In Tudor times Cissbury Ring began to rediscover its strategic location in line with global politics as it formed part of an early-warning system of beacons that ran the length of the south coast.
Watchers were able to monitor 78 miles of coastline from here. The beacons would have consisted of barrels of pitch on top of tall oak posts meaning little physical evidence can be found on the site today.
During the Second World War Cissbury Ring saw considerable military activity which has left visible traces for you to find today. This new phase of chalk earth movement shows up clearly on black and white aerial photography reminding us how visible the Iron Age Hill fort would have been when first excavated some 2000 plus years earlier.
Why not visit the site yourself to scale the ramparts, hunt for long lost clues, embrace the views, leave nothing but footprints and enjoy this very special site.
