"I am Quark, son of Keldar, here to answer the challenge of D'Ghor, son of... whatever." So said the Ferengi. To a Klingon. In the High Council chambers. Quark could not have insulted the guy more if he'd dropped his trousers and slapped the guy with his wang. Many points need to go to whoever wrote that.
And it was likely part of how Quark was goading D'Ghor too. Remember his entire plan hinged on D'Ghor trying to kill him despite being unarmed and on his knees. Easier to do when your opponent is even MORE pissed off at you for forgetting his name (or knowing you did it on purpose to goad him) Because think about it: Why would Quark, a savvy business man who runs a bar and black market businesses, forget a name?
Excellent episode that fleshes out the klingons and Quark at the same time. The showdown in the high council is a fantastic peak to the episode and Gowron gets to show us so much of his scenery chewing starey eyed madness that makes him a permanent favourite of mine. Edit: Also the Keiko closes the school subplot gives some great character building to O'Brien, Bashir and Keiko
I watched a lot of Trek initially on a small bad TV, and rewatching as an adult and discovering the joy of Gowron's expressions was a delight. This guy, this scenery-chewing guy. 😀
Quark: "As I am such a despicable worm to a Klingon, they is dishonor in killing me." Gowron: "No despicable worm could act as a courageous as that. It is no longer dishonorable to kill you." Quark: "For the love of latinum".
@mjbull5156 SFDebris has a good analysis of this actually. The Klingons viewed trusting klingon honour to the point of facing death without any weapon and not fleeing was very honourable. Digor(?)'s mistake was in trying to kill Quark directly. If he'd told Quark "withdraw the accusation and I won't need to kill you" he probably could have killed Quark 'honourably'
I love O'Brian for this episode. It was great B story. Genuine character moments and brought a fair enough plot consequence. No more having to say O'Brian's wife is out just because the studio didn't book the actress for this episode.
Quark's explanation of fiscal impropriety to the Klingon High Council is matched only by the Klingon High Council's reaction to Quark's explanation of fiscal impropriety. Fantastic reaction shots from all concerned.
This episode really shows off DS9's greatest strength: Writing an ensemble instead of Captain & co. like the other shows. Stuff that happens to the non- Starfleet Hero characters is just as important as what Sisko gets up to and that's amazing

I love it when Trek is able to cast actors who had been in TOS, especially the ones with notably distinctive voices. I think Ruskin was also a Cardigan in the shadows passing on Obsidian Order intel to Odo, or at least supplied the voice as we couldn't get a clear view of his mug. Also, did nobody on the station notice that Quark and then Rom went missing? Did they care? Also, also, when characters in sci-fi need to get from point A to point B in less time that it would normally take them for sake of the story that means they took a shortcut through a plot hole.
I absolutely loved Voyager, but the static location of Deep Space Nine offered many opportunities to learn more about the various cultures involved. During the course of DS9, we got deep dives into the background, politics, and beliefs of the Ferengi, Cardassian, Bajoran, and several other cultures. From learning about the Ferengi rules of acquisition in detail, to the way that the prophets interact with (and sometimes manipulate) the Bajoran people, to the relationship between the Cardassian public, military, civil government, and Obsidian Order, the fact that the show takes place in a single location - and the writers took advantage of it - really is one of the things that made it truly great.
one of my personal faves. the A-plot manages to make finances and honour interesting and funny, and the b-plot shows great character growth from everyone involved.
In fairness, Quark might be ugly to us but he might be attractive to other aliens. There are plenty of humans who are touted as attractive that I don't get, while other people I think are very attractive are called "mid".
He is also a bartender. He constantly meets new people and unlike startfleet doesn’t have to worry about conflicts of interests as much. As he has no official position of power.
@@bryancorrell3689 Besides, I think it makes sense from a cultural perspective. Brothers being to the same house, with the elder brother leading the house.
Yup, I completely misread this when I watched it. I'd assumed "D'Ghor is no brother to Kozak" was a disowning rather than a literal statement. From that initial error, I'd figured the bit about family feuds for generations to be an indicator that their dad did sexytimes with the enemy. Completely on me for see more than was there. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
This is my favourite Quark episode bar none. It shows how he has his own ethics, weird as they might seem, and he's smart enough to understand other cultures and how to work within them. He's genuinely a good man in this story and his confrontations with D'Ghor are GLORIOUS.
Neat to learn all the Trek series that actor was in. On relationships I think I always felt Bashir, and probably Dax too, have had off-screen relationships that are just not important enough to their characters to get into. (Jadzia even talks about going on, unseen by us, dates with various odd aliens that Kira finds peculiar.)

Big-eared short guy with nasty teeth, a barnacled nose and a head shaped like a butt. He's adorable! Also, I didn't know Deep Space Nine went on this long. Clearly, there's a lot of episodes I'm going to need to watch, one of these days.
They don't just turn their back on Kozak, he faces discommodation, meaning he has lost everything, all his assets are seized by the empire, he and his sons for 3 generations will be shamed, the name of Kozak is a curse. There are of course wider consequences of the confiscation of Kozaks property, but that's maybe for another time on a deeper discussion on Klingon society at large.
Trek doing comedy is usually hit and miss, but how funny is Quark trying to talk Gowron and the Klingon High Council through D'Ghor's accounting scheme?
I have consistently thought Kira calling Quark a troll, and shivering at Jadzia's friendship with him/other Ferengei, was not related to his behavior, but his appearance (height and looks, and similarity to troll dolls), this makes it racist and the writers should have recognized it as such. We can't blame McCoy's treatment of Spock, and let Kira and others get away with it. We see interspecies romance all the time. Often the men are, out of universe, unconventionally attractive (Worf and Troi, Neelix and Kes, Worf and Jadzia...which I would argue only occurred because she was leaving the show). I'm sure ST, outside universe, wants to cast hot women. That causes this issue. However, in very few cases (any?) other than Quark is similar wording as "troll" used or are characters referred to by their physical characteristics in a derogatory way. By you calling this out vs it being normal 400 years hence and giving the writers credit (writers/producers who nearly exclusively cast black MALE actors, unless heavily made up like Worf, with black wives, a Hollywood standard), your out of universe comment needs further exploration.
