Deer Calling Tips: Tending Grunt Sequence 

The Extinguisher deer call has all of the deer sounds built in and you can just slide the exterior slide to access them all. No taking the call apart to change vocalizations.

I've found two long and two short just about always works in rut...I don't have to use a bunch of different grunts....a single long grunt and buck urine in pre rut....2 long grunts and two short with estrus and buck urine in rut...blow about every 20 mintues....I've had it work at 400 yds. I don't worry about the volume....just keep it normal. The kicker is this....get some code red or blue (red works just as good as blue and is much cheaper). Get buck urine and doe estrus. Mix them 50/50....use a draw string with a cotton ball on the end....drag it to the stand....then put 3 cotton balls around your stand 20 or 25 yds from the stand. In different places. The grunt gets their attention from a distance. Then they smell the urine.....in rut they can not resist...it seals the deal.....a big buck may take 2 hours to come out in the open but it happens.....always face with the wind....the bucks are coming with their nose into the wind...that direction! I see a monster every year. Be consistent even if it doesn't always work. I had 5 buck come to me this year because of the grunt/urine. Shot a nice 200 lb 10 point. Dec 22nd, in NC. ( don't buy into a three week rut and then done) Be careful after you blow the grunt.....movement will get you busted. Your own scent isn't as important but it's best to limit it if you can...it rarely gets me busted but will make them a little more careful coming in. They get totally fooled but the urine and grunt. Go into the woods without a flashlight. Many times I get busted going in but they don't go far if they smell the urine going in to your stand.....the grunt seals the deal.

People have heard, or even have videos, of different deer making different grunts, snorts and wheezes. Correlating the sound to the age/sex/season and behavior is not complicated. We assume that if deer usually make a certain sound while engaging in a behavior, then they also know that hearing that sound likely means that other deer are making that sound and engaging in that behavior.

i bought a grunt yesterday and it sais the tending grunt should last 3-5 seconds how long do you think that the "e-r-p" sound should last

As a hunter ive heard different people say that this particular grunt means this. this type means that. Ive always just used what was taught to me but does anybody actually know for a fact or with any evidence what the grunts actually mean to the deer? What do they just study the reactions of the deer to the grunts?
