" DEEP SLEEP' ALMOST DEFIES BELIEF" THE INDEPENDENT.
Surviving patients and relatives of the deceased provide compelling testimonies in this documentary, originally made for Channel 4 TV in the UK. It's the story of one of the most scandalous episodes in the history of psychiatry - a leading Australian psychiatrist, Dr Harry Bailey, instigated an experimental program of "Deep Sleep therapy" and caused a string of deaths in an Australian hospital. The film unmasks the doctors who assisted Bailey in a cover-up of his crimes at Sydney's Chelmsford Hospital.
Produced and Directed by John Edginton.
c. Otmoor Productions Ltd 1992.

My mum died when I was 18 due to Dr Harry Bailey and haven't heard any one on here talk about the indecent assaults women endured why they were sedated 😢

Thats absolutely disgusting ...I was getting the vibe that was happening, they edged ever so slightly to it at one moment. I'm so sorry your mother endured that and lost her life at this horrid hospital with its crazy practices. So sad.

very disturbing; I wonder if this treatment was used on me in Adelaide in 1962? thank you for this enlightening documentary

@@JOHNEDGINTONDOCUMENTARIES I was admitted to St Anthony's Private Hospital in Joslyn or St Peters, suburbs in Adelaide and the name of the doctor I recall to have been Binney, but I am not certain of that - he had his consulting rooms on North Terrace, Adelaide - I was referred by my school because of a suicide attempt at the age of 18. I remember waking up and being strapped to my bed at my wrists and ankles. i calculated months later that I must have been asleep for just over a week and hospitalised for another week after regaining consciousness. I do not know the treatment I received - I was told nothing nor asked for consent. I recall being physically and chemically (an injection in my right arm whilst restrained by my parents and two nurses) coerced through the front doors of the hospital. I escaped a few hours later, was caught and then lost about a week of consciousness. Diagnosis was 'nervous breakdown'. I have tried to find out details without success.

So sorry you had to go through that obviously very traumatic experience. At such a young age too. It sounds quite similar to the Chelmsford Hospital treatment, though other draconian treatments were often used in psychiatric hospitals in the 50s and 60s too.

I saw this documentary on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's TV network in, I believe, 1993. It seared my soul as few if any other programs have ever done; but I had despaired of finding it again. Thank goodness I have now tracked it down. Years ago, circa 2011, I fell into conversation with a woman who had once had professional connections with Harry Bailey. Part of her was still clearly awestruck by his force of character. She assured me that no-one who had not seen him at his peak could guess at how charismatic he was; and she declared herself baffled at how he went so totally off the rails afterwards. I suspect that he had played her (and others like her) the way Jascha Heifetz played the violin.

Hi 🙋 I've just finished watching. I remember viewing on TV decades ago and being horrified. I still struggle to comprehend how this could happen. Mind boggling. The repeated failures at every department level that allowed that 'treatment' to continue with so many lives lost. This documentary should be more widely viewed. I hope you are proud of your achievement in making this important documentary and exposing what really happened in that dreadful place. Kind Regards🙏

I was afraid to go to any doctor for any thing but now it terrifying to think of what they do you with or without your consent. It's sad to think that people will go to their doctor for help believing that you will get the best care when all they want is your money. And to see what happens when they give you different drugs. And they have gotten away with it because no one asked questions. 😢😢😢

@@JOHNEDGINTONDOCUMENTARIES thanks John, I really love your documentaries - a lot of them leave me thinking what has happened since. One to pitch to Netflix for follow up series? If you ever need any incidental music, I’d be more than happy to help out, I’ve done a whole range of world music, synth based and orchestral sample packs.

I'm worried that in this day and age, 2023, that something similar could easily occur in the Psychiatry community.
@lanas1149

It’s harder for things like this to occur nowadays in Australia because all health services in Australia have an ethics committee that need to approve of any clinical trials and studies before they are undertaken.

I was a patient at Chelmsford because of a nervous breakdown caused by too much school study , simply I just needed a rest , however , local doctor referred my parents to Dr Zilliacous a colleague of Bailey - I had all the treatments 1972 , lucky ETC
