Deer hunting in cold weather or after a major snowstorm can be challenging but it can also lead to success as long as you know where the deer will be. Once the harsh winter weather rolls in, the deer herd shifts into survival mode and although their bed to feed patterns are similar, where they will be bedding and feeding shift during the bitter cold. Most years this cold weather coincides with the significant increase in hunting pressure from the orange army which adds another layer of difficulty to finding success this time of year.
In this video we discuss several locations we try to identify in order to get closer to deer during really cold weather.

I have only had this land for 2 years and I noticed last year the deer were bedding in the thick lowland around my 1 acre food plot. This food plot is located more in the center area behind the house. This in turn allowed the deer to feed in the food plot at all times of the day which makes hard to hunt the food plot because the deer were close by and moving at all times of the day. I have added 3 more smaller food plots towards the property lines to help with access issues for entering and exiting. Unfortunately the deer have been using all of the food plots more after dark. hoping the late season cold will start to bring them in earlier in the day. I haven't over hunted any of the 9 stands I have out but it seems that the deer have not taken up residence in the center lower areas of the property. Thanks for posting all the information to help us out on getting the most from our time hunting. Hope you have a nice Holidays. Some how I deleted my comment. I just wanted to see if you could do a video on how agricultural crop rotation affects deer numbers and movement on smaller properties. I will be rethinking my food plots after this hunting season to see if there is a better way to keep the surrounding crops from having as big of an affect on the deer. I only have 40 acres and just under 2 acres of food plots, so there may not be much i can do. Thanks again.

Great information as usual. I have lots of cattails where I hunt, Will they use them when it’s cold out to bed in? Thanks for the great videos.

Thanks Steve! I hunt two properties with a lot of cattails, one they use to bed in and one they do not. The one they use to bed in is drier, not alot standing water. They find the higher ground within the cattails and bed in there. The other property where the cattails grow is completely underwater and the deer so not bed in there, they do bed around the edges though. For your question on whether or not they bed in the cattails due to the cold weather, I am not sure. I do know that deer like to bed in cattails in the late season because it's often times the best cover that's available. Everything else has fallen over or died back. So if you have cattails and have higher ground / islands within the marsh, you probably have deer bedded in there.
