Lama Tsomo teaches us the ancient Tibetan compassion practice of Tonglen, one of the Four Boundless Qualities practices that we use, to grow our capacity for feeling the truth of our deep, loving connection with everyone. Following this simple practice online, we can take it into our daily lives, both on and off the cushion. It is an antidote to isolation and, an antidote to othering … and so, a perfect medicine for these times.
Lama Tsomo is an American lama, author, and co-founder of the Namchak Retreat Ranch, an organization dedicated to sharing Tibetan Buddhist meditation practices. Born into a Midwestern Jewish household, she followed a path of spiritual inquiry and study that ultimately led to her ordination as one of the few American lamas in Tibetan Buddhism. After a decade of practice, she became fluent in Tibetan and now teaches students in the U.S. and abroad. She is particularly passionate about reaching young people and supporting those working for positive social change. Fascinated by science from an early age, Lama Tsomo often weaves research findings into her candid and humorous teachings. She holds an M.A. in Counseling Psychology and is the author of the award-winning book Why Is the Dalai Lama Always Smiling? An Introduction and Guide to Tibetan Buddhist Practice.
Science and Nonduality is a community inspired by timeless wisdom, informed by cutting-edge science, and grounded in direct experience. We come together in an open-hearted exploration while celebrating our humanity.

Her voice is peaceful and sweet. "We breathe in those dark clouds from every person in this room, right into our hearts and we breathe out the joyful glowing clouds from the whole ocean being that is pure love, pure joy and pure passion so we don't see their suffering no more."

Sat Nam I disagree in that we have to transmute other people's darkness, through our facet, what ever that might be. However it has been my process to engulf them in the pure unconditional love, non-judgement shine a light and perhaps reveal to them the darkness They need to transmute. Maybe you are in a much deeper level than I Am right now Beloved. All Light, Love and Grace to you. TY

I highly recommend the practice of the Brahmavihara's (projection of Compassion and etc) ON THEIR OWN for quite awhile before at all bringing the Tonglen (Suffering absorption) element in. In traditional training, one will have a grasp of "Emptiness" (Sunyata, not a vacuum) that makes you unsticky to suffering lets say that is absorbed so it gets resolved. However, without a nonconceptual experience of emptiness, there is real danger that those who are psychic sensitivity or the power to move energy will not merely move the psychological factors but activate the energies as they really exist in the shared "Mind". This will cause the person to literally absorb those energetic elements of suffering of other people and it WILL SUCK A LOT if not able to be transformed within the very same session. Besides nonconceptual experience of emptiness, compassion and strong attention are what really help things along as well as "positive self-conception" in the sense of recognizing ones own Buddha or if you prefer "Divine" nature. Inotherwords, one need not be a Buddhist per se but must have a few of these in an analogous system. One might be a Christian, Hindu, Jew, and still be able to perform this sort of thing safely. Ex: Re Christianity -> Crucifixion anyway? So overall Tonglen is not a beginner practice and it has real consequences for some misperformers. In the manner that a misperformed physical exercise can cause sprained ankles lets say! (its more for the intermediate student, not precisely advanced as there are meditations and states far more difficult - some building off the initial Tonglen to deeper levels of practice if you like!) So perhaps you will say "Ah but this video is by a Ordained Lama" and who are you. Fair enough as I will not prove any bona fides YET If you find doing this exercise as described that you feel like crap, now you know why and don't feel bad for letting up the gas a bit and doing something else. :)
