On 21 February, Quakers took part in an action organised by Defend our Juries at the Royal Courts of Justice. Following the Attorney General’s application to limit the rights of juries to act according to their conscience, activists entered the courts and held people’s assemblies in the main hall where they discussed the importance of juries and the need to uphold the truth.
Having been established in the Quaker 1670 Penn and Mead case ( • Penn and Mead Reenactment ) the right of juries to acquit according to conscience has been a key element of the defences used recently by climate and peace activists. Jenni and Phil tell us here of it’s importance.
The initial hearing of Trudi Warner, arrested for reminding juries of this, takes place at the Royal courts of Justice on Thursday 18th April. If you would like to join other Quakers supporting Trudi that day, please contact faithinaction@quaker.org.uk
From April 13-21 Defend Our Juries are holding a further week of action throughout England and Wales. Find out more and sign up here:
