Great presentation. This has been very educational for me as a new rider. I like the idea of customized brake levers. That seems important for riders of different hand sizes. Function is priority.

I just ordered a front MT5e brake system from Jude at Magura. He was very helpful in helping me find the right brakes, rotor and mounting adaptor. Also, due to my hand issues, they are customizing the length of the hydraulic line for me, which they don't normally do. Thanks to Jude and Matt for their efforts. Now, let's just hope it all fits on my Juiced Ripcurrent S. Should be here in a few weeks.

I purchased 3 magura mt5e calipers two years ago and one was for spare...bleeding these buggers is not easy but when done correctly they are magic....for those wanting to share my knowledge.beware that Magura sell two different e bike blades...open or closed set up...check your System prior purchase.I use Mt5 on the rear with a 160 rotor and twin pads and 180 rotor on the front but with 4 kevlar pads (like the mt7 configuration) on the front.The braking is awesome just like on my sons BMW motorbike.. prior to Magura I had Chinese..Taiwanese..Japanese brakes and nothing comes close...my only quibble are the bleed screws on the handles which are easily damaged...but with one on top and bottom and they eventually come out when you use the elastic band trick....otherwise great product.

@@oggoblin295 No mods needed. Maybe just a zip tie behind the rubber nut cover to keep it from moving since the back of the lever rubs it a little. You can see it here: instagram.com/p/B4IhFRnnuVO/?igshid=lan33uwyz72a BTW, you don't need the spring from the stock lever either. It's a quick swap. You're gonna love the feel of the levers. My brakes failed halfway down a 2.5 mile hill (average grade of about 12%, steeper in parts) due to overheating....used my shoes jammed against the rear tire to get to the bottom safely - had to buy new ones because of the deep grooves cut in them! As I was new to disc brakes, I had NO idea that the fluids had to be changed regularly. 🤦🏼‍♂️ Been running 11 year old Magura Marta SLs and am upgrading this weekend to MT5 - can’t wait to try them out!

I learned a lot from watching this. The rep knows his stuff, obviously. I swapped to Magura brakes this season, did the proper break in routine and I am very impressed by how well they feel in use. Never a noise, always predictable and a lot of stopping power. Only thing is my back brake lever has a small "dead zone" one the first pull. Second pull and it's fine. Probably something gone wrong during installation.

Love such a technical talk myself being an engineer. People not technical sometimes have no clue minor details can make a big difference! Got very good experience with MT7, best brakes I had having quite vast experience on DH and Enduro bikes BUT with original rotors. On Sram rotors although 220 they didnt perform really well, whereas with oem Storm 203 on the front very well. Now got Bruni's levers and 220 mm MDR-P rotors front and rear, as for DH rear is hack an important brake and hope this ends my ultimate break set search for a long time.

Jude did a great job explaining things. I've worked with disc brakes for years and still learned. Glad to hear which pads to consider ("S"). We are rolling up on 2,000 miles on our R+M with MT4's and it's time to check our pad wear. I usually look to replace pads when they get down to 1mm of pad. Is that still what would be recommended?
@Propelbikes
@Propelbikes 4 года назад
The recommendation is usually around 25% which is around 1 or 1.5mm usually. I think it also depends on how hard you ride. If you ride harder you might want to change before you have too little pad life left.
@ferryengr
@ferryengr 4 года назад
@@Propelbikes I see Magura lists the 7.P, 7.R and 7.C pads for our Magura MT4's. (The video mentions "S" pads?) It appears we would want "7.C" for quiet, comfort and durability riding around town - would that be correct?

Good crash course on disc brakes Chris. My R & M (equipped with Magura disk brakes), suffered from front brake chatter (screeching). Nothing Goofs up a great ride on your R & M until your squeaky brakes turns it into a HUFFY. Sam at Fullerton E-Bikes applied an aerosol "anti-squeal" which took care of the problem. Any thoughts you would like to add on noisy disk brakes?
@Propelbikes
@Propelbikes 4 года назад
First point is making sure your caliper is perfectly aligned. From there making sure the disc isn’t bent. Outside of that uneven pads or contaminated pads can make noise. We usually sand the pads down and clean the rotor with alcohol. This usually does it, but sometimes the anti-squeal can help if those measures don’t fix the issue.

Just to follow up on what I wrote below.... Due to this video and Jude's help, I purchased a Magura brake system for my bike. The Magura MT5e and MDR-C rotor installation went very well on the front of my 2018 Juiced Ripcurrent S fat eBike. Due to bad weather, I haven't ridden the bike yet but expect to next week sometime. I currently have my ebike in a Park Tool stand, and from what I can tell from hand-spinning the tire, the Magura is quite amazing. I am looking into accessories and pads and I'm trying to understand the 4 types of Magura brake pads that appear to come in 2 styles; individual and connected pads. Not sure how to choose between the two or what the compounds are, but I believe I want the 8.S pads for an ebike. They do not make this very easy to understand. Also, Magura sells some colored bling rings to spruce up the look of the caliper, but for $38. I will find an alternative (like yellow garden hose washers). Can't wait to ride the bike.

JUST A QUICK UPDATE; After a broken season of riding due to the pandemic and an old back injury, I have about 500 miles on the Magura MT5e front brake. It's everything I had hoped in a confidence-inspirig front brake. I only have 500+- miles, so my verdict isn't fully developed yet, but since there's no other 4 piston front brake systems out there for my bike, all I can say is it's truly superior to the dual pistin Star Union front brake the bike came with in every way. The Magura is NOT overkill. It's what a fat ebike should come with, but to keep the price down, you typically get Star Unions or the cheap Tektros. The Magura and the 2mm thick MDR-C 180mm Magura rotor are a complete win!

Hey Jude! You mention how with cars you really can’t adjust brakes “on the fly”. Well, in recent years a thing has emerged in the auto industry called “adaptive brake control (abc) which essentially calculates how a drives uses his brakes and adjusts them automatically for optimum efficiency. I’ve noticed bike brake technology moving more towards techy things like ABS. How long to you think it will be before we see adaptive brake control on bikes? Possibly a small centralized computer module for things such as this as well as analytics, where you can download the gathered analytics of a ride from a removable chip, impit it directly into a computer or your phone and recalibrate your bike. Then I set the chip back into the onboard computer module and essentially have a fully customized ride, from brakes, shocks, transmission, even tire pressure? Very interesting stuff!

I’m using the MT Trail for about 2 years now, and I have no complaints. I even convinced people to buy maguras, that were using shimanos or SRAM. By the way, I’m trying to use Bionol this week. That should deal with the boiling temperature.

Really great! Keep us posted how the Bionol works out. I’m not too familiar with it.

We have two Cannondale e-Bikes with Magura disc brakes. They wake the hole city, when its raining and we are brakeing. I am so old that I can remember ordinary cars got disc brakes, and they also had problems with squiking and vibrations. My quistion is - Why have you not contacted the automobil industrie to get their experiences.
