I also get wood chips/debris from my local tree guy. I am using them in a Hugel Kulture raised bed that is in the process of being built. I love your deer fence idea. much simpler than the last one I saw, but it wasn't electric either. I can't wait until your sauerkraut video to come.

Not trying to be negative but the local compost in my town was not so good. I took my pickup over and had them load it with compost from trees and stuff. I brought it home and scattered it in my lawn. Before I saw what had happened, I had glass all over my yard. When they pickup up the leaves and things from the neighborhoods, they do not screen it for garbage. I learned the hard way.

I get my seeds at a local farm store, as for the grasses and forage on the farm, I buy k32 fescue, medium ladino clover and purple top clover as well as some radishes and other goodies from several sources. Best local source is Green Resources in Colfax NC

If armadillos are digging in your mulch and destroying your precious vegetables...use lots of red pepper powder. If bunnies are nibbling your seedlings...sprinkle with red pepper powder. Saves you from big problems. Find a bulk deal on a 20 lb bag.

@StoneyRidgeFarmer do you use 100% dirt to fill your beds? I heard that putting a certain type of stone at the bottom will help with the mineral content of the soil. I'm not sure if it's true, though.

The cows would have liked that scrap cabbage and broccoli. And the little chicks will eat all those, too, if you run them thru a food processor. It's extra work but keeps them healthy and happy, and saves on feed. I got six foot metal stakes and rammed them in the ground and ran some chicken wire fencing, four foot high, all the way around. No more deer, rabbits, groundhogs..and it didn't take long at all! That white oak should last a really long time. You know those hundred year old barns you see around? They are either white oak or poplar. Of course having wet soil against it will cause some rot, but it will outlast any other wood you could have used.

I can't have a pretty garden like I used to. Damn squirrels will ruin it. I came home from work one afternoon and before I made it from my truck to inside my house, I tomato rolled off the roof and hit me. I tried everything known to man short of a BB gun to stop the little varmints. I gave up. They won. I lived on a farm for over six years. We planted a two acre garden each year worked by three of four of us. 100 tomato plants each year for by-products. We had every veggies you can think of including p-nuts. Fire ants love p-nuts.

@StoneyRidgeFarmer, Sooooo, what is he supposed to do? Share with us how he plants his garden, but not share the tools he uses to make someone's work load a bit easier. The raised garden beds are a “tool”. The soil in those beds are a “tool”. The earthworm he showed us is a “tool”. The cart and wheelbarrow is a great way for someone with the difficulty of pushing/moving a heavy load to continue doing what they love.

Let's not over look what you guys call "Schilling" is really part of the farm income diversity strategy. Josh has been open and transparent at every step about "Stoney Ridge Farm Inc" and it's "media department" If a company pays him to advertise, that's what all media companies do...why not partner with companies that offer products he can actually use? Small family farms MUST scrape and claw for market share OR find a niche in the market.... SRFarmer has created his own niche in an industrial farming market. Otherwise, SRFarm can not exist without capital throughput... multiple, value added and diverse business lines are the simplest and most successful way to grow any small business..... follow the opportunities you're given, or sell your cows at the meat barn for pennies on the dollar.
