We are a group of whitetail deer enthusiast that place particular emphasis on habitat management and hunting pressure in order to harvest mature deer.
We hunt on small Michigan parcels (70, 70, 36) surrounded by ‘brown down’ hunters and this can make accomplishing our harvest goals more difficult. However, through continuous habitat management and monitoring our levels of hunting pressure we are able to have multiple encounters with our target bucks.
My wife and I have been blessed with the opportunity to purchase a new home for our family on 36 acres, now owning private land, fulfilling our dreams as nature lovers and whitetail deer hunters. If you are fortunate enough to own your own ground and would like to learn the different tactics and strategies we use on our properties every year, please follow along as we share how we have evolved as whitetail hunters!
Q: due to heavy/persistent rains, I haven't been able to work my plots let alone plant anything thus far. Clover/chicory is going into half of each plot- late! What are you recommending for the seeding rate on rye, when mixing with the clover for that early Aug planting?
Over-seeding rye into a plot that is emerging is fine, but casting it on the top of bare soil risks loss due to birds, squirrels and drought. I can't drill; so, I need to get that rye covered with dirt to insure some growth. However, after a drag to cover the rye, I'll have to broadcast the clover, then cultipack.
Thin that forest to a much lower basal area level and get better forage and cover through out your entire property. You are just adding a drop in the bucket with those small openings compared to what you could do.
Apparently driving down the highway at 8pm in rural Georgia in October in a 2 ton shiny white vehicle with high intensity headlights works pretty well.
My superstition is second week of November that's just from my first time hunting last year. Im already planning on going up again. I thought oh maybe I might get a clear shot at a decent doe or a small buck, but what happened on the second week of the second day was a moment that ill never forget. A massive 8 point buck walked into my field of view i didn't even hear it, i saw it out of the corner of my walking my about 35 yards away but it wasn't broadside, it kept walking towards me in the tree stand i was put in then at 20 yards it turned for the perfect shot double lung hit with the crossbow.
Here in Southwest Missouri- I'm prepping some ground for a plot. Moving forward, I'm thinking I'll plant BWheat mid-June, then mow & rake it mid-August. At that point, my plan is to broadcast and aerate oats, ladino clover, and cereal rye into what I'm hoping becomes a real "honey-hole". I would appreciate your thoughts regarding my plan!!!
Terrific video! My small-acreage property slopes downhill and is 600+ feet wide where it ends at a creek bottom. Trail cameras show deer transiting along the creek. I'd been wondering if making an ATV-wide trail might encourage deer to so use it rather than picking their way through the undergrowth, and your video and comments hit the nail on the head. Thanks!
What a treasure chest of information! And anyone can tell this is right off the cuff. I have 45 acres in NE Arkansas already planned in my mind now. Thanks!!!
Instead of using a semi transparent blue filter you should have changed the actual levels of each color to intensify blues and yellows and desaturate the reds and oranges
My fear of hinge cutting is how many years will the tree live after it’s cut. I’d like to see a 5-10 year video showing the progress at that point. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
Also Gamehide sells a great product of clothing called Elimatick for that viewer asking about ticks. It works better than any spray. But combined you wont have any tick problems.
Awesome video ! I to live in med Michigan and was thinking about clearing out all my thick brush. But because of your videos I'm now going to just cut trails. For the deer to travel in the way that I can motivate them on my 80 acers . Thank you for the good advice.
12 acres in north Fl. Near lk city. Vines 🤬🤬. Palmetto’s. ,scrub palms 😤🤪🤦🏻♂️. Caraliona jasmin . Thick two ft high vines. Then toss in down tree from last fall hurricane. Work work work. Lots of chain sawing, hand held weed eater with cutting blade on it. The deer definitely use trails created. Use fence lines, small low areas, ditches. The edge of those thick palmetto bushes work great as edge And cover Use small .20 acres food plots dotted across the 12 acres , a couple tub styl water holes and the deer will come Could pick and chose deer to target.
Using ornamental orange trees for one side...serves as a fence also...not for everyone/everywhere... requires minimal effort to control and very effective... research and you'll see why.... great tool but in select situations (long SHARP thorns)
Working 30a 20yrs... screening makes small acreage feel larger to the deer.... I lken it to making cardboard play houses/nooks/crannies for small children and cats... just right on this video info...
