When this song came out in1968, I was rockin' it at the age of 11 with friends and neighbors, along with Sly & The Family Stone's "Dance to the Music" ... Oh yeah!
Those days were a blast ! Always looked forward to going to the record store. Always had limited funds as a kid so i always tried to make a good selection. I had so many of what are now considered classic rock albums. Unfortunately they were all lost in a house fire in 73. Never collected again after that.
Yep, Deep Purple loved that "church organ" sound. You have to understand that what you are hearing as classic church music sounds, at that time sounded innovative and cutting edge new.
God bless Fats Waller and Art Tatum for having the bright idea to drag the Hammond organ out of the church and into the jazz club. We owe all future organ greatness to them. If it weren't for them, we might still only be hearing this instrument behind "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" and "Rock Of Ages," or at the baseball game.
I was eight when this song was released (1968) and it's still one of my all time favorites of any genre. Your analysis was spot on. In my opinion, the line "I need her lovin' and I'm not to blame now" is his way of saying, "It's HER fault for putting me in this mess in the first place. Not mine!" Yeah, right! 😄
"She got lovin' like quicksand It only took one touch of her hand Now I'm in so deep I can't eat and I can't sleep.." Yeah man, don'tcha know. She's got him Howwwwwlin', and barking at the moon.
Best howl. Ever. Thanks for reacting to this, it always brings me back to my childhood. Riding my bike with this blasting on my AM transistor radio. Good times.
The power these dudes brought to,the table was impressive.... like a run away train wh/ can’t be stopped... never got their proper due. Prime for prime zep level intensity.
It's songs like this from my high school years that are probably responsible for my love of the Hammond B3 and the Leslie speaker. Years ago, I produced a local blues festival, and I always had a least one band that a keyboardist playing a B3. I'm still a sucker for that sound. However, my stagehands that had to move these heavy organs were not as enthusiastic as me about it, lol.
Luckily, newer electronics can copy the B3 sound pretty well in much lighter packages, and they're getting close on the Leslie vibrato sound, too. The moving/undulating sound of an accelerating or braking Leslie rotor is almost orgasmic. I can relate to your enthusiasm!
When my dad played bass in a wedding/event cover band, I always told him this should be the last song. Let everyone in the band take their ride while the party dances, and leave everyone ready to KEEP IT GOING in the hotel!!! This is the good shit, and I'm a fan of all Deep Purple!!
One of the things I love about your videos, Jamel, is that it's not just feeling the music and letting us all experience the love for these great tunes again through your eyes (and ears), but that you also have a powerful message that you deliver in so many of your post-song reactions - love each other, and love & respect yourself. Which so many people need to hear (including me, from time to time).
Hi Jamel... Rod Stewart and The FACES.. Check out their live versions of "Maybe I'm amazed" AND "Stay with me"..... GREAT Band and Rod Stewart has one of the greatest Rock bluesy voices of that period.. Cheers mate.
The Hammond B3 organ was in just about every band back in the day. Live in a small club that thing would just carry you away. It had a spinning fan type of thing that gave it that unique sound. I love it.
the beauty of this is that he is hearing it for the FIRST time, whereas, most of us have heard it played multiple times on the radio and have ignored the true meanings/nuances
I would stand on the toilet seat in our 2nd floor bathroom and listen out the window to this coming from the hockey arena when the big kids would be having dances in the summer. I was 7 or 8 yrs old. One of my fave all-time tunes. Ingrained epic and undeniable.
Dude! Listen to Joe South's rendition! He wrote it and there is an HQ remastered edition. He's from my hometown of Atlanta, Georgia! He went to Rock n Roll Heaven in 2012! Rest in Rock Joe!
You have to listen to Lazy, Rat Bat Blue, Woman From Tokyo and Smoke On The Water (Live Version) from the Made In Japan Album by Deep Purple, you won’t be disappointed.🤩
You should also check out Maybe I’m A Leo, Never Before, Mary Long and Super Trouper (if you haven’t already), by Deep Purple, you won’t be disappointed.🤩
Maaaaaan, I been waiting a minute for you to do this one. I knew that stanky Jon Lord organ would twist ya face up! Telling you, bruh, you need some Sugarloaf, "Green Eyed Lady"; Santana, "Oye Como Va"; and Emerson Lake And Palmer, "Hoedown" (make sure it's live in Milan 1973). As a longtime Hammond organ stankface-maker myself, those are all 100% guaranteed keyboard stankface.
Deep Purple was my first concert. I was in high school and the year was 1984, the Perfect Strangers tour. John Lord on the organ was amazing. He was rocking that organ back and forth while playing the Hell out of it. He rocked it so far I was actually holding my breath thinking it would crash down on the floor, but nope...he had total control of it. Completely amazing. You need to react to Space Truckin if you haven't already.
this was sung by Rod Evans the original lead singer but was fired after 3 albums and replaced by Ian Gillan who took the band to its most successful heights.
I love this channel! you are doing the internet a huge favor!! hope you recognize the joy your giving to people. You said it, the first step is to love yourself. The comments flourish with great music and great soul, you the man!!
Bless you, sir, bless you. As a fifty-five-year-old who grew up in the sanctity of Classic Rock, Deep Purple's "Hush" is *THE GREATEST CLASSIC ROCK SONG. EVER.* John Lord's organ is the Devil and St. Augustine mixed together in one. Loved watching you hear it for the first time.
The “Na, nana na, nana na, nana naa” tune is the same as the “aaaa” tune in the middle of the Beatles “A Day in the Life” (the end of Paul McCartney’s part, “someone spoke and I went into a dream...aaaaa”. Deep Purple even slowed it down in the final few seconds of the song like the way the Beatles sing it.
Hush was Written by Joe South a bit before Deep Purple got around to covering it. Jamel you should check out and do a video of Joe's greatest ever song "Games People Play"(yeah its a deep song bro). Man if you did that one, that would be awesome!
I feel fortunate to have seen them in the 70's. I still have machine head vinyl. Still play it. I listened to the CD in the car yesterday. I wore the best of deep purple out.
A vampire atmosphere to that one. That's how I'd do the video. A vampire claiming he's not to blame for his nature and missing someone who stole his heart as part of her nature. Touché
Talking my launguage! Saw them in concert. Blackfoot Strikes album is awesome and listened to these songs more than any other aside from Straight Shooter, Bad Company. Wishing Well just an awesome song and Highway Song requested a long time ago.
Just remember "Highway Song" is a tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd if you do react. It will sound similar to them a bit because of that. "Train, Train" is a faster, more "Molly Hatchett" type sound, though NOT a copy. IMHO. I am a FL girl so have pushed Blackfoot, LS, Molly H, and T. Petty. Ha ha.
I first heard that song on AM radio before FM and we sure did not have that sound you have right now, the best was at a jukebox in a bar or a restaurant....
You got it, Jamel! I weaned on this stuff when I was a kid. My parents didn't really understand, but that was our generation. This song, in particular, took my mind and my spirit to places I've never been... and it still has the same effect today. What I didn't realize as a 10-12 yr old back then was how much the 60s music scene was influenced by the blues from decades earlier... the 60s guys just had more electricity, that's all! LOL! It's still amazing, though. From Deep Purple to the Beatles to Led Zeppelin to the Rolling Stones to a whole slew of 'em. It's an expression of soul. So glad you're doing this.
I love watching your reactions. You really do feel the music. Thanks for bringing all this great music to everyone. Some of these songs I haven't heard in a long time. Great memories and times.
