Something I’ve learned watching these JPL docs.. you gotta have the brains of an adult but the heart of a 6 year old..gotta be one great place to work.. I’m happy and proud for all of you

Awesome. First job out of college was here at the DSN!! Had a lot of fun. Started there when they first brought the 72m dishes online👍👍

It's good with proper nerds in presentations that really knows stuff :-) Interesting with the optical upgrade, just don't point the antenna at the sun! ;-)
@maximilian19931
@maximilian19931 2 года назад
Sun pointing is already avoided, even on RF reception. So no worry about it. Mars comms blackout to MSL and Mars 2020(perci) is mainly because of Sun interference.

Super informative from the talks to the panel. Loved it when Dr. Deutsch chuckled at his unintentional quantum joke at 1:27:30.

JPL and DSN still talking to Voyager. But the slide switcher doesn't work :) Also interesting that the speakers and most of the scientific world use the metric system, while JPL does their (otherwise great) documentaries still in imperials.
@maximilian19931

Voyagers(1/2) is currently as low bandwidth signal with 1.5 days delay, very infrequent, maybe ones a day, for a short timeframe on the DSN. So check for longer time on the tracking data.

Lower noise temperature, higher gain, narrow bandwidth, specific aperture size. Antenna gain, antenna beamwidth. Cosmic interference, path loss, radiative losses, distance losses...it all adds up. Consider a flashlight bulb being viewed from Maine, seen in California. That is the power these antennas can recover and process into usable signal and data recovery.

If you want more Infos on it, i would suggest you check out CCSDS, which is the International specifion Board, which was referenced for the standardised protocols used on DSN and similar Systems.

Can DSN be used to keep a consistent feed going even under constant motion, where multiple sites can be stringed together to collect the same feed or is the current system not able to do this?? The presentation had no info about it.

Do you considered these to be high value targets to the unlawful attack or terrorist attacks ? Do you have a self defense systems installed for each sites? Do you treat it, security-wise , like a military bases ? Can’t imagine the impacts to the spacecrafts out there if one of the site become unserviceable.

Why Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) is not used ?
@maximilian19931

It purpose is LEO data relay, as the Name say. Mostly used for rocket launch, ISS Internet access, LEO probes.

How do these signals breach the ionosphere and Van Allen radiation belt?
@aidenthehuman5921
@aidenthehuman5921 2 года назад
The ionosphere only really reflects stuff in the ~10-~150m range. The Van Allen belt is irrelevant. It's just a pocket of radiation caused by the magnetic field, radiation doesn't effect radio in a vacuum. The magnetic field doesn't effect high frequency, it really only effects very low frequency stuff.

Do Deep Space Networks have any computer protocols!?
@jonathanschenck8154
@jonathanschenck8154 3 года назад
Interruption & delay tolerant huh? I wonder how a deep space spacecraft would text our unmanned probes a bunch of bits of a message & relay a single back if that ever could happen. Eh, maybe after some new antennas than it could request for their DTN DSN like address or designation of system or computer unless it's another probe, than an AI from space could choice not to respond.
@maximilian19931
@maximilian19931 2 года назад
@@jonathanschenck8154 if closeby relay over proximity-1(ccsds 211) would be a choice, requires inter-spacecraft packet handlers on the receiver side. The other option is a long distance relay link also with packet handler. Also known as store and forward if a 3rd Probe(spacecraft) is the interconnection point.
@_TeXoN_

I you want to read about protocols you should look into CCSDS norms. The protocol to the outside often is SLE (Space Link Extension).

If you make 2 mylar discs and silver one of them nd weld the edges together you can inflate the resulting balloon in space and create a dish antenna you can use as a cheap telescope or radio antenna. As it is made of mylar its very cheap to make and you can deploy it easily in space. You might even use it for garbage collection guys!

Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view!" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the momentt ?

Shame there is a lot of misinformation in this video, I’m not going to pick on the old bloke as I have respect, but there are a lot of things he just read off paper and just repeated what someone has told him!! I know this because we were all thought the same thing, but true experience in the field will prove a lot of these myths wrong!! It’s a shame Sorry but it’s hard to listen to lies!!
