Distinctly remember at the time when this came out, I sent the link to so many friends and I got similar responses: "Wow that was powerful but they were just a little too angry." It is not until years later that I realize that Asian women can be as angry as they want to be. Who are we to tell them how they can feel. Asian culture traditionally settles on a path of passiveness. I think that it is important to see strong women voicing their opinion and point of view, and if it happens to be angrier than we are used to, then so be it. Sometimes the world is too crazy to simply let others talk for you. Go head ladies! I will always be open to your points of view!
These ladies made sure to get it all out they chess even if people hated and didn't understand. I Salute for speaking up for the other people that I'm sure to feel the same as well.
We watched this 8th grade English and will never forget it. These women are speaking facts, and being half South Korean, I’m here for it! I love this video and always come back to it
Wow, lots of tone policing. SUCH a surprise. [/sarcasm] Asia is a continent made up of something like 45 countries, each with its own history, culture, and customs. There are many, many different languages. All Asians do not look alike. There are pale, blue-eyed, blond Asians. There are dark-skinned, dark-eyed, black-haired Asians. There are Asians with red hair and dun-colored eyes and skin the color of beach sand. Asians are multi-faceted people who possess a full range and depth of emotions and personality traits. Women are not limited to being weak and submissive and men are not weak, whinging losers and/or sneering villains. Asians are people, not two-dimensional caricatures. For everyone who has a problem with the fact the women were not nice and polite about calling assholes on their Yellow Fever bullshit, no oppressed minority has ever gotten anywhere with being nice and polite. Oppressors do not listen when you are nice and polite. You are ignored when you are nice and polite. All the white people who want to tell me I'm wrong, you've never been oppressed so shut up.
RogueFiccer007 Asians are not oppressed, and they're the majority of people on this planet. If the geographic term Asian meas any and all people from the Urals in the west, the Sinai in the Southwest to Provedenya in the Far Eastern Oblast next to Alaska. Def Poetry Jam is just further debasement of human society to the base elements of human nature. But what do I know I'm just some dumb indian.
Love it. this say a lot of how people feel when people like to make fun and poke at people's culture's. people act weird around culture's that are unfamiliar and likes it's a sience experiment needed to be dissected. Can't even say all the racial ignorant things have said to me because they can't figure out what I am. So I love this, this I what I feel like saying when I have ignorant people in my space.
Notice the claps are mainly during the foul language out burst. What does that tell you? Is the audience listening to the prose or the sensation? Something to think about. Does rage and anger always have to include malediction?
I think a big part of the point is that Asian women are stereotypically seen as docile and soft-spoken, so the cursing and the yelling are on purpose and as much a part of the art of this piece as the rest of it. And I think the audience was subconsciously reacting to that, because of the sheer novelty of it. It was effective. Love these girls! :)
There is also the fact that a lot of the cursing occurs after a lot the prose and is right before a breath and pause point which is where applause is actually intended to be.
@abigailbotto I don't think so. This poem can be applied to ANYONE from any ethnicity. The point of this poem is no matter what ethnicity you are, do not assume that of another.
James 3:6 The TONGUE also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. Proverbs 12:18 The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the TONGUE of the wise brings healing. Proverbs 18:21 The TONGUE has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
I love this poem. I want to use it in my ESL classroom but the transcript here on youtube is way off. Does anyone know how to get the words to this poem????
I don't understand why when a lot of non-black people take an opportunity to use a platform to express frustration and aggression, Why they choose black attitude/swag as an outlet? If you're proud and really want to get a genuine message out, then be YOU with out an alteration. And EVERYONE, not just passive people, will feel YOU!
it's called a blaccent not 'black attitude'. Saying the phrase 'black attitude' is not good since it implies that speaking like that is aggressive when it's just honestly how some people speak.
this is shit talking at its best..not art nor poetry.. cringe at the heavy vulgarity...distasteful too... not for me but people who like it.. go head with yo bad self🎤

Logitah Yes, and we're all free to like or dislike said style. I happen to very much dislike it. If you want someone to listen to you, chances are you'll have an easier time getting that to happen when you're not shouting and swearing. Of course, this seems like screaming into an echo chamber, so everyone already agrees.
Why would a Korean feel rage over Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Read a bit about the history of Japan and Korea, particularly during World War II. This is like an Irish American raging about how Italians are portrayed as all being in the Mafia. Makes no sense at all.
They were probably raised in the United States, and many people live in areas where talking street is normal. Also, talking street really has no impact on being Asian or "yellow", it's like an accent. Speaking street is something you learn through practice or from being around people who speak street for a long enough amount of time. ^_^ Sort of how people who come up north from the southern states slowly lose their accent. It's not always purposeful, just a byproduct of exposure.
Because they're from Philly! Duh. In urban areas, we talk this way. Not all of us, but most of us, because we're independent thinkers who learned it. So, see people as the same as humans, not by stereotypes. Because, sometimes, stereotypes are just made-believed like Disney's princess's love in first sight.
They were basically calling out the fetishize toon of Asian women. Like people calling them china doll, trying to tell them their ethnicity, expecting them to drop their panties for a non Asian guy who can say a few butchered words on their language etc.
