DEF CON 23 - Cory Doctorow - Fighting Back in the War on General Purpose Computers 

When he mentioned the DMCA anti-circumvention clause, and said that you could use the flimsiest 'lock' you could come up with, he wasn't exaggerating. The first court case driven by the DMCA anti-circumvention clause was RealNetworks v. Streambox. Streambox made a program that let you time-shift livestreams. If a stream was going to be live at 2PM and you weren't going to be around, you gave it a URL and told it to start recording at 2 and end at 3 or similar, just like a VCR. The Streambox team had to reverse engineer the protocol and data formats that RealNetworks used to do this, but they managed it. Then in court they found out that literally ONE BIT that they didn't know the purpose of (they couldn't, nothing was documented) was supposed to be a copyright flag. Because they didn't know that, and didn't respect that single bit, they violated the anti-circumvention clause and it simply didn't matter that the time-shifting they were permitting was legal and covered by Fair Use. It was particularly sad because Streambox actually WON the case. And the appeal. And the next appeal. But they ran out of money and couldn't afford to keep fighting all the appeals, so eventually RealNetworks won the final appeal by default. Kinda surprised he didn't mention that case. It was very interesting and sad.

I just finished listening to Steve Gibson talking about IOT on Security Now episodes 562 & 563. The shoddy config vulnerabilities in these IOT devices combined with the DRM protection has messed up implications.

I got the first view because DEFCON > Christmas.

I'm watching it days after W3C published DRM specification as a HTML recommendation... Terrifying...

I'm still waiting for the day that anti-DRM and pro-DRM people sit in the same room to have an intelligent well-backed conversation. The two camps always seem to speak in isolation and make each other look like fools while that may not be fair.

the non-binary thing and his seemingly eagerness to talk to a female or non-binary seemed odd to me. IF you don't know what i'm taking about you didn't watch long enough. Over all, pretty good talk. Always interesting hearing about law and cyber tech.

you know if they do do "illegal to disclose vulnerabilities" you may see guys pop up that use a ransom tactic, like "giv muns or i'm use dat, n' mak u go poopoo" if you get what i'm saying...

Thumbs down the instant Cory said "non-binary' followed by "sausage fest". So, have sympathy and special consideration for weirdos with mental/emotional hangups, but denigrate ordinary males. As if ordinary males don't have valid questions or ideas to contribute simply because Cory wants to feel benevolent and some kind of hero to the non-oppressed. Screw him. If he's representing the EFF, if that kind of PC mindset which is typical in the rest of silicon valley and leading to the censorship of social media we're seeing... the EFF is worthless at best and a stalking horse at worst.
