinehead
DP was my first concert 💜 I think I've told everyone that by now.. Lol they made such an impression on me that my ears where forever geared towards this kind of music. Nothing else like it!!!! ✌😎🍀
Love that you're covering DP. You recognize truly great music and production. How is it that you have not done any Roger Waters, ELO (I'd go with Telephone from Wembley), nor any Doobie Brothers (maybe Long Train Running?). With all of those you are better to see them live because they sound essentially just as good as on the albums. Brilliant players performing complex arrangements of really clever songs. You are almost guaranteed to like it.
4:39 What your hearing is called a fifths progression. The guitarist, Ritchie Blackmore, is a classically guitarist and you often hear fifth progressions in songs from the classical and baroque eras. If you want a song that has fifths progression, I recommend reacting to Mr Crowley by Ozzy Osbourne.
More likely reverb than flanger on Glenn Hughes voice in the chorus. Flanger is more often used on guitar and sometimes on drums. Not really a vocal friendly effect. And sending the vocal from right channel to left is "panning."
Good taste bro... this is what I grew up on. Used to visit my grandfather... all his albums. The Who, Led Zep, Cream, Jimi, Purple, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Black Sabbath... so many more. Could never get into rap because of that. I need to hear REAL musicians playing Real instruments!! Subscribed Dude. 🍻🥁
I tried to play that solo, but my fingers got stuck. You had to stop cause they were doing too much. I know, this tune will wear ya out. Hell yeah. Peace
@@justineapril7922 I' ve never seen them, but I like their music since 1985. They are one of the big pioneers for the Evolution of Hard and Heavy music, and they are brilliant. Perfect Strangers was a very successful Record in 1984, but I Do more like Machine Head, Burn and Stormbringer. Lately I discovered the very first Albums from 68 to 69!
Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's wife at the time pointed out to him that the main riff for "Burn" reminded her of the jazzy"Fascinating Rhythm" (music by George Gershwin, lyrics by Ira Gershwin), written in 1924 for the Broadway musical "Lady Be Good." Eleanor Powell's tap dance routine to the Gershwin number from the Hollywood production of "Lady Be Good" is a classic. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9z5FVU34JMI.html
Mistreated off the samne album is a mighty epic & well worth checking out. Also there's a great video of Ian Paice reviewing a young girl doing a cover of his drum track ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pbt1NrUzB5Q.html
Deep Purple is at the top of many lists. Their talent surpasses many. I haven't seen any reactors react to Lazy which is my favorite song by Deep Purple. I can with a 90% probability that Lazy would be Jay's favorite or at least in the top 3 by Deep Purple. Check it out. Deep Purple - Lazy - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dqM5L5JQseI.html EXCELLENT REACTION JAY!!
