The song is best known for the version by British hard rock band Deep Purple, recorded on 21 April 1968, for their debut album Shades of Deep Purple. The song was chosen as the album's accommodating single by their American label, Tetragrammaton. It was their first hit, peaking at number 4 in the United States and number 2 in Canada, although it remained pretty overlooked in the UK.
The band re-recorded the song in 1988 to celebrate their 20 year anniversary, then with a different singer (Ian Gillan) than the original recording (Rod Evans). The newer version can be found on the album Nobody's Perfect. The 1988 version reached number 62 on the UK singles chart and number 44 on the Album Rock Tracks chart in the US.
