The HMS Southwold is one of Malta's 'Heritage Wrecks', an actual casualty of WWII that can only be dived with a specific permit. Chances to explore this wreck don't come along every day, and here is an impression of the wreck's bow section.
Watch all the way to see the bow lying on its starboard side. You'll also get an idea of the damage that was done when this destroyer hit a mine in 1942.
What do you need to dive her? You will need to be qualified to dive to normoxic trimix depths. Of course, the wreck can be dived open circuit, but you will get more bottom time to explore this section of the wreck on CCR. Out of the 12 divers on the boat, 8 were diving rebreathers, including the Kiss Sidewinder (yes, that was me), rEvo, AP Inspiration, JJ, and Hollis units.
We dived with Kevin Vella and Calypso Charters Malta. Thanks to Dora Farkas of Technical Diving Training for organising.
